I am running Fedora 9 in virtual box on laptop. Want to set Fedora display size so that I will not have to scroll up or down or sideways to view screen contents. Have tried a couple of options such a resize box and change from full size but these do not help reduce size of Fedora display. Am wondering if it as something to do with the rectangular size of laptop monitor???

System won't retain 16:9 display size setting in YaST (SaX2). I'm using SuSE 11.1 (64 bit).
SaX2 settings as follows:
Monitor is Samsung Syncmaster XL2370-1 (digital). Resolution is set to 1920X1080 (1080p). Diagonal measurement set to 23 inches. Display size indicates 509 m.m. X 286 m.m. (20 3/8" X 11 1/2").
Aspect ratio is entered as 16:9, but after saving and restarting computer it keeps coming back as 16:10.
Samsung literature says 16:9, and measurements above confirm this.
So why does it keep going back to 16:10, and how can I get it to retain 16:9? (Same thing happens on another computer, also running SuSE 11.1, and with a second of these same monitors.)
What I mean is I'd like to watch stuff in its original size but with the rest of the screen black, the way it is in full screen view (but I don't want it zoomed). RealPlayer calls this option "theatre view". Is there a line I can put into terminal? I tried

and changing commenting in zoom=yes and changing it to zoom=no. Made no difference.

Where can I download respective drivers. Linux drivers coming with the mobo can't work. There is no driver for Linux on the CD coming with the display. Fonts becomes very large even selecting "8". The screen can't expand to the full size of the display.
I know that you can make it full screen, however it just makes the background OS's background black, and still provides a smaller display. Is it possible to make the guest OS's screen (or display) full size?

This is a Dell 19" flat screen monitor, and I've tried changing the display; no matter what resolution is selected, the windows all bleed past the screen.

After running an update this morning, my terminal comes up in the install default size. Using the preferences dialog, I cannot find the control to set the default width. Has it been removed? I hope I'm looking in the wrong place, but I have a chilling feeling that it's been dropped or perhaps just accidentally commented out.
View 2 Replies View RelatedSo I finally managed to get my Samba file server working () but now I have a question. On the server I have 4 folders, each being used for a certain topic. How would I set the folders as read only but not the contents, so that way remote users can read/write to the folder but can't delete or rename the folder itself? Also, if I restart the Linux box it will cease to show on the Windows Network unless I delete the Samba share and remake.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a 64 bit Ubuntu 9.10 workstation with two virtualized guest OSes using KVM/QEMU. Also both 64-bit. One is Fedora 12 the other is beta of Ubuntu 10.04.
The problem is that I would like to use a larger size display that is configured by default.
Both guest OSes have a maximum screen resolution of 1024x768. I would like to increase this to something like 1280x900 or 1440x900. The resolution of the host system is 1920x1080.
This configuration appears to be a result of the installation detecting the resolution being reported by the virtual screen during installation.
The only information I have found on the subject suggests modifying the xorg.conf file in the /etc/X11 directory. Neither guest system has this file.
I tried creating one by hand in the Fedora system and managed to render it completely unusable. Not a big deal as this is recently installed and can be reinstalled easily.
I have a Canoscan LiDE 30 scanner which works fine in Linux. I haven't used it in months, and never since moving from Jaunty x86_64 to Fedora 11 x86_64. This evening I suddenly need to scan two pages to send to someone via e-mail, and the recipient is desperate to receive them. Naturally, Xsane has decided this is the moment to screw me.
The problem: I cannot figure out how to tell Xsane that the page size is 8.5 11. It insists on scanning only the left side, 3.99 x 11. I cannot find a page size anywhere in any of the buttons.
In Preview I once got it to scan the entire page, but could not figure out how to save the image to file. Subsequently I have not been able to figure out how I did it. In any event, scanning from the small main window always scans 3.99 x 11. Adjusting the scan area manually in the Preview window allows me to change the size area in the small main window to 8.5 x 11, but when I then scan from the small main window it reverts to 3.99 x 11.
I have scanned the document a hundred times at least, each time trying different buttons, but nothing has succeeded in getting the full page.
I backed up about 19GB of my Web Server today compressed into a .tar.gz. I then split these files into 4300MB chunks (approx 4.2GB). I then used k3b to write 2 parts of the archive these to a Dual Layer DVD. The burn went fine but I cannot seem to mount said DVD. I tried the following;

I'm using LXDE on a HP510 Laptop, it's onboard graphics chipset is a: Intel Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller. I am not using an xorg.conf file, so the settings are just the default autodetect ones I assume. I've noticed it when scrolling in firefox, and can't seem to get it to do it when scrolling in other applications, but I haven't really used this laptop much since installing the Fedora 12 LXDE spin recently. I'm not sure what information to supply that will help you help me. Here is a screenshot to show what happens.
I dunno what the big black box is, its only visible on the screenshot. I had to bind a script to printscreen to get it to make a screenshot, so its probably something I need to do here to get rid of it?

