Motherboard: Asus P5KPL-CM
Audio Chipset: VIA VT1708B
No linux sound drivers on Asus' site. No ubuntu 9.10 drivers on VIA site. Low sound with default drivers. I've edited /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf with options snd-hda-intel model=3stack, but no luck. I actually had to do a sudo sh then edit it that way with vi because it was read only. Didn't do anything.
Several days ago, I replace my PC's motherboard and now sound is too low - I can't hear practically anything, I used alsamixer to configure output volume level to normal, but this won't survive reboot. I tried to use 'alsactl' and saveed rules, and edited rc.local to restore - but it didn't help. Can anyone tell me how to fix it?
I am getting a high pitched ringing sound coming from my speakers and headphones on 9.10.Does anyone have any ideas what is causing this problem and how to fix it? It is really annoying after awhile and is headache inducing.I've tried switching from PulseAudio and ALSA with no changes.
I'm having problem to get my sound work on my HTPC based on Asus AT5IONT-I Deluxe motherboard. I can get analogue sound out but not the digital sound on HDMI nor optical. I have tried a couple of things I've found on swedish forums, but nothing have worked so I'm ready to start over again from the beginning. I'm a real beginner when it comes to Ubuntu so step by step instructions is preferred. code...
I am looking to make an outdoor sound system. The house and everything is already wired. The garage is 20' from the house in an L with a patio in between. I want to run a network cable out there and set an old P4 computer with Ubuntu and use Amarok to be able to play music and playlists on a set of outside speakers So, an suggestions for small amplifiers to run off a computer? Once up, I may try and experiment with those little USB wireless remote terminals, but that is a ways off.
I have a laptop DELL Latitude D600. The sounds works great and I can control it with the laptop buttons (increase/decrease/mute volume).
I just upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04. In prior versions, I could control independently the volume for the speakers and for the headphones. And I was able to "join" them together so that when I increase the volume, it increases in both.
Now in 10.04 I can't find where to join them. But that's fine. The problem I have now is that the volume for the headphones seems to be a 10x multiplier of the "master" volume. For example, in order to hear "normal" on the headphones, the master volume has to be almost on mute. If I increase to 1/4 of the way out, the sound is too loud for a human being.
I went to alsamixer to see what's going on and started with everything at 0.
So I put my mouse on top of the volume control on the taskbar and with one "click" on the wheel (to increase volume) I get this code...
That's just one 'click' of the wheel... and the volume control shows almost nothing on the volume bar (the tooltip says Output: 5% -75.70 dB.
In the past the 5% gain in the output was proportional for the headphones. But now it's multiplied by a lot. This makes the volume control useless when using headphones. I have to go to alsamixer to adjust manually.
And to top it off, the new Ubuntu doesn't have the "old" volume control where you can see the level of each output element.
I can't make sound work in Pidgin. I've tries every single method (aplay %s with Command, ALSA, Automatic etc.). Anyway, I once was hearing sounds, but later they've gone again. I have ALSA set up in 'System - Prefs - Sound' and also in 'Multimedia Systems Selector', Debian Testing (sid) 2.6.32-3-686. I also cannot set the tray icon to 'Blink On New Message'. When I recieve a message - I only see a smilie there, no 'blinking'.
Had a well working sound system until I bought a USB webcam with microphone. Sound still works well except with flash. As mentioned here my problem is making flash use my normal sound card instead of the USB webcam microphone.
I am using a Dell Inspiron Laptop 1464. I have Ubuntu 11.04 Installed, and every time I have the volume at MAX and especially when I'm listening to music that has like high bit-rate (342) or what ever, there is a glitch in the sound, it sounds like when a CD skips or when it is scratched. I tried installing all types of different mp3 encoders and still the same.
Also it is the same when I use Banshee or Rhythumbox.
I used WUBI to install ubuntu 11.04 on my computer. I have an hp computer with AMD + ATI graphics. Once I am logged in to my account I get a high pitching buzzing noise. Can you help me get rid of it because it is extremely annoying.
I just built my first computer from the ground up and installed linux x86_64, FC10, and among other problems, i cannot get the volume of my speakers to play much above a low volume. i have the pulseaudio volume control set to 100% for the output and input levels. i adjust all my video and audio players volumes to the max also, but the volume from the speakers is still very low. the speakers worked fine with my old hp computer. is there anything i can do, adjust to fix this?
Is this just a standard characteristic of Linux or is there some way I can EQ all the audio? I've had nothing but problems with audio sounding like a scratched record in Linux. It would skip, crackle and break up no matter the source or volume. Found a solution that one to simply remove PulseAudio.
I'm using Altec Lansing ADA885 speakers with 8" DVC subwoofer. System response is good down to ~28Hz but it sounds like a cheap boombox. Last time I had these hooked up to a Windows (XP Pro) system, the bass was deep and full. Very audible all the way down. Now it sounds like the audio is boosted at center frequencies and overly cut on high and low end.I even tried putting in a PCI Turtle Beach Santa Cruz 5.1 card and the sound did NOT improve.
Basically I have a machine with 16GB of RAM and have just discovered that using all of it can crash the whole system over one process. How could I run a process on the system in such a way that if more than 90% of system memory is used, the process immediately crashes?
I've just noticed that unrar is suddenly taking minutes to extract instead of seconds.
