Ubuntu :: Karmic Choose Screen Resolution Feature?

Jun 21, 2010

One thing I loved when I checked out the live cd of Lucid was the fact it had a nice drop down list with lots of screen resolutions to choose from, does Karmic have that same feature?

Ubuntu :: Screen Resolution - Only Choose 800x600 ?

Mar 3, 2011

I have a good Asus monitor in which I can have a resolution of 1280x800 when using Mac Os (I have a Power Mac G4). However, when I try to have a better resolution with Ubuntu, the only resolution that it lets me choose is 800x600! There are no choices. I tried the "detect display" button but it doesn't change anything.

Ubuntu :: How Does Karmic Set Text Console Screen Resolution

Jan 21, 2010

I'm trying to track down a screen resolution issue (Karmic on an Acer SK20 [Intel 945 graphics] with Acer AL1511 flat panel via VGA) and mechanism for setting the framebuffer screen resolution after GRUB2 has loaded the kernel but before X starts.

Before I forced it to behave itself by adding an xorg.conf with a lone "Modes" entry for 1024x768, X was setting the panel to 640x350 by default. It appears from looking at get-edid | parse-edid that this is because 640x350 is the only resolution this idiot panel's EDID says it knows about, even though its native resolution is in fact 1024x768.

So the GUI works fine now, but all the text consoles (Ctrl-Alt-F1 through F6) are still operating at 640x350 and look terrible; also, because usplash doesn't know what to do with 640x350, I don't get my nice white Ubuntu logo before GDM starts.

In previous releases, I would have dealt with something like this by adding vga=791 to the kernel boot options. That doesn't work for the Karmic kernel, and GRUB2 whines about it being deprecated and tells me to use "set gfxpayload=1024x768x16,1024x768" on a line before the "linux" command instead.

Things I have already tried, with no success:

1. Adding "set gfxpayload=1024x768x16,1024x768" into the boot sequence, right before the "linux" line, by using GRUB2's inbuilt boot sequence editor (Ctrl-E): no change.

2. Changing the GRUB_GFXMODE= line in /etc/default/grub and running update-grub: changes the resolution used for GRUB's own menu, but as soon as the kernel boots it's back to 640x350 on text consoles.

3. Same as (2) but also adding a "set gfxpayload=keep" line in /etc/grub.d/00_header, right after the "set gfxmode=${GRUB_GFXMODE}" line: same effect as (2).

4. Removing the "splash" option from the "linux" line. No change (I guess this is because usplash didn't work anyway at 640x350). By the way, usplash.conf is set up for 1024x768 and yes, I did remember to dpkg-reconfigure -phigh usplash to rebuild the initramfs after checking this.

where exactly does Karmic set the screen resolution for its text consoles, and how can I force it to ignore this LCD panel's bogus EDID?

Ubuntu Installation :: Karmic To Lucid : Screen Resolution

Apr 29, 2010

On the 28th of April I upgraded my system (laptop with "SIS Mirage 3 Graphics" video card) from Karmic to Lucid and my screen resolution was reduced from 1024*768 to 800*600. I tried during one day to find the suitable driver but no luck on SIS web page.

I eventually found it on the followwing address : [URL]

It works very well and the resolution has jumped now to 1280*800. The only remaining and identified problem is with grub2 : my system is dual-boot (Windows XP and Ubuntu) and the "recovery" mode does not work anymore for ubuntu, I will maybe have to wait for a next update.

Ubuntu :: Disabled Lock Screen On Sleep Feature

Oct 25, 2010

I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 and in short, in my experience, it's terrible. All it did was bug my machine. When I enter the wrong credentials on login, it spins forever "checking" so I have to restart the computer. When I enter any credentials to unlock my computer after a lock screen (even if they are perfectly correct) it spins forever "checking." So I disabled the lock screen on sleep feature, which I hate having to do because I live on a college campus where anyone could pick up the computer and look at my notes without a password, but I have no alternative. Also the fingerprint scnaner on my lenovo worked perfectly before the upgrade and now it doesn't, it's apparent that it is very messed up, lighting up sometimes, and mostly not when it should. Additionally, I can't update my computer or download anything from the software center because it believes my root password to be incorrect. no matter what. This is the most frustrating thing I have ever encountered in day to day ubuntu use and I might just switch OS's because this is just counterproductive and a waste of time.

Ubuntu :: Compiz Feature To Manage More Than One Application On Screen

Nov 2, 2010

I used to have a feature that when you had more than one application on screen, and clicked one behind the active app, the active one would then fold back behind the new application. Like the active app would place itself behind the new app in the same way you would bring a card forward in front of another if you were playing cards. I hope that makes sense.. Anywho, I lost that setting and can't seem to find it again. And is it possible to have a plasma screen in gnome, if so, how?

