Feb 5, 2010I want to disable the XF86Search feature in my system. I will try anything.
One of my mouse buttons, when pressed, triggers this XF86Search no matter what I disable or change. (This feature opens up my browser and goes to a search page.) Strangely the mouse button is being interpreted as a key, not a mouse-button press. (This actually may be a bug in Ubuntu...)
How do I disable this feature?
I am running KDE 4.3.5 with Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic (Kubuntu). Though I use BTNX to configure my mouse buttons, this feature has absolutely nothing to do with that. I have tested by disabling BTNX completely and clicking this special button on my mouse still loads a search page.

Ubuntu :: Disable Tilde Key Press-twice Feature
Aug 7, 2010I have noticed quite often that the tilde key only works when I press it twice. I've searched a while and found out that it can be used for accented characters like with the n (can't do that on Windows here anyway). I only know of the tilde-n from Spanish, I've never seen all of the other tilde-characters. And I do not need any of then ever. But I do need to type in my home directory (~) quite often and I want that to work the first time I press that key. Especially when it works through a PuTTY/SSH shell from Windows, but not directly in Gnome Terminal. The system preferences for the keyboard mapping don't help me out.
So how can I disable that double-press feature for the tilde key? It's allright for the accent keys, the � and ` accents alone are invalid characters and should never be used anyway (there's real quotation characters for that) (except for shell backtick expressions) and I don't need the ^ symbol (for coding only) often on Linux.Using Ubuntu 10.4 with German keyboard mapping (de), directly at the machine or via NX/VNC.

Jul 4, 2011For instance, the one thing I hated more than anything, was the touch-pad on here, and I mean whenever you touched it it counted as a mouse click. I always hated it and in Windows I found a way to disable it with disabling the entire mouse pad, how do I do the same in Ubuntu? In every other distribution I didn't have to worry about it, but I suppose that I'm using the proprietary drivers or something.

Jun 16, 2010I am building a live USB key using Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic. No upgrades have been applied. It is as it came in the ISO that was distributed.I would like to create a smooth start-up/logout process where no messages pop up (even briefly) that might confuse someone who is not very tech savvy. I'm referring to the messages that show up right before the login screen during start-up (between usplash and xsplash I think) that say:
"Starting early crypto disks ..."
and also the messages that show up on a black screen right after you initiate logout. It seems to sometimes show system messages including some error messages that can confuse users.Does anyone know of a way to hide, redirect, or disable these messages? I just don't want cryptic messages popping up even briefly that are going to confuse casual users. I'm stuck with version 9.10 since I've made some custom mods and would rather not redo them for a new release.

Sep 1, 2010i have an hp pavilion dv7 and am using f13 64bit. my laptop has a built in woofer underneath that i have never been able to get to work. after the latest kernel update today my laptop now has woofer sound. there must be some new support for my laptops audio card. the problem is that it is a little overbearing. how can i a) disable this feature b) tweak the parameters like crossover frequency or gain? edit: i checked the changelog for 2.6.34 and couldn't find any info on any new audio support features.

I use my PC strictly at home, and have no security issues. I've set my username to no-password so that I just click [twice] to log back on. But I must do that to see the screen display - say to see what's playing on Pandora.
Can I set the auto-logout-time somewhere or disable the function?

Does anyone know how to disable this feature? I actually find it highly annoying, as I tend to place the mouse in that region either on accident or unintentionally, especially when accessing my machine remotely via VNC. I've had a lot of trouble googling for combinations of "Gnome expose" and "Gnome desktop expose", I have a feeling I am calling this feature by the wrong name. how to do this myself - install the Compiz Configuration Settings Manager (the package name is "ccsm") and disable the "Scale" plugin.

Mar 9, 2010Does anyone know what happened to the Multiseat feature that had been in the feature list at one point?To briefly summarise, a single machine with multiple graphics cards, sound cards, keyboards & mice provides multiple seats for users. Each user gets their own monitor, keyboard, mouse & perhaps audio. The rest of the machine resources are then shared.
The last I saw on the topic was this discussion, although I have a recollection that there was going to be support in a newer version of X.Org. I've googled around quite a bit, but can't seem to find anything.
Anybody know anything? It would be a great feature to have and it's frustrating to have had such an omission since F8 :-o

Feb 3, 2010I used a Karmic Live CD to make a forensic image off of a older Windows computer that has a fat32 drive. Immediately after booting it said it was correcting a problem on the drive, I assume that it was running fsck on it. I want to customize my own live CD to not do this. Though I suppose it doesn't do it for ntfs since there isn't a fsck for it yet.

