May 12, 2010I downloaded a movie using torrent in ubuntu 10.04. After completion when I played that movie in totem or VLC its showing use windows media player. How can I play the movie in ubuntu-linux.

Jan 16, 2011I recently installed fedora on my laptop and after update and everything else, I played an avi file by totem media player but it asked for Divx MPEG-4 Version 5 decoder and when I searched, it asked for GStreamer FFmpeg-based plug-ins to install. When I tried to install these plugins it pops out a menu that says All packages are already installed. This happens for mp4 and flv formats too.

I thought I have everything what I installed last time with F14 but I can't play my movies in Kaffeine. I have rmpfusion and the packages gstreamer-plugins-bad-free gstreamer-ffmpeg gstreamer-plugins-bad gstreamer-plugins-ugly, and all other gstreamer-* packages.

Aug 22, 2010now the totem movie player is not able to play the video files, not only video files it cannot play anything includeing mp3 songs. here are some screenshots when i tried to open the video files...

Aug 12, 2011I can't get my sisters Ubuntu to play some movies off DVD. I google searched for how to play dvds on ubuntu, and a site says basically "just install Totem" and the dvdlib3 (it already has dvdlib4 installed) so I went ahead and installed totem.I launched totem, but there is no option for opening a DVD, there's only Open File. which would mean I'd have to open the vob files, which are very confusing to navigate.
I tried VLC and VLC couldn't run it, so I tried VLC(Windows32 under Wine) and although it worked in the past, it couldn't read the movie either(the movie is Casino Royale and I watched it just fine on my Windows machineis there an easy method to just install some proprietary software that can play movies with a single click? like with the package manager perhaps? I couldn't figure anything out. It seems like Ubuntu should come pre-ready for DVDs and I don't understand why it isn't.

Jun 5, 2010My PPC iMac G3, 600 MHz, 768 MB ram machine (blue box) machine has 16 MB video ram and 256 MB backside L2 cache. When I insert a music CD, it doesn't seem to recognize it. Nor does an icon appear on the screen indicating that I loaded a disk. When I insert a movie, Lucid waits a moment, spins the disk, then ejects it after about 60 sec. Data disks act similarly, but no ejection. Disk spins momentarily, no icon appears on desktop, disk does not eject, No further action.

Apr 3, 2010I'm trying to get Totem to play VCD's. There are many complaints about this not working, but since they're all really old and dealing with different problems, it's hard to tell if this is an issue with me, or with the totem package. When I put a VCD in the computer, I expect it to pop up, (as it does) and prompt me to open the CD with Totem (which it does). When Totem tries to play it, though, it throws this error:
Code: An error occurred. Could not open location; you might not have permission to open the file.
Interestingly this is the same error I get when I try to play DVDs on a separate computer with the same ubuntu software. The CD plays, however. If I click ok, and go to:
Movie > Play Disk '<disk name>'
The problem is:
1) I want it to be automatic, without errors,
2) These VCD's have several tracks and after the first 30 second track, it stops. It won't play any other tracks.
I tried a few other pieces of software just to see if other things worked (as I'm looking for user friendly-ness, I doubt the others will be a final option):
VLC: (No apparent activity. Disk spins)
gxine: Autoplay input plugin 'VCD' failed: Check engine output for further details.
Mplayer: Error!: Failed to open vcd://2.
K3b seems to have no problem, but it's not really a media player...

Aug 13, 2010I have recently installed Lucid on an Acer Aspire 5570Z laptop. It has an Optiarc DVD RW AD-7530A DVD-RAM writer. I am having trouble in playing video/movies on DVD.
When I am inserting a movie DVD, the drive is working (i.e. is busy) continuously but the disc is not being recognized and mounted. Disc Utility is showing "No Media Detected".
The same DVD discs are playing OK in my desktop (running Hardy) and on another laptop (running Lucid).
However, that Audio and data CDs are playing/reading OK in the same drive. Even blank DVDs are being recognized and mounted OK.

When i open vlc or exaile and queue a list of tracks, after playing some hours, the sound hangs and in the music player repeats the same 1 second audio part like a hickup, in video programs like vlc also the film freezes.
i have the latest libraries of gstreamer from packman installed and i also tried updating the pulseaudio libraries from multimedia repo. but the problem is still the same
General :: Totem Playing Moved Media File - Location Not Found
May 24, 2010I am using ubuntu 8.04. I played an mp3 in totem & meanwhile moved that file to another location. Still I can move slider in totem to rewind or forward the song. Only after the song has been played completely I get message 'location not found'. Does that mean totem copies song into RAM so that it does not have to trouble hard disk for access during entire duration ?

Mar 3, 2010Have very recently installed OPEN S on my PC. The DVD player( why is it called TOTEM? ) won't work. It asks for some plugins without saying which ones exactly. Have tried to follow some links it suggested but to no avail (me being too bleeding brainless, I presume). Am sure that eventually will find out the solution but for the time being stuck and not able to watch some of Hollywood's greatest masterpieces on my machine.
