View 5 Replies View RelatedI am just starting to learn Linux and am interested in a career in Linux. Actually I wanna go for RHCE, which is the first step for Sys Admin..right?? Basically I do NOT want to go into programming/developing as I don't feel it's my cup of tea (and also may be it sort of boggles me). Still, from what I gather I am having confusions regarding whether I should learn any programming language for a career in Linux.
Here I am avoiding programming..and now I get to hear that Linux career uses programming..That's sort of frustrating...My friend told me I need to "master" C. Do I need to learn some programming language?? If yes, then to how much extent?
Edit: Oops. Sorry if this is in the wrong forum. I meant to post it in the general forums, yet somehow it ended up here. It kind of fits here as well I guess. I am currently trying to move my career forward and am not having much luck. So I've come to see if any of you can offer some fresh advice to help me out.
Let me tell you first where I stand in my career to give you an idea of where I'm starting from. I am currently 26 years old and have recently graduated with a bachelors of computer science from university. I would call myself an average student, nothing special, nor anything horrible. Out of university this landed me an ok job as a PHP developer. However I dont want to stagnate in this position scripting junk all day and not ever challenge myself. not to mention i could certainly rant for a while on the things that fall short at my current position (read: being banned from object oriented programming because the boss cant understand it)
I'd like to find a job that (1) challenges me just the right amount to help me learn and grow but not get overwhelmed in a language I enjoy (hopefully such as C/C++/Java or the like)
(2) is at a company with at least some software design process implemented (agile,xp,etc)and if that is to much to ask, then I'd at least like to move in that direction. So that is what I am looking towards and I would love any advice on how to achieve that. Maybe some of you were in my position 5 or 10 years ago and could shed some light on the subject. I've scoured the internet for job postings that offer what I am looking for, but they are really hard to find. The postings are usually looking for senior or intermediate level programmers with at least 5+ years of experience, or looking for web development script monkeys to make "The next big facebook app" (the job I already have)
I've also considered attending conferences and such, but have never really been, and wouldn't know what to do, or where to even find out about them (I used to see postings every now and then at university, but now I live in a small town.)
Can I make a LiveUSB with persistance that can boot on a Mac or a PC? I have heard about GRUB2 but I have been having trouble installing it. rEFIt can be installed on the Mac and used to boot the USB but I want a method that allows me to bring my flash drive anywhere and boot the OS. I want there to be no required software on the other computer. Is this possible? If so can anybody post a guide on how to do it?

View 10 Replies View RelatedI need to write a small application which needs to detect if the system time is changed by an another application/user and perform some action as soon as it is detected (maybe log the data that time has changed, along with info about which application/user changed it).
How can this be achieved?
I have good programming experiences in shell script, c and beginner level in python.
I don't need to know when it was changed, just need to know who/what changed it.
The system uses NTP to sync the time, but it is also possible for anyone/any application to change the time(for eg: using the simple "date" command as well).

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am setting up a thin client boot (over NFS) with x2go thinclient. So far everything works, the client boots over PXE, mounts the NFS dir on the server. But the x2go thinclient system does not install properly. I end up with a CLI prompt, to log in. It does not start X, not does it start the x2go client in a window managerless X session.
X2go is, in case you don't know it yet, a cool Linux X terminal session system, very much like Nomachines NXserver. I like it very much, since my experience, especially with freenx has not been good.
Now I am missing some Linux knowhow here: I know that after startup (the CLI part), the display manager is started (GDM or KDM), which starts the X server and shows the graphical login. Now since X2go does not properly setup and there is no documentation about the thinclient part, I will set it up myself.
I need the system to boot up, startx and then immediately start an X program (x2goclient), without having to log in before.
I found that putting a .xsession file in to the users home dir causes that script to be run when you invoke startx. But when I put startx in a script that runs as the last one in the runlevel (as in S05startx), it does not run at all.
What is the proper way to run X and a program on it directly, right at startup?
I have a windows computer that has a virus on it. This computer isn't worth much so I don't want to get a virus program to clear it. I know the virus probably won't be able to crash the linux OS, but will it be able to transfer itself to flash drives if I am running linux?

