Software :: Very Low RAM Using KDE In Arch System / Make It Up?
Oct 3, 2010
Earlier today I was reading a webpage while installing an application when suddenly my harddrive starting reading/writing like crazy and my screen practically locked up. I went to tty1 and did "top" to see if there was a single application causing some horrible infinite loop or eating too much memory. Nothing stuck out, so I rebooted my machine. While it was rebooting (since it was still being slow), I looked at the "Mem:" line from "top" and saw that even the 4 GB of swap was exceeded by an entire GB. As of writing this, I only have 20MB of available cache, and it occasionally dips as low as 8MB.
I've done some searching online, and I'm seeing people complaining about X using 250MB of the available memory, and mine is far worse (mine is using a little over 1GB of memory). Some were saying that it is caused by KDE effects (mine are disabled). code...

I just did the pacman -Syu command today since i have had limited access to internet i could use with arch lately, (been tethering via droid which is only compatible in ubuntu) The command line works fine, i even reinstalled X to see if that was the problem, whenever i do startx it loads up for a second but before my xfce screen even pops up the screen blinks and blackens.

Yesterday I tried running pacman -Syu to update my system, but the cups package keeps conflicting and stops the whole process. This is what happens when I try to just upgrade cups:
Code:

Firstly im a linux newbie so try and bear with me, and make any advice clear anywho Ive been running ubuntu for a while on a single partition. Ive recently been looking into other distros and came across arch linux. As i installed arch it was recommended that you create partitions for various directories, such as boot, tmp etc.
Ive read the advantages of this and would now like to set ubuntu up in a similar fashion, alongside arch. Whats the 'best' way to do this. Can ubuntu use the partitions set up by arch? Will i have to reinstall ubuntu? eh i dont know if my question makes sense since its late here and its a topic i know little about. To put it simply: how do you create a multi-partitioned system running both ubuntu and arch

I'm trying to put music on a 2GB blue 3rd gen iPod Shuffle (the long metal bodied version) using gtkpod on current Arch Linux. While the files get stored on the ipod, when I try to listen to music the ipod just says "please use iTunes to sync music". The model in question is listed as supported by gtkpod, so What's going wrong?

Can I make a LiveUSB with persistance that can boot on a Mac or a PC? I have heard about GRUB2 but I have been having trouble installing it. rEFIt can be installed on the Mac and used to boot the USB but I want a method that allows me to bring my flash drive anywhere and boot the OS. I want there to be no required software on the other computer. Is this possible? If so can anybody post a guide on how to do it?

On a new Dell Lattitude e6400, I have installed both arch and Ubuntu. Ubuntu recognized wifi and ethernet right away and connected and is working fine, but in arch, I am having more problems then I usually do when using arch. From the output of lspci the ethernet is a intel device 1502, I have researched this and found it to need the e1000e module as its driver. I modprobed this module sucessfully, but no ethernet. With wlan, i have found that the card is a DW1501 Wireless-N WLAN Half-Mini Card that has a broadcom 4727 chip in it. I downloaded the windows driver for this chip and isntalled it with ndiswrapper but this did not help. What I think is the root of the problem is the error message that restarting networking creates.
Quote:
Dell only supplies drivers for ubuntu, but it should still be possible to get this to work. I have tried booting various live distros that I had drives for and I found that the parted magic boot disk saw the ethernet port and was able to connect to ethernet, and that the ubuntu live disk was able to connect to both wifi and ethernet. Somehow they must be seeing the prescense of the hardware in a way that I have not tried with arch. Please help, I really need to get this computer workign with arch.

