General :: Tail File If The Name Is Changeable?
Jan 1, 2010am facing a problem with tailing a log file. Logs of application located in one folder:applog_20100101_0200.log <--log until 2 am january 1applog_20100101_0456.log <--log until 4:56 amapplog.log <-- current logApplication can change log when ever it wants to. I need to monitor this log, what i do:tail -f applog.logBut when app changes log my tail just stops. How can i tail applog.log all the time with out stops?

May 27, 2010I'm trying to make a script run when x is started (to set the desktop background using xloadimage, run xcompmgr, and make one change with xmodmap [I suspect there is a better way to change this]). The wiki says (on the subject of .xinitrc) "If you want the script to be called when ever an X Session is started, then you should instead use ~/.xsession" I had no default ~/.xsession file. I believed that it would be checked for, so created a minimal file

and gave it executable permissions (744).
"allow-user-xsession" is present in /etc/X11/Xsession.options.
However, ~/.xsession does not run when x starts.
1) Should I be using something other than .xsession for this?
2) If not, how do I enable it? Or am I making some error that prevents it from running?

Indeed, I can simply uncheck this setting and manually adjust, but then my changes would apply to all themes, if I were to change my theme in the future.How can I edit the transparency of the GTK theme itself so that it applies to gnome-terminal?I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 with the "Ambiance" theme, and I'm seeing these files which are probably relevant. Am I on the right track? (those files don't contain anything obvious like "transparency" or "opacity" to change ... so I"m not exactly sure what/where to change)

Apr 3, 2011I have spent the most part of 5 hours trying to fix this issue. For some reason I cannot change the background image to any of mt .jpg wallpaper files (and .png files). I've tried using the Ubuntu-Tweak application, but I end up getting a purple screen (default) or a black screen (default). So then I tried using the terminal method by making the Appearance window appear when I would log out. That works, except when I go to use my background image, it shows as a question mark for the image preview, and the icon for the file is a gray box. All while doing this my background images that I tested are all in the /usr/share/backgrounds location. Please help! I really want to get rid of the default images and use my images... :/ My desktop/screen in 1440x900, and most my background images are around that size. They work with my regular desktop for my account.

So I'm still using the Ubuntu Lucid default bootloader grub2. I can boot up opensuse correctly. the nagging thing is that there's no splash screen show up during the boot process, instead, lines of command are flashing, the console background is also missing and the font under console (tty1-6) is huge. what can I do to have these back to opensuse? the current entry in grub2 for opensuse

Ubuntu :: Software To Make System Faster?
Mar 24, 2010After installing ubuntu 9.10. It's now been a month or so from a fresh reinstall.
Currently for some reason at times my computer slows down where typing starts to lag.
Is there any software that would speed up the linux os. Like for windows there is softwares that would check the registery for errors and shortcut errors etc and fix them.
I use free software like that for windows and works well. I just would like to know if I can get something like that for linux. I know linux dosen't use a regsiter but just saying software that checks the linux system for any errors that could cause the computer to slow down.

May 3, 2011I got BT's repo's set and ready to install, tho I haven't installed them all just yet cause I not wanna crash the system, so I guess what I am asking has anyone sucecfully done this and what are the specific risks here. I have uploaded crunch and that works fine if I do it manually from the command line. the kernal seems to be update-able as well to BT's Kernal, I am not sure if I should do this or not in fear it might crash the Ubuntu system somehow. I guess what I might do next is install everything but the Kernal and install the executable links to the drop down menu by hand per the menu structure.
What I would ideally want is to have all the functionality of BT in Ubuntu which is pretty close to where I am at. Also, when I am done I want to make a live CD of this system so that I not have to do this ever again as it is very time consuming. What program would be used for that? Would any of my user data transfere? I don't want my user data to be transferred to the live CD just the raw system data etc. Anyone done this and would like to chat via skype? that would be best, but I'll take any help I can get at this point. I am using Ubuntu 9.10 for all this.

simply is not working (returns command not found error). A makefile is present in both of the directories I'm working on.

works perfectly fine. apt-get install insists that make is present, it also insists that gcc and build-essential are present. Just for the heck of it I reinstalled build-essential but nothing changed. I hesitate to uninstall it or or uninstall make as I have several packages which depend on these and several more which recommend them.
I first got into Linux with Ubuntu Server 10.04 and I remember not being able to compile then but that was because I didn't have gcc or build-essential installed. Once I installed those packages everything was happy. Every google search I perform leads me either to "install build-essentiall / gcc" or to nothing at all. Thoughts on where I can go from here?

What I want is to customize Linux startup and Desktop in a way that my software starts automatically and the user does not become aware that what he sees on screen is a software running in a PC. For this i need to customize the startup, wich I've read that can be done changing the pictures in /usr/share/images/xsplash. After that, I need that my software starts automatically (that's not hard) and the tricky part: to delete or make unvisible every menu and to disable any key combination that could close or minimize my software. If I could, I would also like the PC to power down if my software crushes or closes (I could do this with another software running checking the previous).
Any ideas on where to start? I've still haven't started to program, so I've not yet decided if I would use GTK or another framework.