View 3 Replies View RelatedEveryone who deals with Linux knows that partitions on hard drives are designated as "sdx#", i.e., sda1 sdb2, etc. I know through experimentation that the number portion of the designation is assigned not according to order on the disk, but chronologically in the order they are created.
Further, if you have several partitions on the disk-say, sda1 through sda3-and you delete sda2, the designation of sda1 will remain the same, but sda3 will become the new sda2. The creation of any further partitions on the drive will start with designation sda3 and increment from that point.
At times this creates a conundrum, especially concerning bootable partitions. Some time back I rendered a partition containing OpenSUSE unbootable because of this, even though Ubuntu owned the GRUB bootloader in the MBR. Ubuntu's GRUB could find and point to the partition using the command "sudo update-grub", but when OpenSUSE took over the boot-up process, its GRUB was pointed to the wrong partition and would freeze up.
My question is this:
Under Windows, one is able to make a Drive letter persistent. Windows will keep the drive letter for that partition and assign around it. Is there a way to change a drive designation number, or at least make it persistent, under Linux? It would be a handy method to forestall these types of booting problems, among other things.
Presently, when a person has installed Linux side-by-side with Windows and want to delete the Windows partition and expand the Linux partition into the free space, I will tell them to format the partition, then shrink it to next to nothing instead of deleting it. This preserves the partition ID scheme while giving them the space to expand their Linux partition into...especially helpful with a seasoned Linux installation that would be a PITA to reinstall and set back up.
Oh, and I already know about UUID. This article explains it, but if you look down through the comments, you will see reasons that it is problematic for desktop application and usage. I want to make it as simple as possible for new Linux users (and myself! ).

I need to modify fs/open.c and fs/read_write.c to make my modifications. I cannot find any options in 'make menuconfig' to make these files modules rather than compiled elements. I'm thinking these cannot be modules because the file system won't work without open.c and read_write.c. Is this correct - I cannot compile fs/open.c and fs/read_write.c as modules, only as compiled elements? Or, is there some way for a module to overwrite these routines when the module is installed and re-enable the routines when the module is removed?

View 3 Replies View RelatedEarlier today I was reading a webpage while installing an application when suddenly my harddrive starting reading/writing like crazy and my screen practically locked up. I went to tty1 and did "top" to see if there was a single application causing some horrible infinite loop or eating too much memory. Nothing stuck out, so I rebooted my machine. While it was rebooting (since it was still being slow), I looked at the "Mem:" line from "top" and saw that even the 4 GB of swap was exceeded by an entire GB. As of writing this, I only have 20MB of available cache, and it occasionally dips as low as 8MB.
I've done some searching online, and I'm seeing people complaining about X using 250MB of the available memory, and mine is far worse (mine is using a little over 1GB of memory). Some were saying that it is caused by KDE effects (mine are disabled). code...

Currently for some reason at times my computer slows down where typing starts to lag.
Is there any software that would speed up the linux os. Like for windows there is softwares that would check the registery for errors and shortcut errors etc and fix them.
I use free software like that for windows and works well. I just would like to know if I can get something like that for linux. I know linux dosen't use a regsiter but just saying software that checks the linux system for any errors that could cause the computer to slow down.
Are there any tutorials for this? My sister wants a really easy application that pops a random quotation every time she presses on an icon (probably appearing in the panel). I'm fairly experienced in programming, but i've never done desktop apps for ubuntu.

I looked for a way to back it up and found this guide - [URL]. When I use the feature as listet, it doesn't exclude the folders, and the system is "almost" the same as pre-recovery - and I'm copy/pasting. Is there a way to make a COMPLETE replica of my system, that I can launch when failed, so that - it's back to when I was "ok".. like all programs install post-copy to be gone..