I'm having problems loading compiz-fusion or the settings with my nvidia driver, or driver itself. Basically, I installed Arch (in vmware) then ran: pacman -Syu, pacman -S libgl xorg mesa xf86-video-vesa hal xf86-input-evdev xf86-input-mouse xf86-input-keyboard compiz-fusion alsa alsa-util nvidia I've also added a user. I'm following the wiki guide but I'm not sure where to go from here. here's the error messages:
[URL]
basically it says that my nvidia driver is incorrect or isn't configured properly. I have an Nvidia 7300gt btw, does anybody know which driver I should be using? [URL] This one should work, I'm not sure what I'm doing incorrectly. it still says $DISPLAY not set when I type startx/ccsm/fusion-icon. And alos when I run pacman -S nvidia, is it downloading version 195.36.24? [URL]

The first problem is that I cannot use the Arch repository. Every time I try to, it brings up a "no address record" error. I have configured my network interface properly and can ping www.google.com and receive a whole load of crap. Definitely working.
Whats wrong?
The second problem is that the boot-up process hangs for a very long time at "Starting Network." This make my boot of Arch just as slow as *buntu! WTF? Whats wrong there? Aside from that, I am unhappy that my Ethernet card is not detected but thats another question. The only ting I am pleased with right now is the speed of the system, and the fact that I used 4 different file systems on 7 different partitions without a hitch.

Is there a way to make the Synaptic on Debian look like Mint's? You can see how more polished Mint's looks versus Debian's 0.6.25 and 0.70. Mint's complies with GTK styling and has a nicer placement of the Quick Search and nicer toolbar icons IMO.

After installing ubuntu 9.10. It's now been a month or so from a fresh reinstall.
Currently for some reason at times my computer slows down where typing starts to lag.
Is there any software that would speed up the linux os. Like for windows there is softwares that would check the registery for errors and shortcut errors etc and fix them.
I use free software like that for windows and works well. I just would like to know if I can get something like that for linux. I know linux dosen't use a regsiter but just saying software that checks the linux system for any errors that could cause the computer to slow down.

I'm on ubuntu 10.04, and pretty new to it - over the last 2 weeks I've done probably 10+ fresh installs due to me not knowing the system, trying things. I looked for a way to back it up and found this guide - [URL]. When I use the feature as listet, it doesn't exclude the folders, and the system is "almost" the same as pre-recovery - and I'm copy/pasting. Is there a way to make a COMPLETE replica of my system, that I can launch when failed, so that - it's back to when I was "ok".. like all programs install post-copy to be gone..

I got BT's repo's set and ready to install, tho I haven't installed them all just yet cause I not wanna crash the system, so I guess what I am asking has anyone sucecfully done this and what are the specific risks here. I have uploaded crunch and that works fine if I do it manually from the command line. the kernal seems to be update-able as well to BT's Kernal, I am not sure if I should do this or not in fear it might crash the Ubuntu system somehow. I guess what I might do next is install everything but the Kernal and install the executable links to the drop down menu by hand per the menu structure.
What I would ideally want is to have all the functionality of BT in Ubuntu which is pretty close to where I am at. Also, when I am done I want to make a live CD of this system so that I not have to do this ever again as it is very time consuming. What program would be used for that? Would any of my user data transfere? I don't want my user data to be transferred to the live CD just the raw system data etc. Anyone done this and would like to chat via skype? that would be best, but I'll take any help I can get at this point. I am using Ubuntu 9.10 for all this.

I just installed a new Ubuntu Studio 11.04 system at home yesterday. It was relatively painless at first but now I'm trying to compile some of the programs that I built the system for and
Code:
./make
simply is not working (returns command not found error). A makefile is present in both of the directories I'm working on.
Code:
man make
works perfectly fine. apt-get install insists that make is present, it also insists that gcc and build-essential are present. Just for the heck of it I reinstalled build-essential but nothing changed. I hesitate to uninstall it or or uninstall make as I have several packages which depend on these and several more which recommend them.
I first got into Linux with Ubuntu Server 10.04 and I remember not being able to compile then but that was because I didn't have gcc or build-essential installed. Once I installed those packages everything was happy. Every google search I perform leads me either to "install build-essentiall / gcc" or to nothing at all. Thoughts on where I can go from here?
