View 3 RepliesI'm running Ubuntu 9.10. I'd really like to make an image of my entire system in the event of a mishap. I've found from experience that anything can happen with Linux and then you're into another reinstall. Anyone know of a good program or process?
View 7 Replies View RelatedDoes anybody know of a program that can make make images of the entire hard drive while it's in use? Like Ghost and Acronis can do? I have a production ubuntu system that I need backups of, however, I can't power it off.
View 8 Replies View Related1. Make a disk image of my 9.10 system (formatted ext3, btw) on my Syology CS407 NAS so I can do a bare metal restore. Why is this a couple of clicks on my Mac and Windows boxes, but so far not easy on Jaunty? Did I miss something?
2. Drivers. Why can't I just have an automatic wrapper for Windows drivers so I can use any printer or scanner, or a simple point and click driver install for native drivers? I have my ethernet connected Brother MFC-7820N, and the Samsung CLP-315 that runs off my CS407 installed and working on my Jaunty, but it was way more work than expected. What is the easy, automatic or point and click way to install drivers?
3. Graphics drivers. I have decent cards in my big boxes, Nvidia GTX 200 series. But when I get kernel updates, I have to uninstall and reinstall the graphics driver. Is there an easy way to keep this working?
4. Is there one flavor of linux distro that has a really consistent standard for user interface? I like to be able move things around, but do like my menus to be consistent (and do I ever hate the MS ribbon!). I've really only tried Ubuntu.
Linux installs have come a long, long way from the old days, and are such a point and click operation that I just wonder what I'm doing wrong. Someone is bound to have sorted these things.
In others machine I can see GUI option to build a ISO image from a cd. In this FC4 can see the option, how to do command mode?

But I just can't get Okular to speak.
View 2 Replies View RelatedOn my old computer I used ANCRONIS to image my system. Even though this was a M$ program it worked. But for some reason, it refuses to boot on my new system. (Freezes)I have tried other imaging software such as GHOST, GHOST for LINUX, a couple of others for linux (I can't recall) & even CLONZILLA. All but Clonzilla refused to boot. Clonzilla, ran & made a backup but the restore had a problem with the GRUB that totally kept my system from booting & no attempt to fix it worked.I even used DEJA DUP & it SEEMS to work but it only restored a very small % of my system. I ended up having to manually restore WAY to much for my liking. - spent the whole evening! DEJA DUP would be nice IF it would do the whole OS, if there is a way I haven't found it, yet.I would like to find another imaging solution, preferably GUI, or some type that will backup & restore the WHOLE OS much like I had with my old machine. I really do NOT want to use DD either.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI need a FREE solution that can image an entire Luks system encrypted volume and the rest of the used HDD, the MBR and /boot partition. Note: MBR and /boot are not encrypted. Note 2: I want to be able to restore entire drive from image with only a couple of steps. Note 3: Destination HDD space is a factor. Image file must be compressed and the image file must be around 40 to 50 GB or less. The smaller the image the better.
I have used clonezilla live cd before but not for encrypted volumes. I know you can install it in Linux. But, I don't know how to configure it after installation. I would be very happy if someone could tell me how to configure clonezilla in Fedora. How to guides are also welcome. I have one more question. If I image the encrypted volumes and all the stuff I mentioned above while logged in to Fedora, and I restore the drive from the image, will the recovered drive still be encrypted?
Can one make a self booting installation ISO on a flash drive of Fedora 14 as it is, with all my files being in the new install, so I can install this modified operating system on my relatives computers just like I have it on mine, or for if ever the operating system on mine fails, so I can use this flash drive ISO to reinstall the operating system on mine just like I like it, just like it is now? If this can be done, please tell me how you do it, or kindly provide me with a link to a page that has this information.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm helping a colleague with his laptop, he finds the fonts within programs too small and they hurt his eyes. We have tried changed the fonts using System>Appearances>Fonts. Changed the dpi resolution in the "Details" section, and tried changing the screen resolution, but this doesn't work or make it better.
I have attached a screen shot to show the problem. As I hope you can see, the font size on the desktop and top tool bar is much larger than within the programs.
Can anyone help, we have looked through all of the menus we can think of, but nothing makes the font bigger.

I need to make a disk image of Jaunty. Something like Acronis True Image or Norton Ghost in the Windows contingence. I have tried Remastersys and Ghost 4 Linux. The former simply created an ISO file, which is 1/10th of the size of my hard drive and I do not know how to restore my computer using the ISO. The latter seems to be stuck at 0% even after leaving my PC on for 4 hours and verifying that all the settings are correct.

View 3 Replies View RelatedThe only user that can make the sound card work on a F10 x86_64 system is root. For non root users, I am not seeing any error messages when a app tries to use/access the sound card, just nothing plays. As I said, for root everything works as expected. I am sure this is a permission/setup issue, but I have no idea where to start.
