Software :: Using Screen Command/feature - How To Fix Windows Scrolling
May 7, 2010
I'm trying to figure out how it's possible to fix so that scrolling of text works.
Example:
I ssh somewhere if I work here ls or more huge text file then I can easy have x=100 or even 1000 lines. it's possible to scroll up and down in the window to se text etc. Then I start screen cmd... then I only have that amount of screen hight and width of the original screen visible from the first window when I started the screen function. How do one configure so that it is possible to scroll indefinite if I for instance do a more command on a text file with some 1000 lines?

I'm trying to fix this screen problem I continue to have (an example: in Evolution, its like my screen is too small to see everything, I have to scroll over down or over, then the window moves over and pulls me back to original spot. I've tried to change the screen resolution and that actually makes things worse. The screen problem is very irritating and I don't know why its happening. I've been using Ubuntu or Mint for years and have never had this problem.
Also, a similar problem but nowhere near as annoying: the sides of either side of screen are black. I can't get the monitor to be completely filled. I went to Intel's website and they have a few drivers compatible for linux (at least that is what they are saying).
I'm using Ubuntu lts 10.04 lucid lynx
2.6.32-32-generic
mscatamaran@mscatamaran-desktop:~$ lspci

Does anyone know what happened to the Multiseat feature that had been in the feature list at one point?To briefly summarise, a single machine with multiple graphics cards, sound cards, keyboards & mice provides multiple seats for users. Each user gets their own monitor, keyboard, mouse & perhaps audio. The rest of the machine resources are then shared.
The last I saw on the topic was this discussion, although I have a recollection that there was going to be support in a newer version of X.Org. I've googled around quite a bit, but can't seem to find anything.
Anybody know anything? It would be a great feature to have and it's frustrating to have had such an omission since F8 :-o

I'm a day-1 Ubuntu user with a question about getting multi-touch scrolling enabled on my laptop automatically each time 10.04 loads. I'm very green when it comes to all-things-Linux. Basically, I'm just searching for help, following step-by-step guides, and copying-and-pasting commands. I found the following website that helped me create a little script to enable multi-touch control:[URL]...
But I can't figure out the last step: "All you need to do to have this run at startup [instead of typing ./2fsrl in terminal manually each time] is add it to you startup programs." I tried creating a file path to the 2fsrl file in Preferences -> Startup Applications program, but upon re-starting the laptop, the multi-touch isn't enabled anymore. I'm sure I'm missing something simple. Can anyone advise? (Keep in mind my beginner's status!)

I moved from a Linux environment from one company to another and one annoying difference came out:When I used to run an application in a terminal (no GUI), the transcript lines were presented one the window - when the window was full then the scrolling of the lines would continue only if one hit the space bar to proceed (of course waiting to user input did not stop the run).
In the new environment the behavior is different - transcript lines keep going on and on so I need to scroll up - and moreover each page-up command is cancelled by the new lines appearing.perhaps this is also reproduce with other Linux commands , say "find" or "ls".

One thing I loved when I checked out the live cd of Lucid was the fact it had a nice drop down list with lots of screen resolutions to choose from, does Karmic have that same feature?

I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 and in short, in my experience, it's terrible. All it did was bug my machine. When I enter the wrong credentials on login, it spins forever "checking" so I have to restart the computer. When I enter any credentials to unlock my computer after a lock screen (even if they are perfectly correct) it spins forever "checking." So I disabled the lock screen on sleep feature, which I hate having to do because I live on a college campus where anyone could pick up the computer and look at my notes without a password, but I have no alternative. Also the fingerprint scnaner on my lenovo worked perfectly before the upgrade and now it doesn't, it's apparent that it is very messed up, lighting up sometimes, and mostly not when it should. Additionally, I can't update my computer or download anything from the software center because it believes my root password to be incorrect. no matter what. This is the most frustrating thing I have ever encountered in day to day ubuntu use and I might just switch OS's because this is just counterproductive and a waste of time.

I used to have a feature that when you had more than one application on screen, and clicked one behind the active app, the active one would then fold back behind the new application. Like the active app would place itself behind the new app in the same way you would bring a card forward in front of another if you were playing cards. I hope that makes sense.. Anywho, I lost that setting and can't seem to find it again. And is it possible to have a plasma screen in gnome, if so, how?

I had to disable "smooth scrolling"
Edit > Preferences > Advanced > General > Smooth Scrolling
I'm using LXDE on a HP510 Laptop, it's onboard graphics chipset is a: Intel Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller. I am not using an xorg.conf file, so the settings are just the default autodetect ones I assume. I've noticed it when scrolling in firefox, and can't seem to get it to do it when scrolling in other applications, but I haven't really used this laptop much since installing the Fedora 12 LXDE spin recently. I'm not sure what information to supply that will help you help me. Here is a screenshot to show what happens.
I dunno what the big black box is, its only visible on the screenshot. I had to bind a script to printscreen to get it to make a screenshot, so its probably something I need to do here to get rid of it?
Code:
#!/bin/bash
DATE=`date +%Y-%m-%d %H-%M`
import -window root "$HOME/Desktop/screenshot $DATE.png"
I also can't get the touchpad scrolling to work. Or my external monitor without some issues. So I think I will be making an xorg.conf file at some point.