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Get To The Screen That Allows To Choose An Operating System

Dec 2, 2010

I recently upgraded to the newest version of Ubuntu. I dual boot with Windows 7.

All was going fine the first few times I used my system after the upgrade but I have now run into a serious problem. I'm not that technical so will explain this as best i can.

Basically, when I switch my computer on, I can not get to the screen that allows me to choose an operating system. Before it gets there it just restarts.

I guess its a problem with the GNU GRUB software. It just seems like the computer can't find it and restarts itself. So I can't get into either Ubuntu or Windows at the moment.

Fedora :: Multiseat Feature That Had Been In The Feature List At One Point?

Mar 9, 2010

Does anyone know what happened to the Multiseat feature that had been in the feature list at one point? To briefly summarise, a single machine with multiple graphics cards, sound cards, keyboards & mice provides multiple seats for users. Each user gets their own monitor, keyboard, mouse & perhaps audio. The rest of the machine resources are then shared.

The last I saw on the topic was this discussion, although I have a recollection that there was going to be support in a newer version of X.Org. I've googled around quite a bit, but can't seem to find anything.

Anybody know anything? It would be a great feature to have and it's frustrating to have had such an omission since F8 :-o

Ubuntu :: Disabling Password Screen Or Choose Home Folder Encryption?

Nov 24, 2010

Two questions concerning the "insert your password screen" that pops up after some minutes of inactivity: 1) How can I disable it, if I don't want it to pop up anymore? (maybe on startup, but not after inactivity) 2) If it is not disabled: During the installation of Ubuntu, it is asked whether the password chosen will be used only to unlock the screen or also to unencrypt the user's home folder. Supposing the user chose the former option, how can he currently go back and choose to also have encryption? Also: is this encryption good? Is encrypting the home folder enough to protect personal data from eventual laptop theft?

Before I upgrade to 10.4 It would be nice to find the best solution to this problem. I use a KVM switch that dont pass the EDID info from the screen to the OS. To solve this, that is, to get the correct screen resolution, i need to pass monitor and screen info to the OS at every startup. One way is to ad a script to /etc/gdm/init/default, or in KDE /etc/kde4/kdm/Xsetup.

If I press f2 or f12 it takes me to a screen with a tab named Boot menu and its written on it debian and every time I press enter on it it takes me back to this same screen...

I can not boot from cd or usb!

OpenSUSE Install :: Can't Increase Resolution Than At Least Stretch The Screen To Full Screen?

Aug 27, 2011

I recently upgraded my graphics card from a Geforce 7600GS to a Gefore 560Ti. And while most things are normal, during boot up my screen isn't "full screen" until X is started, after which everything else is fine. Essentially, all display, the grub menu, the splash screen, console text, etc, is within a box on the screen, with 2" on the left and right, and 1" top and bottom of empty blackness.

From what I understand, this is because the framebuffer is using the wrong resolution, but the maximum resolution that hwinfo --framebuffer returns is 1280x1024 (which I am already using "0x031a".) (My monitors is natively 1920x1080) Is it possible to do something about this? If not increase resolution than at least stretch the screen to full screen?

General :: Dell Studio 1535 Screen Resolution - System Won't Get Past The Loading Screen Anymore

Aug 4, 2010

Unfortunately my experience in the Unix* based world up to this point has only been using web servers and administrating them, no GUI experience of any kind so I am completely unfamiliar with the setup and entire usage of Xorg or any other Window manager at this point. The issue I am having is with the screen resolutions I am being allowed to chose for my Dell Studio 1535 running Fedora Core 13 and the KDE 4 desktop GUI, thus my issue since I am not really familiar with how to run a Unix* based GUI in the first place.

The basic information, if there is more needed just advise what and what command gathers that info (or what conf/log I should look into in order to find it). Laptop is a Dell Studio 1535 Video is the Mobile Intel GMA X3100 ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics. LCD interface is the LVDS.

So far it seems to give me modes for 1024x768 and on down, nothing above this. I believe I am supposed to use the radeon driver being that is the type of card it is but every time I change the xorg.conf file to use this instead of vesa the system wont get past the loading screen anymore upon reboot and nor can I seem to find a way to bring up a command line so I can hit up the Xorg.0.log to see what is wrong or change the xorg.conf file back to the original driver it had listed.

I am going to assume this is a missing driver or something else it hangs on but without being able to get access back to the system and having to rebuild it again (re-install via live CD) I am basically out of luck at this time. Sorry for the rather poor post but I do hope to receive some basic directions on where to go from here with this issue
