Yesterday I tried running pacman -Syu to update my system, but the cups package keeps conflicting and stops the whole process. This is what happens when I try to just upgrade cups:

Can anyone explain why a 64 bit kernel builds a bzImage in both arch/x86 and arch/x86_64- is there a difference between the two?
View 2 Replies View RelatedEarlier today I was reading a webpage while installing an application when suddenly my harddrive starting reading/writing like crazy and my screen practically locked up. I went to tty1 and did "top" to see if there was a single application causing some horrible infinite loop or eating too much memory. Nothing stuck out, so I rebooted my machine. While it was rebooting (since it was still being slow), I looked at the "Mem:" line from "top" and saw that even the 4 GB of swap was exceeded by an entire GB. As of writing this, I only have 20MB of available cache, and it occasionally dips as low as 8MB.
I've done some searching online, and I'm seeing people complaining about X using 250MB of the available memory, and mine is far worse (mine is using a little over 1GB of memory). Some were saying that it is caused by KDE effects (mine are disabled). code...
I've recently upgraded Arch kernel on my laptop to 2.6.38.4 and after reboot I found out that eth0 is missing in ifconfig -a (it only showed lo and wlan0). The same issue is in 2.6.38.5 that came out just couple of days ago. Any idea what can be causing this? What info should I add?

I just did the pacman -Syu command today since i have had limited access to internet i could use with arch lately, (been tethering via droid which is only compatible in ubuntu) The command line works fine, i even reinstalled X to see if that was the problem,whenever i do startx it loads up for a second but before my xfce screen even pops up the screen blinks and blackens.

While using monofree package, trying to install mono presents a conflict but aptitude just erases monofree and installs mono anyway.Is there a way to force the system to keep monofree and show an error when I try to install something that conflicts?

Ive recently been looking into other distros and came across arch linux. As i installed arch it was recommended that you create partitions for various directories, such as boot, tmp etc.
Ive read the advantages of this and would now like to set ubuntu up in a similar fashion, alongside arch. Whats the 'best' way to do this. Can ubuntu use the partitions set up by arch? Will i have to reinstall ubuntu? eh i dont know if my question makes sense since its late here and its a topic i know little about. I'm trying to put music on a 2GB blue 3rd gen iPod Shuffle (the long metal bodied version) using gtkpod on current Arch Linux. While the files get stored on the ipod, when I try to listen to music the ipod just says "please use iTunes to sync music". The model in question is listed as supported by gtkpod, so What's going wrong?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a HP Officejet G85 and I just upgraded my system, which included the whole printer subsystem, and lost my printing. I have tried adding it via KDE's print dialog as well as directly via CUPS (localhost:631), to no avail.
I have searched all over the web for a couple of days, and can find similar stuff, but no resolution. I think it may be new (I just upgraded most of my system) in the latest releases of cups/hplip/.etc. Also, after the upgrade my hp-toolbox quit working, telling me I don't have qt4 installed, which I do.
Perfectly working 9.10 just upgrade to 10.04, and now CUPS won't play ball. Any time I try to add a printer with the inbuilt Printer admin utility I get the message:
There was an error during the CUPS operation: 'server-error-internal-error'
If I try and add the printer using http://localhost:631 - any operation gives me:
631 - Request Entity Too Large
My previously installed printer has been removed automagically. Boo. So far I have:
aptitude purge cups
aptitude install cups
Which has made absolutely no difference.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI have a 2010 model laptop running slackware 13.1, and after setting up a udev rule for my epson rx700 printer/scanner, this laptop can print to the rx700 without problems, and I can scan straight into gimp with xsane... I can even share the printer and scanner over my local lan.however when I pack up my laptop and hit the road, the other folks in the house cannot print or scan over the network anymore, so I tried to get an older desktop we have laying about to be the cups / sane server instead of my laptop.I tried a Dell Dimension 8300, and a Dell Optiplex GX 260. Both have USB 2.0 however, on fresh slackware 13.37 installs, even after the udev rule, neither old computer is successful finding the scanner with sane-find-scanner, although it is listed in output of lsusb.
does anyone know if there is a workaround on these older machines, or have there been some hardware changes in the last 8 years that the machines haven't undergone, and I should give up trying to get one to be cups/sane server for rx700..
My Arch Linux can't update for over a few weeks now! It just says that everything is up to date and quits. But I hardly believe there weren't any updates, before there were a few updates a day!

