I'm trying to make changes to my system to be able to capture sound. I've found the directions to make the tweak permanent (from here: http://forums.opensuse.org/english/g...ml#post2342948 and here: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...evices-877614/) but I need to know about one thing: What does latency_msec=5 mean? Do you need it for your average capturing of sound from your sound card?
View 2 RepliesI am looking to make an outdoor sound system. The house and everything is already wired. The garage is 20' from the house in an L with a patio in between. I want to run a network cable out there and set an old P4 computer with Ubuntu and use Amarok to be able to play music and playlists on a set of outside speakers So, an suggestions for small amplifiers to run off a computer? Once up, I may try and experiment with those little USB wireless remote terminals, but that is a ways off.

For non root users, I am not seeing any error messages when a app tries to use/access the sound card, just nothing plays. As I said, for root everything works as expected. I am sure this is a permission/setup issue, but I have no idea where to start.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am unable to capture sound from the sound card. I used to be able to do this with ease in SuSE 10.0 and 11.2. Now I have 11.4 and not only do I NOT have access to the sound card's channels (for base, treble, turning the mic on/off, and line in, Analog Capture Boost, etc) but now I can't seem to get at the settings for capturing sound coming from the sound card. I have tried using the Alsa mixer by way of the terminal and went to the Capture section and turned all of the settings all the way up. I didn't see any settings for Capture Boost as was available with 11.2's Alsa mixer GUI. Here's more of my info:

Isn't there ANY GUI sound mixer available that will give me access to all the channels I require? I not only record sound from my sound card, but I also use my mic at times for Skype and I like to be able to turn it off when not in use, rather than unplugging it all the time. I used to be able to do this with 11.2 and 10.0 and I really liked it that way. BTW, the plug for the mic is in the back of the computer and it's not convenient to have to plug/unplug it from there each time. For some apps, it's just a good thing to have all the sound settings done and in place before starting up the app. This I cannot do right now because of the changes to KMix and the Alsa GUI. I really really don't like this at all.
I recently converted an amd 64 bit WINdows machine to Lucid 64 bit. Everything has gone well. I had numerous issues with Pulseaudio that I removed it. Sound with Alsa has been great, including system theme sounds. I can record via a mike as well. What I cannot do is to capture sounds coming through the sound card. When I record I am getting empty files. The mixer indicates that there are two capture devices. Here is some data on my audio card.

I'm trying to capture my desktop sound (Video too, but that part's working) but nothing I try works. I've tried various programmes, none of them work. I tried various things I read on different websites, and nothing worked. I noticed /dev/dsp was missing, and put it back by a guide, but that made no difference and disappeared again now I rebooted anyway

I have been searching for an answer through most of the recent posts about sound issues but have not been able to find a solution. I am currently unable to capture sound from the "Line" input on my sound card. I do have sound and is working correctly for all applications and I do have P/A disabled (I'm not a huge fan of the sound quality with P/A enabled). I have checked and re-checked many settings but to no avail have not been able to capture sound. I'm sure I may be missing something or have not done something in order for this to work. I was using openSUSE 11.4 on a different pc and had no problems, unfortunately this is a different pc with a different sound card which is on-board so I am not entirely familiar with it yet.
It is a C-media CMI9880 which shows up as a Intel HDA (ICH6) and appears to be configured correctly.
I have a problem with trying to capture sound through the input jacks on my computer. The sound plays through from the inputs to the output, and it's volume is controlled by alsa mixer, but no programs can pick up the stream, including the PulseAudio and Gnome Volume controls.I have tried many of the suggestions to be found in these forums for sound issues, including removing Pulse, configuring the model in alsa-base.conf, and messing with every setting I can find.Here are the outputs from the commands from the troubleshooting guides:

When I talk to anybody on Skype, the sound is really slow, it sounds like I am a robot. Its running at maybe 1/2 normal speed. I am using Xine backend and internal microphone.

I recently installed the x64 rpm of OSS on my Opensuse 11.2 installation (alsa does not have drivers for my lynx card). Sound works beautifully in KDE (login sounds, apps produce sound, etc), EXCEPT for firefox. I can get no sound at all from firefox. I am baffled at why only firefox does not play audio.
System:
OpenSuse 11.2 (it is a pretty fresh install)
OpenSoundSystem 4.2
KDE 4.4 (updated from factory repos)
I'm running Kubuntu 9.10 X64, and am using ALSA for my sound. I have no trouble with sound: VLC, Adobe's Flash plugin, Java, etc. all work properly. When I run the Gnash standalone player, sound does not work at all.
When I run Gnash in a terminal, I get this:

Upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 using standard Update Manager procedure. Now I get a sound (thump) in my speakers for almost every button click. The sound theme in System / Preferences / Sound is "No sounds". I would like to completely disable any "activity" sounds from the OS, but nothing works.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI still have trouble with the sound system on my Fedora 12 installation on a Dell Laptop. Usually, sound is no issue at all, I can hear sound made in firefox and sound made with skype, but in some cases skype will not produce any sound after firefox made some sound.Again:
1. With firefox I hear some sound (video etc).
2. After that, skype does not work anymore.
i have shutdown firefox and skype, skype and firefox, restarted skype without firefox, but without succcess. skype did not make any sound.I even checked is there is something open with /dev/snd and /dev/dsp with lsof, and removed everything related. The I repeated step1: No success.The only way I was able to hear something from skype again was to restart the whole computer!Is there ANY way to handle this by software WITHOUT the need of restarting the computer each time I have these problems? Since I never had any related problems ever with Windows (for example), it has to be Fedora.And please, don't use worlds like alsa or pulseaudio or something. I just want to know what I have to change in my setup, with my installation etc to make skype work properly again WITHOUT restarting my computer every time.
I've just installed xubuntu on an old compaq presario desktop, and it won't make any sound at all. I've made sure that everything is unmute already. What else could be wrong?

In VLC, I could view TV signal with both video and sound but when i click on "record"it only records video without the sound at all. When I view this in pulseaudio volume control, under the recording tab, there seems to be no application taking over when I click on record button under VLC. Yet if I start up gnome-recorder, I could capture the sound when I view TV with VLC and clearly under pulseaudio volume control I see recording application is that of gnome-recorder. What's the deal here? How could I make sure under VLC it will record the sound?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm using Fedora 13 and think this behavior comes from Pulseaudio. To make it simple, all my sounds are played in my GNOME session. What's making sense because it's where Pulseaudio is launched. So, when I switch VT (CTRL+ALT+Fx), all sounds from my GNOME session is muted. What's not the actual problem. It's in fact a good behavior. The problem is I use some VirtualBox virtual machines on other VT launched with the xinit command.
These VMs emit sounds but I'm not able to hear them because I'm not on the VT of my GNOME session. But once I get back on my GNOME session I can hear all sound from the VMs. What I want, it's to be able to hear all sounds played by the VT on which I currently am and not everything and only in my GNOME session. How I can accomplish that?

No linux sound drivers on Asus' site. No ubuntu 9.10 drivers on VIA site. Low sound with default drivers. I've edited /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf with options snd-hda-intel model=3stack, but no luck. I actually had to do a sudo sh then edit it that way with vi because it was read only. Didn't do anything.
i've installed ubuntu studio on my old pc and it's barely working. (sorry for my language) when i put on player to play a song everything is ok but when i try to make an other program to play sound it doesnt... i saw about the jack server but i can't unterstand what am i suposed to do. the programs that succsessfully play sound are: media player, chrome, mozilla, some games.
