Ubuntu :: Cannot Enable Desktop Effects. Error Appears After Searching For Drivers
May 8, 2010
Well, wouldn't you just know it? I encountered problems when upgrading from 9.10 to 10.04 with update-manager. What a surprise. Anyway, here are the problems:1. Cannot enable desktop effects. Error appears after searching for drivers.
2. 2-3 minute boot times. Used to be 40 seconds. It spends 2 *minutes* in the BIOS before actually starting Ubuntu.
3. The volume controls on my laptop's keyboard now control PCM rather than Master, so everything is horrifically loud past three clicks, and two quiet under that.
4. The bootsplash displays at 1280x800, my monitor's resolution, and looks pretty. The log in screen, however, switches to what looks like 1024x768. When I log in it changes back to 1280x800.
5. Cannot boot into Windows from grub. When I select Windows, a blinking cursor appears in the top left corner and stays there. Nothing happens

I installed a PCI graphics card "ATI RV280 5960" but it still says desktop effects cannot be enabled. What do i need to install/do to get that to work?
Using openSUSE 11.1
The card itself (on a sticker) says it's a Radeon 9250.

I am getting following error while trying to enable 'compiz' in 10.4.
"Desktop effects could not be enabled"
Output of [URL]
Gathering information about your system...
Distribution: Ubuntu 10.04
Desktop environment: GNOME
Graphics chip: Intel Corporation 82G33/G31 Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)
[Code]....
So, it looks like my hardware support all what it needs for Compiz. What else is going wrong here?

i m trying to fix the nvidia drivers and stuff to let Desktop Effects work. I reboot after some changes, and at first I got a kernal error message, and the Fedora froze. So I restart,, and it freezes before I even get the error message. Pop in the live cd, booted up from it so I can talk to my fedora friend, and the reboot to try again. Works, still hasn't froze, and I could get the actual error info.

I click 'Enable' on the dekstop effects. Usually, nothing will pop up at all. Sometimes, the 'Keep Settings' thing will turn on, upon seeing I click it to keep the new settings. I turn the appearance page back on, and it says there are no effects enabled. I want to enable normal effects.
I had an old version of Ubuntu for almost half a year before updating to Lucid Lynx. I recently wiped the new version of ubuntu accidentally (lucid lynx) while playing around with it, but before I wiped it I had graphics driver and effects enabled no problem. Emerald and transparency worked, etc. I did the exact same steps this time that I did on my last install of Ubuntu- and now it won't work.
I have compiz installed but it won't enable effects either. My graphics card is a Nvidia GE Force MX, i think.

When I try to enable desktop effects it follows the usual procedures but at the very end it says: Desktop effects could not be enabled. My driver is working when I run that hardware test. this is my output from "compiz" at a terminal.

I have a Nvidia Geforce 8400GS card installed. I just reinstalled Ubuntu 9.10 on my computer, everything works but I can't enable desktop effects. I tried using the generic drivers in synaptic nothing. Tired the restricted drivers, (both of them) the system runs smoother, but still can't enable desktop effects.
I tried upgrading to 10. And after the upgrade and restart I just got a black screen. I couldn't even access the terminal So I went back to 9.10. I ran the compiz-checker script. And it spit back:
"More than one graphics chip detected -- sorry, the script can not handle that. Aborting."
Which lead me to believe the onboard card was still enabled. Unfortunately I can't disable it in bios as my bios doesn't have that option.

For some reason I cannot enable desktop effects. When I try to enable from the Appearance settings it actually turns on and I can see the effects, but then it pops up a message saying "Desktop effects could not be enabled" and then it turns them back off. I saw a thread suggesting I run compiz from the command line and check the output. But when I do that it works fine and gives no errors. I also tried downloading compiz-check and here's the output of that:
Code:

Distribution: Ubuntu 10.10

Graphics chip: ATI Technologies Inc Mobility Radeon HD 3650

I had Compiz Fusion working and wobbly windows and the likes, but after installing some updates and VirtualBox, Cairo Dock and AWN to see which one I liked, Amarok and Qlix for Zune, I restarted. Now when I open Cairo Dock there is a black border around it like transparency is disabled, no desktop effects, and I am unable to activate them because I get a no drivers found message. I don't see why this is happening considering it was working from the get-go
I have an ATI Radeon x1300, which is on the legacy list so I don't think there are drivers for it anymore that work with newer versions of Ubuntu, but I don't understand why it worked before.
My system specs:
Dell Dimension C521
2.5 GB RAM
AMD Athlon 64 3200+
ATI Radeon x1300
Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 32 Bit (Is it worth upgrading to 64 bit?)

