OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Cannot Capture Sound From Line In Input In 11.4 (no Pulseadio)?

May 18, 2011

I have been searching for an answer through most of the recent posts about sound issues but have not been able to find a solution. I am currently unable to capture sound from the "Line" input on my sound card. I do have sound and is working correctly for all applications and I do have P/A disabled (I'm not a huge fan of the sound quality with P/A enabled). I have checked and re-checked many settings but to no avail have not been able to capture sound. I'm sure I may be missing something or have not done something in order for this to work. I was using openSUSE 11.4 on a different pc and had no problems, unfortunately this is a different pc with a different sound card which is on-board so I am not entirely familiar with it yet.

It is a C-media CMI9880 which shows up as a Intel HDA (ICH6) and appears to be configured correctly.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: No Line-in/mic Capture By Software, But Sound Plays Directly Through?

Mar 12, 2010

I have a problem with trying to capture sound through the input jacks on my computer. The sound plays through from the inputs to the output, and it's volume is controlled by alsa mixer, but no programs can pick up the stream, including the PulseAudio and Gnome Volume controls.I have tried many of the suggestions to be found in these forums for sound issues, including removing Pulse, configuring the model in alsa-base.conf, and messing with every setting I can find. Here are the outputs from the commands from the troubleshooting guides:

Code:

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Unable To Capture Sound

May 13, 2011

I am unable to capture sound from the sound card. I used to be able to do this with ease in SuSE 10.0 and 11.2. Now I have 11.4 and not only do I NOT have access to the sound card's channels (for base, treble, turning the mic on/off, and line in, Analog Capture Boost, etc) but now I can't seem to get at the settings for capturing sound coming from the sound card. I have tried using the Alsa mixer by way of the terminal and went to the Capture section and turned all of the settings all the way up. I didn't see any settings for Capture Boost as was available with 11.2's Alsa mixer GUI. Here's more of my info:

[Code]...

Isn't there ANY GUI sound mixer available that will give me access to all the channels I require? I not only record sound from my sound card, but I also use my mic at times for Skype and I like to be able to turn it off when not in use, rather than unplugging it all the time. I used to be able to do this with 11.2 and 10.0 and I really liked it that way. BTW, the plug for the mic is in the back of the computer and it's not convenient to have to plug/unplug it from there each time. For some apps, it's just a good thing to have all the sound settings done and in place before starting up the app. This I cannot do right now because of the changes to KMix and the Alsa GUI. I really really don't like this at all.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: No Input Sound With Mic / Get That?

Jan 14, 2011

I have the following problem. As trying to record with an analog microphone through arecord, audacity, gnome-sound-recorder i can get no sound captured. Then i've tried skype where the volume is too low and the sound is distorted.

Until i was using an usb webcam with mic integrated i had no problem using skype but with a simple usb mic i can't get sound recorded. I've tested 3 different mic in a windows os and in opensuse 11.3 on the same pc with a double partition. All of them are working fine with win but not with opensuse.

Bellow i' m providing some info as requested in a similar post from oldcpu

11.3 x86-64 & vt1828s - No sound from mic or line in code...

i've tried to upload to the alsa site but it gave me only a .txt output therefore, i've put it on pastebin.

Sound output works without problems. The only problem is the mic input.
When the volume of the mic is at 100% i can here sound from the speakers, what should mean that the mic is working, but it's not capturing anything. I've checked the mixers from yast>harware>sound and seem to be all up as in alsamixer in terminal and kmix.

I'd like to add that i'm using opensuse 11.3 with kde 4.5.5 updated today through the stable repositories and to have even updated alsa, as proposed always from oldcpu in the same post mentioned in the beginning of this post, from the following site and for my specific kernel.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Capture The Video Using The Command Line?

Jan 23, 2011

I wanted to share this nifty technique I came across for capturing video using the command line. The problem: I have a bunch of old VHS tapes (remember those...?) and need to get them digitized. I have a VCR, and a Dazzle Hollywood DV Bridge which captures video to DV over Firewire (IEEE1394). I first tried using Final Cut Pro, but it wouldn't capture, perhaps because it expects a controllable DV camera, and the Dazzle isn't a DVC device. I then tried my other favorite video editing app, Kdenlive, but it seemed to have the same problem.

I took a quick stab at the other common editors in the repositories (Kino, Openshot, etc.), but no luck with any of them. Then I remembered the dvgrab command, and gave that a shot and it worked, giving me a nice .dv file. However, DV makes pretty big files, which I wanted to compress down to something more manageable. Since I was going to be digitizing hours and hours of tapes, it would be great if I could compress while capturing. A little more googling and I had the answer - you can pipe dvgrab directly into ffmpeg! Here's the command:

Code:

dvgrab -format dv1 - | ffmpeg -f dv -i - -b 2000k -ab 512k -y output.mov

the first part starts the capture, in DV1 format, and outputs it to a pipe file. usually you give dvgrab a filename, like

Code:

dvgrab -format dv1 capture.dv

the second part does the encoding:

-f dv: use DV format
-i -: input from the pipe
-b 2000k: video encoding bitrate of 2000k/sec, high quality
-ab 512k: audio encoding bitrate
-y: overwrite file if it exists

I didn't set the codec explicitly, for Quicktime it defaults to MPEG4. This worked great, capturing a 2-hour tape into a high-quality quicktime around 2GB. But I also wanted to be able to view the capture while it was going. Since I left the field monitors and audio splitters at the office, I had to figure out how to do this in software. Turns out that the "tee" command does exactly what I needed - the shell never ceases to amaze! Here's the full command:

Code:

dvgrab -format dv1 - | tee >(ffmpeg -f dv -i - -b 2000k -ab 512k output.mov) >(playdv --disable-audio --no-mmap)

tee uses the

Code:

>(command)

syntax to pipe simultaneously to multiple processes. The only thing that didn't work was audio playback, which was choppy and introduced errors in the capture file. I think a little tweaking with the capture rates could fix that.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: How To Capture Sound With ALSA

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Switch From Audio Input From Mic To Line On 9.10?

Feb 28, 2010

I wanted to take an audio feed from a stereo amplifier into my HP Pavilion DV6 laptop, in order to digitally record some old vinyl.

In the Sound Preferences tab, I seemed to be able to record easily from the internal mic, but there seemed to be no easy way to switch the preferences to enable recording from the Line In socket on the laptop.

We tried muting the mic, this only caused the system to record nothing. We also tried all the various available options in "the Hardware Profiles" tab, "Settings for the available device", but no the laptop seemed to be getting no "line in" input with whatever profile we tried.

On Mac, it was as simple as switching the input sound preferences from "internal mic" to "line in".

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound Output Redirects To Input

Jun 9, 2011

I checked my sound preferences and noted that the input was recording what they say (they could hear an echo). Also if I played back anything it would redirect to them. This has never happened to me and I've made a lot of calls in the past.

I tested with Audacity and it records fine, but when I play back the recording, it redirects to the input channel so it's not a problem with Skype. (my soundcard is a VIA VT1708B 8-Ch). Somewhere I read that the output of aplay -l is useful.