I also can't get the touchpad scrolling to work. Or my external monitor without some issues. So I think I will be making an xorg.conf file at some point.
"screen tearing" whenever I scroll, watch flash videos, or any videos in general. I first noticed this in Fedora 14, and now I notice the same behaviour in Linux Mint.Does anyone know what might be causing this? My Graphics Card is: Nvidia Geforce GTX 280M (1GB) I'm using Nvidia proprietary drivers. Reading some forums I see that the problem might be related to Compiz. Here's my xorg.conf file (if needed);

FIRST thing i need to do is figure out why every webpage i open immediatly scrolls to the bottom. i can drag it up but it goes right back down. In the actual spreadsheet though, there are two sheets. The first is all the raw data which you can order by position (based on me watching the games, and the line-ups listed on the AFL websites), K: H ratio, state etc. The second is a sheet which you can use to compare players.
I find that sometimes it is easier for me to make decisions about which players to pick when the stats are more obvious, so if you are the same, you can use this sheet as well. Anyway, I hope you guys enjoy the spreadsheet and I'll update it after each round. Fixed, I had to change the file from .zip to .xlsx
In trying to install an update, I deleted all the programs from my Ubuntu 9.10. Now I can not get my pictures, documents and music from the computer. I tried booting from a Ubuntu Live CD but when I get to the folder of my documents it says "you do not have the permissions necessary to view the contents of "My_Folder"". I tired the nautilus command but that only lets me view the files and not copy them.

I discovered the Perl module Geo::Coder::US, which uses Census input (TIGERLine files) to create a Berkeley DB file, then reads said file to produce its own output. However, the output from Geo::Coder::US only provides latitude and longitude information.At the moment, my only interest is in popping the Berkeley DB file generated with the import script packaged with the Geo::Coder::US module. I'm trying to see what the contents of that DB file are, so I can determine if the information I'm after is even in there in the first place.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI already had ubuntu 32 bit version 9.10. but due to some tool compatibility reason I need even the 64 bit version 9.10. I dint want to delete 32 bit version so I wanted to install both on my system. I have windows vista as well.
So I booted with 64 bit version of Ubuntu, went on with the installation, until the point were it asks to choose the partition. 32 bit version had 16GB allocated and 10GB free. so I thought I will make new 8GB partition from the 10GB free space. So I selected the partition and clicked on change, and specified 8GB and ext4 format and mount point as "/". I clicked on continue and in a few seconds it popped up with an ERROR message, which I can't remember exactly, but it meant to say that it could not make the changes as the disk to which the changes were made is in use. So I should not use it until I reboot. So I rebooted and now I have grub error : file not found and grub rescue> prompt.
I tried to boot with the 64 bit CD again with the option of trying ubuntu without making any changes and it does show the 16 GB partition, but when I mount that partition I do not see any folders in the partition except for a folder named "lost+found". I try to view the contents of this and it says I do not have the permissions.
I'm trying to view directly a partition with a damaged filesystem on it (NTFS) and so far the hex editors I tried do not do that. I tried GHex for example and it complained that /dev/sda is not a file. The partition is unmountable as NTFS however since it is damaged so I couldn't mount it first. Are there any hex editors out there that would allow me to view the contents directly and copy and paste stuff in there?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to fix this screen problem I continue to have (an example: in Evolution, its like my screen is too small to see everything, I have to scroll over down or over, then the window moves over and pulls me back to original spot. I've tried to change the screen resolution and that actually makes things worse. The screen problem is very irritating and I don't know why its happening. I've been using Ubuntu or Mint for years and have never had this problem.
Also, a similar problem but nowhere near as annoying: the sides of either side of screen are black. I can't get the monitor to be completely filled. I went to Intel's website and they have a few drivers compatible for linux (at least that is what they are saying).