Example:
I ssh somewhere if I work here ls or more huge text file then I can easy have x=100 or even 1000 lines. it's possible to scroll up and down in the window to se text etc. Then I start screen cmd... then I only have that amount of screen hight and width of the original screen visible from the first window when I started the screen function. How do one configure so that it is possible to scroll indefinite if I for instance do a more command on a text file with some 1000 lines?

Yes, I want GRUB to see it, so I can chose, but I would love to have it completely ignored once I load Ubuntu even for intruders. I did not like being able to just click my Windows partition thinking of the brutal things that could be done to it since it's not even booted.I am aware I can make a second user who has admin privileges, but that is similar to my other question...

Dec 26, 2010On my Samsung netbook, I have successfully got a pretty speedy dual-boot of Windows 7 Starter and Ubuntu 10.10
I set up Burg, to well, replace Grub2 in favour of a more attractive interface and so far so good. I know that I can hide the older Ubuntu kernels/recovery slots by pressing the 'F'key. However, the Windows recovery partition still shows up. So it looks like this:
Ubuntu - Windows 7 - Windows Recovery (vista)
Basically, how can I hide the Windows Recovery partition? If I ever do need to use it, I can access it alternatively by pressing F4 at boot.

May 18, 2010I want to set up my USB memory stick(s) (4gb) so that I have a partition (3gb?) for personal data storage and another hidden (1gb?) for booting/installing Ubuntu live from the 'stick' on friends' and colleagues' computers.I have a number of queries:
1) If I flag the boot partition 'hidden' in Gparted, it does what I want in Ubuntu but not in Windows; in Windows you can see the hidden partition, 'Wubi', and not the storage one. Does it simply depend on the physical position of the partitions on the memory stick?
2) I am using Unetbootin and Gparted (both GUIs). Should I prepare the live boot partition before or after partitioning the memory stick?
3) How much memory should I allow for the live boot partition?
4) Is there anyone who has asked similar questions or tried to achieve the same results before? Please let me know if I'm doing it all wrong.

Make Windows (ANY variant) the default Grub2 menu option.
Description: This sets Windows as the default boot option, and (with NO user action) the PC will auto-launch Windows on startup.
STEPS:
A. sudo update-grub #List your current menu items
B. Edit setup file
sudo gedit /etc/default/grub
GRUB_DEFAULT=”Windows 7 (loader) on /dev/sda1″ #Set the boot default to your Windows boot partition
[WARNING: Just setting 'GRUB_DEFAULT=n', will NOT work after kernel updates, etc.
Save the file and close.]
sudo update-grub
Question: I must have done something wrong, for update-grub (as root) now gives this: "/usr/sbin/grub-mkconfig: 6: /etc/default/grub: 2: not found"
What should I do now to make grub as it was in the beginning?

Jun 7, 2011I have my home network set up like so. My router has 4 ethernet ports so I have 1 hooked up to a network hub where I have 2 computers running windows xp and 1 running windows 95, on my other router port I have a desktop using ubuntu 11.04 and I have 2 windows 7 laptops and 1 ubuntu 11.04 laptop connecting wirelessly. All of the computers can see each other in my network map except for the ones running ubuntu. I can successfully ping every computer on my network from every computer without fail (even the ubuntu ones). The weird thing is that my ubuntu computers can see and use files from all of my windows computers but still nothing can see the ubuntu computers. I have set up samba to no avail and when I open file sharing and try to enable it on ubuntu it comes up with "this feature cannot be enabled because the required packages are not installed on your system." I have done clean installs of ubuntu 11.04 and 10.10 on both ubuntu computers and kept them up to date but the same problem persists. I have tried to do the same steps above with all of my computers wired but still nothing.

May 12, 2010I've recently installed ubuntu 10.04 on a machine with MS Vista. Initially, I decided to use a fat32 partition (mounted at /windows) for storage of files used by both Ubuntu and Vista. Then, I saw that Ubuntu can read/write on NTFS partitions, so I deleted my fat32 disk space.
Now, Ubuntu tries to mount that partition and during the boot of the Gnome environment, it says that /windows cannot be mounted. If I press S (skip), the desktop can be loaded normally but I would like to delete all references to that partition.