I am trying to do some video tutorials at [uRL] on Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.10 this is the first edition to require desktop effects. When I install it in the VM it isn't enabled right away. when I go to enable it I ran in to the problem that I couldn't find appearance. When I opened appearance from the terminal I couldn't enable Visual effects because mutter is running. How do I drop to the base terminal and enable visual effects?

I don't remember what I was doing exactly, I think I was changing the wallpaper and at the same time doing something else when all of a sudden the monitor flickered and I no longer had the advanced desktop effects with compiz. They had been working perfectly before and now all of a sudden I cannot use them. When I click on 'Extra' in the 'Visual Efects' I get the message 'Could not enable desktop effects'.I've tried 'compiz --replace' in the terminal and the windoww borders go away.

I have installed Fedora 12 on my laptop (Lenovo X61s) and now I have some problems with my OS. Please help me to config my machine.Currently I can not enable Desktop Effects any more. I receive this message: "Accelerated 3D graphics is not available. Desktop effects require hardware 3D support."
I'm sure that I could enable the functions of compiz when I used fedora 11 and Fedora 12-beta on my laptop before.Besides, when I represent my slides, I can not see my screen on my laptop any more. It's dark. When I used Fedora 12-beta, I can see my screen and another screen for my representation. Is my Fedora lack of some necessary packages? Is it necessary to reinstall the VGA driver? How can I do?

I have Lucid lynx on my laptop, its been working perfectly for months. Recently been trying to get flash videos on sites to play and came across a 'fix' that said to disable desktop effects, which I did.
That didn't work and afterward found out that adobe flash 10 don't work on 64-bit linux, which is what I have. Tried to re-enable desktop effects to normal but got "cannot load desktop effects" popup.
I've removed nvidia driver, reinstall it, tried to enable desktop effects, didn't work. Ran nvidia-settings which said to run as root nvidia-xconfig and restart X(alt-printscr-k), which I did, it didn't work. I just want my desktop effects back, I had it on extra.
Edit: Forgot to mention that at boot, after grub menu nothing shows. No login screen. I have to add "nomodeset" by pressing e at boot menu and typing it to the boot options to get a dialog to choose restart x which then shows the login screen.
Update: I've been searching all over, tried to install by downloading from nvidia site, didn't work, been rebooting like crazy after every try. Installed a bunch of nvidia files from software center and got hardware drivers to have nvidia current. The driver is activated and in use. However I still can't enable desktop effects and ubuntu doesn't boot normally. After the grub menu it shows the logo for a second then blank screen. I have to boot with nomodeset and choose to restart x or start in low graphics mode.
Please help me fix this.

I've got an ati x1270 in my laptop and removed the fglxr driver and now I can't enable desktop effects and the preinstalled driver clearly isn't working and I don't really want to reinstall ubuntu AGAIN. I'm getting tired of it. I wouldn't have removed the driver except that I think it was effecting my booting because I was booting to a blank screen (and it wasn't my ram)

So I recently fresh installed Ubuntu 10.10, and after a few hiccups I got everything running fine, including the desktop effects with Compiz. So anyways, after a couple days of everything working fine, I ran an update, and rebooted. When Ubuntu booted back up and I logged in, all the effects were off. I opened up Compiz and all the boxes were unchecked. So I went to the appearance settings, tried to enable the "Extra" visual effects, and then the "Searching for drivers" box popped up. It ran for a little bit and then closed and said "desktop effects could not be enabled". So I checked the restricted drivers thing and the ATI proprietary driver is enabled and in use.
But whenever I try to enable the effects the screen just flickers, the window borders flicker for a second, and then the window pops up saying the desktop effects couldn't be enabled. The searching for drivers window only pops up like half the time.My video card is an ATI Radeon HD 3870, and I've tried reinstalling the drivers for it.Also, whenever I run compiz my window borders disappear entirely and don't pop up again until I try to enable desktop effects in the appearance settings. I've lurked the forums a bit, and I haven't been able to find anything that has fixed my problem.

I am running F11 and want to spanky up my Gnome desktop a little by adding the desktop effects. When I try to enable it, my screen flickers then returns simply "unable to enable effects".I don't know where to go from here, I tried to google this but the 15 billions hits made me weep. One link seemed to provide some hope but after following the instructions, things went totally wrong and screwed up my X server; this could be because at first I didn't realise but a default install of F11 puts the PAE kernel on.
