Come back again tomorrow and turn on the machine and open the terminal, but up and down arrows won't bring any old commands that I used today.

General :: Command Prompt Ftp To Ftp Server Running On Windows?

Dec 27, 2010

I am using on Windows Vista, Filezilla server. I have it set up to be accessed via outside IPs and when I use a client on the IP I have it connects normally using Filezilla client. On the same machine I have Ubuntu running in a virtual box and when using filezilla client in there it works fine. Now I want to try the command prompt. So I do the ftp xxx.xxx.xx.xxI enter the name and password and i get the ftp command prompt, but the commands are not working properly. when trying "ls" or "cd" these commands do not work. "cd" tells me that the current directory is "/" root, but this does not make sense in the windows operating system. Now the filezilla client is taking the user in the application window directly to the root folder of the permitted filespace granted to that user. How can the same be done from the command prompt, if there is a way? It is as if the command prompt takes me to the root which does not exist or even have correct permissions to move in. Is there any way to be taken to the correct directory directly, or move there especially when the slashes are the wrong way around etc?

General :: SSH Client And Command Prompt Replacements Windows Look-and-feel?

Jun 9, 2010

I've worked exclusively in Windows. I can handle that.I've worked exclusively in DOS (a long time ago!). I can handle that.I've worked exclusively in Unix.I can handle that.Right now, I am developing a command-line (python) application on a Windows machine, testing it in a DOS box (i.e. Windows' Command prompt), and then deploying it to Linux, and running it with PuTTY.

I cannot handle that. My productivity drops dramatically when CTRL-C cuts in one window (Windows) and kills the process in another (DOS, Linux). My productivity drops dramatically when Enter copies the selection in one window (DOS), and deletes the selection in another (Windows), and runs the current half-edited command in the third (PuTTY).My productivity drops dramatically when I cannot hit Undo, Home or End.The Solution I am Seeking

An SSH/Bash command-line client that runs on Windows and, to the extent possible, uses all the standard Windows shortcuts (Cut, Copy, Paste, Undo, Home, End, Insert, Shift-Arrows, etc.) work on a bash command line. Bonus points if it puts the cursor between letters, rather than on them.Plus, an equivalent DOS command-line drop-in that runs on Windows, and provides the same interface.need to be special buttons to actually transfer CTRL codes (like CTRL-C) through in the cases I need them.I suspect the SSH client will need to be specific to a shell (so it knows when it is at the command prompt, and when it is inside a running app.)I know there are many SSH clients, but I am looking for advice for a particular need.PuTTY feels like an escape route for Unix programmers stuck on Windows. I am the opposite. Can anyone recommend one (or maybe a combination of an SSH client and an Command-Line replacement)?

Update: After seeing the early answers here, I turned my requirements into a blog article, which may give more background in the direction I am looking.

General :: Windows Command Prompt Auto-completion With Forward Slashes?

Jul 26, 2011

I switch between Linux and Windows quite a lot and it's annoying the hell out of me that the Windows command prompt won't auto-complete directory paths when I press Tab if I use forward slashes like in Linux. For example, if I'm trying to navigate to a directory 'bin':

cd /path/to/dir/b <tab> - this won't auto-complete to 'bin'
cd path odir <tab> - this will auto-complete.

Can I tell the Command Prompt to use forward slashes instead?

Fedora :: Multiseat Feature That Had Been In The Feature List At One Point?

Mar 9, 2010

Does anyone know what happened to the Multiseat feature that had been in the feature list at one point? To briefly summarise, a single machine with multiple graphics cards, sound cards, keyboards & mice provides multiple seats for users. Each user gets their own monitor, keyboard, mouse & perhaps audio. The rest of the machine resources are then shared.

The last I saw on the topic was this discussion, although I have a recollection that there was going to be support in a newer version of X.Org. I've googled around quite a bit, but can't seem to find anything.

Anybody know anything? It would be a great feature to have and it's frustrating to have had such an omission since F8 :-o

Ubuntu :: Turn Off Live CD Feature To Check Windows Drive?

Feb 3, 2010

I used a Karmic Live CD to make a forensic image off of a older Windows computer that has a fat32 drive. Immediately after booting it said it was correcting a problem on the drive, I assume that it was running fsck on it. I want to customize my own live CD to not do this. Though I suppose it doesn't do it for ntfs since there isn't a fsck for it yet.

Ubuntu :: Networking Windows 7/vista/xp / "this Feature Cannot Be Enabled Because The Required Packages Are Not Installed On Your System"?

Jun 7, 2011

I have my home network set up like so. My router has 4 ethernet ports so I have 1 hooked up to a network hub where I have 2 computers running windows xp and 1 running windows 95, on my other router port I have a desktop using ubuntu 11.04 and I have 2 windows 7 laptops and 1 ubuntu 11.04 laptop connecting wirelessly. All of the computers can see each other in my network map except for the ones running ubuntu. I can successfully ping every computer on my network from every computer without fail (even the ubuntu ones). The weird thing is that my ubuntu computers can see and use files from all of my windows computers but still nothing can see the ubuntu computers. I have set up samba to no avail and when I open file sharing and try to enable it on ubuntu it comes up with "this feature cannot be enabled because the required packages are not installed on your system." I have done clean installs of ubuntu 11.04 and 10.10 on both ubuntu computers and kept them up to date but the same problem persists. I have tried to do the same steps above with all of my computers wired but still nothing.

Ubuntu :: Boot Windows From Grub Rescue Prompt?

May 13, 2010

i have dual booted ubuntu with windows. but after a few days i realized that ubuntu was too slow for my system and then decided to uninstall it and planned on installing it later. So i deleted the partitions on which ubuntu was installed. I rebooted the system and the grub rescue promt appeared, i already knew the work around was to restore the windows MBR using the live cd i used to install ubuntu or the Windows installer. But the main problem is my DVD suddenly stopped working . So my question is, can i boot windows using the promt? is there any commands? or can i uninstall grub using the rescue promt?

My desktop has been down for more that two weeks

Ubuntu version: 10.04

I was wondering is there any way to add additional, alternative key binding to a particular feature in compiz? I am using Wall plugin and on my ThinkPad it is convenient to switch between horizontal workspaces with media buttons for browser navigation. But there just two of them, so I have to use completely different combinations to switch between workspaces vertically and that would be good if I can also use similar kind of combination to switch horizontally as well in addition to those media buttons. Is there a way maybe to send a message to the compiz to execute particular command?

General :: How Is Shell History Specific To Each Tty

Apr 4, 2010

How is shell history specific to each tty? I can't see anything in the history files that would indicate which tty a command was performed on, however if I restart and log in on several ttys, the command order and history is preserved on each. How is this accomplished? This goes for zsh and bash equally. Now for some zsh specific questions.I had a saved webpae, which resulted in a file called doku.php.htm, and a directory called doku.php_files - I could only get zsh to expand the directory. It didnt seem to give me the option to cycle nor did it only complete as much as it could with ambiguity, i.e. to doku.php , so what is this behaviour and where can I read about it?

Secondly I would like to know why zsh interactive shells do not expand the PS1 prompt completely. Whenever I open an xterm or such, the prompt is not the normal PS1 prompt. I read through the manuals and config files, and could see nowhere that staed a different prompt should be used depending on the shell type. Why does this happen, and how can I modify this behavior?Regarding modules, if I install the compat-wifi modules which I assume replace the existing ones, how would I uninstall them? Would I just reinstall the normal kernel modules over them?
