i have used many Hex Editors in windows, almost all had comparison features, even notepad++ to an extent could do this. I have 2 binary files, i just want to compare the differences easily and graphically, in windows HexWorkshop did this with the click of a button. I have tried 5-6 editors from the ubuntu repos but none have this option
2) Is there any desktop video capturing software that are more catered for tutorials etc where the whole desktop is captured. (Camtasia for windows i know it a massive bit of kit, but thats the sort of software im on about)
I have tried recordMyDesktop, XVidCap and a few others. However, they capture XServer and therefore things like desktop effects arent recorded. I have used VLCs screen capture which to be honest is better than the other 2 software i mentioned for recording the whole screen, but options are very limited.

I am looking for a tool that will tell me, in less than half a second, if the microphone is picking up any sound above a certain threshold. (I plan to then mute the Master channel with another command line tool, like amixer.)

Are the programs written on schedulers ,thread library , process management, memory management, et al called systems programs ? How are they different from the programs that implement functions like open() , printf() , scanf() , read() .. they have a prefix sys_open, sys_close, sys_read etc , right ? Is there any difference of hierarchy between the programs that implement system calls and system level programs like that implement thread library, process management , memory managemnt etc..

hello everyone, im having a problem when my computer enters in the run level 4 as the default when i start slackware. The strange thing is that it not seems that is a X window problem, it looks like more like a configuration problem in some part of the kde script to initialize the log in, because if i manually start the X service it works fine, i dont know what is the source. Thank you in advance for the help.

When booting Debian, you'll see it printing a lot of information about the system variables and such.
I don't really need to see all that, so I'd like to modify some scripts to make sure that on boot, it just does what it has to do, without printing it on the screen. Just something I fancy.
Offcourse, still seeing errors would be nice. But that long slur of text, I could do without.
I've tried looking it up, but I can't find documentation on this specific thing anywhere.

I am trying to get the X screensaver gltext to monitor my system temp and maybe some other stats. Writing a script that puts together the stats periodically is no problem, but the main thing I'm running into is that gltext doesn't refresh - whatever text I feed it stays there. So, for example, I run this command:$ /usr/lib/xscreensaver/gltext -text "`cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THRM/temperature`"and get a gltext window showing:temperature:60 CI can manipulate it and format it as necessary, but as my CPU heats up and cools down, it doesn't update, even if I include time variables that do.I have a script that feeds gltext the time as the first line and the temp as the second line - and although the time updates continuously as the time changes, the temperature value remains the same as whenever the screensaver started.

I have a dual boot Acer Aspire One, after reinstalling Windows back to "original factory", the way it was straight out of the box, it now will not boot up at all. It goes to the Windows start screen goes blank, and loops there infinitely. Is there a USB tool I can use to figure out what went wrong and recover either my Windows or Linux partition with out having to do a complete reinstall?

I have it at lot that when a system crashes fatally and restarts (due to a power outage, kernel panic, tripping over a cord or something), there is no mention of it in the log. It just shows that the system was started. Is there a tool that will show this in the log? With a message like "system was not shut down properly or had a fatal crash / kernel panic" when restarting? It is pretty easy to do, just have a lock file somewhere that is removed when the system shuts down gracefully and that is left when it is not. And mechanism that checks this when starting up. It would also be possible to tell when the crash occured, as you can update the lock file from time to time and when the systems dies, it cannot anymore.

When ever I am starting my system at run level 5, it stops booting the machine at a particular point. After starting all the services & before taking user account and password, the fan speed of the cpu increases at faster rate and then after sometime the system automatically stops down.
I have also checked with other run levels, it works fine. I have also gone thru run level 3 and then used the command "startx" but still its not working and the system stopped automatically by making the fan speed up to a high. Primary memory 2 GB.

I'm trying to make changes to my system to be able to capture sound. I've found the directions to make the tweak permanent (from here: http://forums.opensuse.org/english/g...ml#post2342948 and here: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...evices-877614/) but I need to know about one thing: What does latency_msec=5 mean? Do you need it for your average capturing of sound from your sound card?
