Jul 20, 2011I have two devices (a usb modem and a camera) permanently hard-wired into my system. When linux boots, it automatically inserts their drivers. However, I would like this to be under my control to insert as and when needed. Can anyone give any pointers as to how I might disable auto-insertion, whilst still allowing manual insertion via insmod or modprobe? I understand the usual method would be to use modules.conf, however in my modules.conf file, there is no entries at all.

This is the problem I run lspci -v which checks all drivers on my system and more. It says kernel driver in use is nouveau. Then under that it says kernel modules: nvidia recent, nvidia-96, nouveau, nvidiafb. So what it looks like I have 3-4 drivers for my video card loaded and one, nouveau, being used. I think they conflict with each other.
I'm trying to add drivers other then nouveau, because the mouse freezes with it. At this point I can't seem to get rid of nouveau, I go to terminal and type:
sudo apt-get --purge remove xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
And it says that it's not loaded so I can't dump it. lspci-v says nouveau is the driver being used and trying to dump it. It says it isn't installed. I'm confused. I want to dump nouveau, what should I do? I also go into Synaptic package manager and it isn't listed as being installed.

Jun 15, 2011I have, for days, been trying to get a Fedora 15 server to send audio output to the system monitor, an ASUS VH242H, via HDMI. The video portion works perfectly, allowing me to appreciate GNOME 3 for the first time. Sound, on the other hand, is non-existent.
From many, many threads on this problem, I have at least been able to provide some info which might help resolve this. Unfortunately, I have now read too much and followed too many suggestions to be able to find my way through the morass. So, once again, I built a completely new system to ensure a clean start.
Note also that to simplify things, I disabled the on-board audio in BIOS so only Nvidia has any sound output capability. Initially, 'alsamixer -V all' identifies the card and the chip as being PulseAudio. That would change if I used the <F6> option but I have not done so to keep things 'clean' at this point. The 'Master' is full on (100<>100), so muting is not a problem. Next, I searched for the device from the output of /proc/asound/card0 which would match the monitor.
The one device associated with the monitor_name is eld#3.0:

Both the kernel driver and the kernel modules are not what I think I should have. The kernel driver should be HDA NVidia for starters, no? Running modprobe -l and looking for nvidia returns:
'kernel/drivers /video/nvidia/nvidiafb.ko'and 'extra/nvidia/nvidia.ko' But I have not attempted anything beyond this point because I am just too confused as to what needs to be done and who or what manages these values effectively.
Slackware :: Cli Php Missing Modules As Regular User But Not As Root?
Sep 9, 2010My cli php is missing modules as regular user but not as root. In particular, mysql is missing... which is how I came across this issue. I'm running Slack 12.2 w/ php 5.2.14, standard Slack packages. As a normal unprivileged user:

Fedora Installation :: Erratic Install Results W/initrd - Custom Spins With Custom Drivers - Modules?
Dec 28, 2009Just spent three whole days barking up the wrong tree, solving Fedora 11 and Fedora 12 boot failures because the correct hypothesis was illogical: installation did not update/modify the initrd.
The first couple of times I installed Fedora 11 on the HighPoint Technologies RocketRaid 2640x4, the installation inserted my "custom" driver module (rr26xx) into the initrd, permanently, so that the system booted off the controller card for which the custom driver was inserted. (I yelled about this success in this thread: [url]
My most recent installs of BOTH F11 and F12 on the RocketRaid failed to properly set up the boot. It turns out that the "rr2640" module I "slipstreamed" into the installation process was *NOT* permanently added to the initrd by anaconda. (F12 gave me "no root device found boot has failed, sleeping forever", on boot; F11 hung also, without such error, I presume, during the init script execution). Because of limited resources and time, I only know for sure the module was missing from the F11 initrd, and am ASSUMING the same was the case with F12.
The only difference between the successful installs and the ones with failed boot is that the successful installs were made on a single-drive (JBOD) mode on the controller; whereas, the failed ones were placed on RAID 5. But, AFAIK, the created logical device for the card is "/dev/sda", in both cases, and the kernel can not distinguish between the two cases (or can it?). Thus, the inconsistency cost me a lot of time, and is still inexplicable to me.
Question: What is the best way to deal with custom drivers, today? There are custom spins, and many tools, like isomaster. Stupid question: Is there a way to modify the initrd inside an installer ISO -- be it for CD/DVD/USBboot drive -- beefing the init RAM disk with whatever modules you'd like, for the boot process (using, say, isomaster)?
And what makes anaconda understand that a module must be added to the initrd ? How can one force anaconda to do so?
How does moving to dracut as the initrd tool affect any/all of the above?

