I have dell xps 14 laptop sometimes sound gets choppy it get started breaking in middle of playing music then i need to restart the system to make it work. how to solve this without restarting? i m using ubuntu 10.10
just can't find the answer for this one (after Google and these forums) So I want to configure my Synaptics touchpad in this fashion:
Code: synclient RTCornerButton=8 RBCornerButton=10 LTCornerButton=11 LBCornerButton=12 FastTaps=1 This line of code does what it's intended of it. However, the changes made don't really stick after a system reboot.I'll explain:
So, the "FastTaps" part works flawlessly (as intended). However, the corners bit doesn't work after system reboot!...and weird enough, if I set up a start up script with that bit of code on it it'll only remap the last two corners (LT and LB), because RT and RB always get automatically set to "2" and "3". It's obvious then that those corners are getting remaped somewhere I haven't found yet. I've already tried ppa:yurivkhan/ppa and adding new options to "usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-synaptics.conf" to no avail either. how to make the remap of touchpad corners permanent? P.S. - I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS with Macbuntu.
My network is windows pppoe. How can I configure it for Fedora 11? Is there any graphical configuration tool available for that? Also, ubuntu 9.04 logs into pppoe network after restarting as I've made some changes in /etc/network/interfaces. Is there any option available for Fedora 11 to automatically log in to pppoe network after restarting?
I have just finished the upgrade of the latest version and I'm at the point of my system restating.
My system automatically tried to restart but on the restart I got the 'terminal' view. It stopped when asking for my username (it never normally asks for this before the grub menu) and then password. I didn't get any further than that.
I now have on my screen (still in the terminal view before the grub menu)
"name@name-desktop:...$ "
I'm on my phone now so I don't actually have the symbol for before the dollar sign but your know what it is. The raised S on a 90 degree angle.
I am trying to make multiseat work on my system. (By which I mean I have two keyboards, mice, and monitors, that will act like two separate workstations.Hardware-wise I have a GeForce 210, which has multiple monitor outputs. Keyboards are one PS/2, one USB, mice are both USB. My distro is Kubuntu 10.04.I have dual screens with a single user working fine, but nothing I've tried for multiseat has worked.https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MultiseatX - first seat works fine, nothing on second seat
Xephyr, as discussed here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=620003 - I can't make KDE start in the Xephyr window, it gives dbus errors, and in any case I'm not sure how to get the keyboards and mice set correctly
How to make win32 codecs (package w32codec-all) work on 64 bit system? Simple install of "w32codec-all" package doesn't help. I tried to compile mplayer from sources. After finishing configure, the script returned that win32 codes will be unavailable because of 64-bit system.I need to view some avi-files coded in Intel Indeo 4. As I understand, this codec exists only in win32 codecs.
The only user that can make the sound card work on a F10 x86_64 system is root. For non root users, I am not seeing any error messages when a app tries to use/access the sound card, just nothing plays. As I said, for root everything works as expected. I am sure this is a permission/setup issue, but I have no idea where to start.
I am an absolutely beginner with Linux (ubuntu). I got fed up with widows and decided it was time to go. I installed (clean install from a cd) ubuntu 10.04 on my desktop. It is an hp compaq d220 MT.It looks good and feels good, well at least for a while since it keeps crashing. The screen starts to flicker, goes black, and the only way to get it up and running again is to press the on/off button until the system powers off and restart.
I always use downthemall which is a addon of firefox to download files. but recently i found it can't support reget(after restart the computer). the thing was that i wanted to down load a file which was named ubuntu-10.04-dvd-i386.iso. it is 4GB. and i couldn't finish it at one time. so i paused the download and closed the windows and shutdown the machine. the next day when i turned on the computer and open downthemall to continue my download, but i found that it restart from zero. all my download was wasted. how to fix it?
I am wondering how to add a need to restart notification in a Debian package, so upon installation, it'd pop up something to tell the user to restart the computer for changes to take effect. Perhaps something like what happens with some packages through the update-manager when it prompts the user to restart for the changes to take effect.
Is there any way to do that? Perhaps adding something at the end of a "postinst" file?
Thinking about it, I could just add something like this at the end of the "postinst" file:
Code: notify-send -t 86400000 -i /usr/share/icons/gnome/32x32/status/info.png "Please restart the computer for all changes to take effect."
It'd work, but not as well. For instance, if the person isn't by their computer at the time.
Another option could be using a Zenity dialog box. That might work. Though, if done, wouldn't a yes/no question box keep the actual package from technically finishing until the user would select yes/no to restart?
Sometimes, when I restart, Ubuntu 10.04 doesn't. My monitor just goes to sleep and I end up having to turn off the computer manually and turn it back on.
I am trying setup nfs mount points on my system. when i try to restart nfs-common servic, I get following error. client :~ sudo /etc/init.d/nfs-common restart bash: /etc/init.d/nfs-common: No such file or directory

I can't get flash controls to work. If the video auto-plays, it starts just fine, if not, I'm out of luck. I've tried reinstalling flash through the software center. Even if it autoplays, I can't control volume or pause or anything. I'm at the mercy of whatever is already there.