I can remember if its recently been updated, but I've uninstalled and reinstalled it and the version is: unrar.x86_64 0:3.7.8-3.fc10
I've found a few Ubuntu posts about it on Google, but in true Ubuntu fashion nobody has any answers!
What's odd is that when I unrar a file from (Nautilus or "unrar x *.rar") it takes say 4mins, then if I do it again it takes 15secs, like as if its caching somewhere.
I am using Redhat linux 9.0 and using squid proxy server. My problem is tht i my squid server is responsing very slowing. whenevr i try to open sites the site starts to open after 3 or 4 seconds and often squid does not open the complete site. its stop the site in middle. I have CentOS 5.5 x86_64 with Apache, php and mysql. I have just installed OTRS (helpdesk - trouble ticket system) on that server and no users. This system works with perl, apache and mysql. I notice that is slow to respond and at times unresponsive the apache welcome page. code...
So I just reinstalled OpenSUSE 11.2 and I went from having 20-30 mbps speed to and from my 1 tb usb ntfs external hard drive to having about 1 mbps transfer speeds now. Is there any suggestions for how I can fix this? I know it can go faster, I just need to figure out how. and would setting acpi=off at boot affect this?
Opensuse 11.2 KDE 4.3 64 bit EXT4 main disk NTFS external
My problem is extremely slow write on hard disk and 100% cpu usage and it happens when I want to write something on the hard derive not any other external derive.
Tried a fresh ubuntu install. No change. I am not even sure if it is a software or hardware problem.
My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 510m with onboard Intel 855 sound (STAC 9750 AC97). The sound was perfect with WinXP, but with Ubuntu it's tinny and lacks richness and vibrates and distorts at higher volumes. I've played around with Alsamixer and changed the driver from ALSA to OSS4 and it has improved slightly, but still not perfect. Is it just not gonna get any better, should I not be expecting it to be as good as WinXP?
I've seen on the Intel site a Linux driver for my controller, it's a tarball but it won't compile after extracting it (read on this forum that someone had the exact same problem with that driver). Will the Intel driver not help, does the problem go deeper than just the driver? It would be perfect it you could just wrap the Dell/Intel driver and use that (just like with wireless ndiswrapper).
I was reading this article on how to fix the sound in Ubuntu 9.10 after upgrading from 9.04 [URL] and when I open GNOME ALSA Mixer, nothing shows up (I have included a picture). I typed in:
It always fails when I try the sound card test. It says like the system cant detect the sound card. Sound Card: 5 series / 3400 series chipset high definition audio Module: snd-hda-intel
After searching about the issue, I found the information that installing kmod-alsa-PAE-1.0.20-1.el5.elrepo.i686.rpm and kmod-alsa-1.0.20-1.el5.elrepo.i686 would solve the problem. But even I downloaded and installed them, nothing changed.

My usb sound card has been identified by alsamixer, however it won't make any sound when i put headphones in it. The volume is up, I know the sound card works.
When i try to play HD (even with 720p) video the CPU load is almost 100%. I'm using vlc player and the movie is barely watchable. If i switch to Movie Player, the CPU load is slightly decreased, but after 2-3 minutes the audio goes out of sync, so no solution there. I have an nvidia 8600gt graphics card and the proper driver installed, every compiz effect works flawlessly without the slightest increase in CPU load and a dual core 2,1 GHz AMD processor. It shouldn't be a hardware issue.
OSS, even though it's emulated *through* ALSA, consumes a microscopic fraction of straight ALSA's CPU usage. For example, when I'm playing something through ALSA with XMMS2, I'm getting about 25-30% CPU usage, but with OSS output, only 2%, tops. The same applies to any other application in which I can choose the output method. And, I'm on 10.04.
I am looking for a good mp3 player. I obviously dislike apple n windows so I wont buy an iPod or Zune player. Now I am wondering if any of you had good experience with any other mp3 player on Ubuntu. The two things I want are firstly a product of high quality n functionality like those two mentioned above AND secondly a seamless ubuntu compatibility. I'd love to see synchronization and stuff working out of the box. Anyone out there found a outstanding product and like to give a recommendation?
I am having hard time playing a high definition video file (.mp4), the video initially plays fine, but after 5 mins, it starts to skip and stutter, (I use Movie Player with some codes that Ubuntu installed when I first tried to play file) I have a Dell XPS M1330 Intel Core Duo @2.20 GHz with 4 GB RAM.
I'm using OpenSuse 11.4, and I was wondering if anyone else has noticed consistent high CPU utilization with banshee? By high CPU use I mean, when the application is running (whether it's idle, playing music, or scanning) CPU use on my machine is almost consistently at 100% (one core pegged).
Scanning my music library took hours ... like 3-4 hours to scan 9500 songs, and banshee was the only application running on my machine.
Rhythymbox doesn't suffer the same fate, scanning the same library took 5 minutes and CPU busy is less than 2% when it's running or playing music.
I'm running banshee 1.9.3, and I'd rather use it vs Rhythmbox.
since I installed ubuntu 9.10, my video files, specially .avi, are showing up on every player with a high contrast or too much brightness... So i have to go t vlc and adjust the image... =/ I'd like to know how can I make the video files running normally as I used to do at 8.10...