"screen tearing" whenever I scroll, watch flash videos, or any videos in general. I first noticed this in Fedora 14, and now I notice the same behaviour in Linux Mint.Does anyone know what might be causing this? My Graphics Card is: Nvidia Geforce GTX 280M (1GB) I'm using Nvidia proprietary drivers. Reading some forums I see that the problem might be related to Compiz. Here's my xorg.conf file (if needed);
Code:

I Have installed openSUSE 11.3 using VMWare and liked it so I thought I would install as my main OS. So I downloaded the latest livecd Gnome and created a usb install using imagewriter with suse. I can boot to the initial menu asking if I want to boot the livecd or install. If I choose either it will begin to show a lot of things on the screen scrolling really fast and then the screen will go black. I've waiting up to about 15 minutes with no result.

I'm using a java application that runs as an interactive command line (in a terminal). My problem is that it's rather unfriendly as an interaction mode as it's minimalistic: it doesn't allow going to and fro with arrows, there's no history and so on. So I have to type all commands every time and have to retype it if I missed something at the beginning of the line, or I have to copy and paste from a txt editor. The strange thing is that I have seen the same application running on a Windows box and allowing for all the sugar. So I'm not sure if it's because of the shell script I run (as opposed to the .bat) or whether it has to do with system or profile settings in my shell.
For information, the shell script starts with:
Code:
#!bin/sh
I've replaced it with:
Code:
#!bin/bash
In hope I would have something closer to my normal terminal. The app runs but it doesn't change anything to the interactive mode. I'm rather clueless regarding sh/bash and so on. I've seen the manuals but I'm not entirely at home understanding and using their options. I know that there's a .bashrc and perhaps something like a profile somewhere, but I don't really know how to do things with these without risking messing up.

I burned and checked the image, but cannot install or upgrade ( I DL both the full and alternate image) Hangs on the Ubuntu screen with the scrolling dots. After this, I tried mounting and running the install from the iso, but since all the files are either .inf or unknown, I don't know how. Next, I tried a trick from the ubuntu site using alt+F2 to run from the iso, and it seemed to work, but now it still tries to DL the updates from the internet instead of just getting them from the ISO. This also happens now if I try to upgrade from the update manager, it keeps asking for the install disk. Is there any way to just use the ISO as though it were a disk? I have been running 9.10 for months with no problems.

I recently bought a 37" Vizio M370NV HDTV and connected it to my Kubuntu 10.10 desktop.Currently my resolution is 1280x1024, so there is black bars on the side of my screen. I want my resolution to be 1920x1080, which is what the TV/monitor says is it's primary resolution. However, when I set that resolution in nvidia-settings, my screen scrolls up. By that I mean that my screen keeps moving up my monitor and appearing at the bottom.

Have tried a couple of options such a resize box and change from full size but these do not help reduce size of Fedora display. Am wondering if it as something to do with the rectangular size of laptop monitor???

Alright, on my last Linux installation I know I did not get graphics lag this bad.
So I go to move a window around, Nautilus, Firefox, a Terminal, and when I move it it takes a second to reach the location and refresh on my screen, and if I move my mouse within that time period then it will move the window somewhere I did not want it.
I disabled Smooth Scrolling in Preferences => Advanced => General for Firefox but I do not think it helped. It takes ages to scroll to where I want it and by the time it gets there it keeps going because I scrolled too many times. I receive scrolling lag on seemly any document of text, this includes gedit as well.
I'm working on finding out what graphics card I have so I can see if it has Linux drivers. I know it is an ATI, but I have no idea how to get its name using Linux commands.

I used a Karmic Live CD to make a forensic image off of a older Windows computer that has a fat32 drive. Immediately after booting it said it was correcting a problem on the drive, I assume that it was running fsck on it. I want to customize my own live CD to not do this. Though I suppose it doesn't do it for ntfs since there isn't a fsck for it yet.

Unfortunately, I've encountered a disaster the likes of which I've never seen before:Yesterday, in slackware 13.1, while using firefox, the window would no longer move or resize, and I could no longer click on things in that window.While this happens, the icons in xfce4 panel no longer acknowledge that the mouse is rolling over them, so I can't launch terminal from a panel, etc.; however I am still able to right click on desktop and open terminal and other apps that way.Since it was high time to upgrade to 13.37, and since I was experiencing weirdness, I decided to do a clean install: I actually repartitioned my drive, and reformatted the partitions (all xfs, and after backing up my data, of course)...
I don't know if that's significant, or not. there seems to be some lines in /var/log/Xorg.0.log about my logitech mouse.way too complicated to write by hand.I will log out and back on... sometimes that frees up other windows. Then I'll add the Xorg.0.log.

I'm having a very faint but noticeable electric-like buzzing/grinding. It is not the hard drive but sounds very similar.
It occurs when i move scroll bars, or drag windows. It is highly replicable.
The only other time this has happens is when i install KDE which resulted in me reinstalling. Something id prefer to avoid. I haven't installed KDE this time, but this seems to have started immediately after replacing my fstab file which i accidentally deleted. That's the only thing i can think of.