I've also turned the printer off and restarted it several times. Every time it comes back online it starts printing blank pages again. My paper does not need to be heat treated. It's fine as it is. So, how to I stop this waste of electricity and printer MTBF? What else might be sending commands to the printer besides the CUPS system?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a printer configured on my Ubuntu server using CUPS amd made it available to the local network. The printer is recognized on my other Ubuntu machine without any problems.
But on my Suse laptop, the printer is not recognized. Using the YaST printer Configuations, I choose the option "Recieve Printer Information from Remote CUPS servers. But no printer is found.But... when I choose Do All Yout Printing Directly via One Remote CUPS server and enter the correct IP address (192.168.1.100), the printer is found andI am sure the printer info is broadcasted because it shows up on my second Ubuntu PC. But why is it not recognized by default on my Suse machine

On a new Dell Lattitude e6400, I have installed both arch and Ubuntu. Ubuntu recognized wifi and ethernet right away and connected and is working fine, but in arch, I am having more problems then I usually do when using arch. From the output of lspci the ethernet is a intel device 1502, I have researched this and found it to need the e1000e module as its driver. I modprobed this module sucessfully, but no ethernet. With wlan, i have found that the card is a DW1501 Wireless-N WLAN Half-Mini Card that has a broadcom 4727 chip in it. I downloaded the windows driver for this chip and isntalled it with ndiswrapper but this did not help. What I think is the root of the problem is the error message that restarting networking creates.

I noticed that the clock in the FVWM taskbar displays UTC instead of my local time. And when I execute the date command, it shows the time zone as UTC. I wonder how to set it to display my local time zone?

Basically, I installed Arch (in vmware) then ran: pacman -Syu, pacman -S libgl xorg mesa xf86-video-vesa hal xf86-input-evdev xf86-input-mouse xf86-input-keyboard compiz-fusion alsa alsa-util nvidia I've also added a user. I'm following the wiki guide but I'm not sure where to go from here. here's the error messages:

basically it says that my nvidia driver is incorrect or isn't configured properly. I have an Nvidia 7300gt btw, does anybody know which driver I should be using? [URL] This one should work, I'm not sure what I'm doing incorrectly. it still says $DISPLAY not set when I type startx/ccsm/fusion-icon. And alos when I run pacman -S nvidia, is it downloading version 195.36.24? [URL]
The first problem is that I cannot use the Arch repository. Every time I try to, it brings up a "no address record" error. I have configured my network interface properly and can ping www.google.com and receive a whole load of crap. Definitely working.
Whats wrong?
The second problem is that the boot-up process hangs for a very long time at "Starting Network." This make my boot of Arch just as slow as *buntu! WTF? Whats wrong there? Aside from that, I am unhappy that my Ethernet card is not detected but thats another question. The only ting I am pleased with right now is the speed of the system, and the fact that I used 4 different file systems on 7 different partitions without a hitch.

I'm in a bind and I don't know how to get what I want. Nmap shows ipp running cups on port 631. Great, simple enough I uninstall cups, along with its dependencies. A new portscan reveals that the port is closed SUCCESS, but... Ubuntu Update Manager nags me @ every restart about the "important security" updates. I can't lock the version of cups in Synaptic, because cups is not installed! So you see I'm in a bind. If I have cups installed I have an open port, and if I uninstall cups the update manager nags me. What do I do? I've tried:
- stopping the cups service and issuing the chkconfig cups off command... (doesn't close the port)
- uninstalling cups... (update manager nags)
- fuser -k 631/tcp (great, but @ reboot the port is still open)
Please teach me how to close this port / stop this service / tell update manager to shove cups.....
Even if im logged into root I cant edit or view any files. Like if I type /etc/rc.conf in Arch it, says "permission denied" so how do I edit this file cuz I need to put gdm and dbus in my daemons

I installed pyxattr to play around with, and when I try to set them it says that the operation is not supported. Does Arch Linux not support xattr, or how do I enable them?

But I cannot connect. If I remove WPA or any security from the wireless connection(from my wifi router) I can connect to wireless network without any issue. But when there is any security is involved to the connection it does not connect. How to connect to wireless. I've been using debian for a long time, but there was no any issue with this connecting thing. I am new to arch linux.
