He tried to do a regular upgrade and after it installed his screen had wallpaper and that's it. No icons or task bar or anything. He decided to do a clean install to see if that would help, and it's still that way.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm a pretty much a linux newbie with some spare compy parts so I've decided to make a server to further my experience in the linux world. I recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop (was easier than Server edition with no GUI). What I want is a file server to share movies / music with my friends at school, that we could remotely access from school. I would like to leave this server at home.
I have read a lot on the net but I have not found someone with the same situation as me so have not got far. This would probably involve a single user login which I would give all so it would be strictly read-only, while only 1 user (me) would have admin capabilities. Is this even possible? I would be willing to try Ubuntu 10.04 server if anyone thinks it would be easier.
Ok so i have a IOn based PC that i use for only xbmc. I previously had a full ubuntu 9.11 install.
I had to reformat the drive but i could not get audio working. I gave the ION Optimized live CD a go and it worked with HDMI audio running perfectly. The thing is when i close xbmc i don't have a desktop, it just goes to command line.
I need to install lirc, copy some keymap files into my xbmc folder and then setup wireless. What would be the best way? Can it all be done through command line? Can i install a desktop environment?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI just recently installed Kubuntu desktop onto Ubuntu and I don't have any shutdown or restart options shown in KDE, but they show up in Gnome. I initially installed Kubuntu using GDM instead of KDM and switched to KDM when I saw that my Gnome taskbars overlayed my KDE taskbars. To switch from GDM to KDM I used the following command:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm
After enabling KDM the terminal suggested a command to configure KDM, however I can't remember the command. I ran it and I got a message that KDM was already configured.
I have apache2 on my system, and it stopped working since the router was messed with (not by me). I removed apache2 and deleted /etc/apache2, but if I install apache2 it doesn't bring the files back. Installing on 10.10 64-bit works fine following the instructions on url. The BBC Desktop functions well once I reenabled KWallet.
My problem is that when I refresh the repositories the BBC Desktop is reported as broken, and the reason seems to be that AdobeAir does not show as installed in Synaptic. It does not matter if I install AdobeAir using .deb or .bin, it still is not reported as installed. Any ideas about how to make AdobeAir show as installed?
I am using Ubuntu Maverick and I wanted to try the xubuntu desktop environment, so I installed xubuntu-desktop package from synaptic package manager. There were many programs automatically installed with the xubuntu-desktop.After trying the xubuntu desktop, I didn't like it and removed it from synaptic package manager but it didn't remove the programs which were automatically installed with it.Is there any way to remove those programs without having to remove them one by one?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have been doing some research on problems I have been having and I have narrows Compiz down to being the problem. I am running the prop Nvidea driver. I can use Unity 2d fine however I cannot use Unity at all I just get a blank screen with the mouse cursor no desktop ever loads. I have tried switching between gdm and kdm. I have now worked out that compiz looks like the problem. If I issue a compiz --replace at the terminal I get the same sort of problem I get when I log into the Unity 3d. I loose my left hand monitor (it goes black but I can move my mouse around) and on my right hand monitor I can operate things using the keyboard but when you click with the mouse it does not work although you can move it around fine. Never used Compiz and I dont know if anyone knows any troubleshooting I can try I have exhausted what I could find on the Internet (A few exports of global variables but none fixed anything).

I've had a go with a netbook and 11.2. Installed ok and X configured KDE desktop with default 1024x600.
Minor. Most apps on running fit between top and panel but then you run their menu item like 'settings' or 'prefs' and its window size is coming up >600 in height. Some allow a scrollbar on the right but for those not, the result is not seeing the 'ok, apply, cancel' buttons. I did find that changing certain font sizes under System Settings both up and down and re-logging in sorted that for most.
If you click the top-left icon on a window you get to the special window settings and can see and change the geometry. However, for some that didn't respond to the font change above and seem to be hardcoded geometry-wise for a 1024x768 minimum, the result is a "squashed" window. Certain button options seen in the normal window are not there or the items are overlayed on each other.
Specific is Okteta the hex editor.Major. I don't use a wheelscroll mouse on other pcs. This netbook has a trackpad with the rightside 7mm or so having a scroll facility. In editor or Firefox running a fingertip on it will scroll the pages which is nice instead of looking and clicking in the scrollbar.
What is NOT nice, I found, is that if the cursor arrow is over a desktop patch and my finger hits that 7mm part of the trackpad when I want to move the arrow, it results in switching between desktops. I wondered what the hell happened when the apps and console I had up disappeared then reappeared then.OK this is the wonderful KDE4 where you can do anything and customise as you like. Well no, not about this. Funnily enough it shows up in the KDE handbook help about being an option in the desktop numbers section but of course isn't there. A fallback entry from previous help version it seems.
I've seen, and have some to make of, the general KDE4 crits but this one's a real WTF. So desk users with a wheelmouse doing some critical reading of some file or webpage could have that rudely interrupted just because their hand moves inadvertently? OK, maybe I should direct at KDE people, but is this fixable in the supplied 11.2 KDE4 or later KDE4.x ?
I have the Suse DVD with me. I need to know if I will get the KDE or the Gnome Desktop features installed as Default.