May 7, 2011Currently I am trying to update my drivers in 11.04 on a dell inspiron mini.
I do not believe it is a pure dell problem, as my regular dell xps running 10.10 has been having to problems updating.
I go into additional drivers and start having it search but it gets stuck and states:
Downloading package indexes failed, please check your network status. Most drivers will not be available.
Does this mean the servers are just really busy? Or do I have a problem somewhere on my end?

Sep 17, 2010I want to enable the desktop effects (such as smooth minimising, smooth viewport switching, etc) but it says that "Desktop effects are not supported on your current hardware / configuration. Would you like to activate them anyway?"
My first question is how do I check to make sure whether the NVIDIA drivers are enabled or not? (I know they're on the system, since 'NVIDIA X Server Settings' is in the list of applications).
My second question is how do I activate these drivers?
Note that I don't have root access, since I'm using a university machine, so I can't edit the xorg.conf or anything like that.

May 8, 2010Well, wouldn't you just know it? I encountered problems when upgrading from 9.10 to 10.04 with update-manager. What a surprise. Anyway, here are the problems:1. Cannot enable desktop effects. Error appears after searching for drivers.
2. 2-3 minute boot times. Used to be 40 seconds. It spends 2 *minutes* in the BIOS before actually starting Ubuntu.
3. The volume controls on my laptop's keyboard now control PCM rather than Master, so everything is horrifically loud past three clicks, and two quiet under that.
4. The bootsplash displays at 1280x800, my monitor's resolution, and looks pretty. The log in screen, however, switches to what looks like 1024x768. When I log in it changes back to 1280x800.
5. Cannot boot into Windows from grub. When I select Windows, a blinking cursor appears in the top left corner and stays there. Nothing happens

Feb 3, 2010I have ubuntu 9.10 I have the ATI Technologies Inc Mobility Radeon HD 3600 Series [1002:9598]video card. I dont know what it is but i want to enable extra visual effects. unfortunally a message stating "searching for drivers" appears, eventuall folowed by " Visual Effects can not be enabled" i think this is due to the drivers obviosly.
what are the drivers I need for linux (if any) for my specific video card? what do I need to do? also which video card are best fit for ubuntu/ linux? note: I dont know what it is, but originally when I first installed ubuntu I did something and the visual effects had worked had worked and up until recently i may or may not have of messed with any thing could i have of touched something
General :: Rc.modules Not Loading Modules At Startup?
May 11, 2010I've been trying to load my pcmcia network card driver "xirc2ps_cs" at startup with no success. I have added "modprobe xirc2ps_cs" to the rc.modules file but it doesn't load at startup. Curiously, though, if I execute rc.modules AFTER the machine has booted it will load the modules just fine. Just not during the boot up process. Thinking that hotstart might have been causing problems I've disabled hotstart (chmod -x) temporarilly to remove it from the picture, but there was no change.

I may try the AMD Catalyst proprietary drivers but from history those usually lag behind the Fedora versions. I also read some people had issues with the current AMD Catalyst drivers in the Catalyst guide thread.
Also, the AMD 6950 graphics card fan is at full speed all the time in Fedora 15. I do believe you can with the Catalyst drivers using aticonfig but was wondering about the default Fedora 15 drivers?

Apr 14, 2011Tonight I installed ubuntu 10.10 (32 bit) on an external usb harddrive with a dvd I burned and I used my older desktop. I disconnected all internal and external drives first so everything had to be put on the usb drive I selected (only option available). I used the option to load extra software, use the entire hard drive, and let the software do it's thing. I basically had no options where to put things and it didn't have much choice.
When I boot the usb drive on my laptop (win 7 64 bit) by telling the bios to boot to it first... I get an error: modprobe: FATAL Could not load /lib/modules 2.6.35-22 generic modules No such file or directory. This message appears twice and then it does boot into ubuntu and seems to work fine. I'm new to this OS so that is an uneducated guess but the things I have done seem to be working. So exactly what is this error referring too? Is there a way to fix the problem or do I just ignore it.