Ubuntu Karmic 9.10 - all updated as of 1/2/2009 Firefox 3.5.6 On a Lenovo Thinkpad R400
I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my old Toshiba Satellite laptop. I'm dual booting with another Linux distro - ZenMini Everything works O.K. running Ubuntu but I can't restart the system with out it locking up. I have to power down completely from Ubuntu. I don't have any problem restarting with ZenMini so its obviously an Ubuntu problem.
I cannot restart my squeeze as a root user.I try:Code:# shutdown -r nowBroadcast message from root@WZHlinux2 (pts/0) (Fri Jun 3 23:29:33 2011):The system is going down for reboot NOW!
I'm having trouble getting compiz to work on my Laptop. It worked for a while and then I turned on Shift Switcher and a message popped up saying..."The new value for the button binding for the action Terminate in plugin Shift Switcher conflicts with the action Zoom Window of the Scale Addons plugin. Do you wish to disable Zoom Window in the Scale Addons plugin?" I was given the option of Set Terminate anyway, Don't set Terminate, and Disable Zoom Window. I clicked Don't set Terminate and ever since the only thing that works in compiz are the bindings in the general options. I've used synaptic to completely remove and then reinstall compiz but the problem persist. Something else weird, all of the changes I made are still there, even after complete removal, but they don't work?
When I try to hibernate, the computer just goes to a blank, black screen and doesn't turn off. I have to hold the power button to get it to shut down, and when I turn it back on none of the programs running before hibernation have been saved.
I just recently (about an hour ago) installed Ubuntu Netbook edition on my old laptop, and I was greeted with the message, that unity could not be run due to some sort of missing driver...fair enough, I was then greeted with the default Ubuntu desktop, I installed all my needed software (wine, google chrome) and installed the missing display drivers. I then rebooted the system, and once again I am stuck with the default desktop, and not the Unity interface. I checked the software center, and it says Unity IS in fact installed.. And yet I cannot make it appear. So now I ask you Ubuntu veterans. How do I make it work?
P.S. I wiped the system of windows, and the computer is an old HP Pavilion DV6000
I've recently installed 10.04 LTS on a desktop PC so I can use it as a Zabbix monitoring machine.
I fresh installed and all seemed to be well but after a few restarts the system suddenly refused to boot anymore. The BIOS splash screen comes up and then a cursor blinks on the screen for a couple of seconds and then... nothing. The keyboard and monitor both go unresponsive and nothing happens.
I can hear the HD spin up and it isn't making any weird noises. Also, booting from the CD works and I can see and work with the HD so I'm not convinced that this is the problem.
In fact, I actually did a fresh reinstallation of 10.4 onto the machine and started from scratch. Again it ran fine for a few hours while I was setting Zabbix up. After a couple of restarts, again the freeze on boot.
I ran a HD scan and everything seems fine. I've also switched the HD over to the second IDE connection in the box just in case...
Does anyone else have this problem? Is it a bug? Any ideas on how to workaround it? (Short of going back to a previous Ubuntu version)
After Ubuntu update, the system won't restart. Now, after BIOS start, I get the following message:" udevadm trigger is not permitted while udev is unconfigured."Then, after several seconds appear the following message:"Gave up waiting for root device.
I did a bit of searching, but I guess I'm not sure of the terminology associated with what I'm trying to do.
I'm currently connected via ethernet port (NOT wireless) to my DSL modem.
Every so often my connection gets 'saturated', typically after or during a lot of bittorrent activity that maxes out my bandwith, and my speeds drop markedly, even if the bandwith isn't currently being maxed out. I'm not sure whether it's my ISP throttling my connection or something else, but as a work around, I typically just disconnect my modem from the outlet and then replug to restore normal speeds.
Is there a way to 'restart' my modem from the command line in a similar way without having to physically turn off my modem to get the desired effect?
My system doesn't recognize my external HD when I restart. I have to unlug and replug it in every time. Is there a command I could add to startup apps that would do this for me?
I ve installed ubuntu 10.10 on hp g62 amd64, but on skype mic doesnt work. I ve tried playing with pulseaudio controller and everything is unmuted as well as in alsamixer. how can I solve it? i think there is some problem with alsa, because when i restart skype mic work by few minutes but after that not.
I installed Lucid Beta a few days ago and was happy with the way everything worked. The system wanted an update on Thursday night, I installed it and then carried on using it for about an hour, it was then shutdown normally with no errors. On Friday morning it would not boot. I pressed the "on" button it came on, all the other lamps lit ie Caps and Num Lock, the battery light is on anyway, but the hard drive light is not flashing, it's as though it isn't being accessed, but I can hear it? There is no display on the screen. I'm running an Acer Aspire One. My initial thoughts are bios related, but I can't see how that would have changed, then I think maybe the Harddrive is knackered.
am starting to get this figured out. finally got the wifi working on a HP touchsmart tx2 laptop and once i give ubuntu a total system shutdown command this system restarts, is this normal or do i need to fix something?
