I am Dharmendra newbie to Ubuntu 10.04 OS and looking for how to install java (jdk1.6) on Ubuntu and also want to play the video and the problem is that i don't have an internet connect so is there any other way to get pacakages or plugins to install the above software reply me soon am waiting for that.
View 2 RepliesI can't get my sisters Ubuntu to play some movies off DVD. I google searched for how to play dvds on ubuntu, and a site says basically "just install Totem" and the dvdlib3 (it already has dvdlib4 installed) so I went ahead and installed totem.I launched totem, but there is no option for opening a DVD, there's only Open File. which would mean I'd have to open the vob files, which are very confusing to navigate.
I tried VLC and VLC couldn't run it, so I tried VLC(Windows32 under Wine) and although it worked in the past, it couldn't read the movie either(the movie is Casino Royale and I watched it just fine on my Windows machineis there an easy method to just install some proprietary software that can play movies with a single click? like with the package manager perhaps? I couldn't figure anything out. It seems like Ubuntu should come pre-ready for DVDs and I don't understand why it isn't.
My PPC iMac G3, 600 MHz, 768 MB ram machine (blue box) machine has 16 MB video ram and 256 MB backside L2 cache. When I insert a music CD, it doesn't seem to recognize it. Nor does an icon appear on the screen indicating that I loaded a disk. When I insert a movie, Lucid waits a moment, spins the disk, then ejects it after about 60 sec. Data disks act similarly, but no ejection. Disk spins momentarily, no icon appears on desktop, disk does not eject, No further action.

When I try to play certain video files with mplayer, there is no sound. As far as I can tell, it is only an issue with ac3 and dts sound tracks (using the ffmpeg decoder).Mplayer says:

I cannot play DivX Movies with my Totem-Plugin in Firefox. But it only doesn't work with my User-Account. When I log in as root, it works without a problem. I'm assuming that that the problem lies somewhere in a config file that is different between my user account and my root account. However I'm pretty new to Linux so I don't know where to search.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have recently installed Lucid on an Acer Aspire 5570Z laptop. It has an Optiarc DVD RW AD-7530A DVD-RAM writer. I am having trouble in playing video/movies on DVD.
When I am inserting a movie DVD, the drive is working (i.e. is busy) continuously but the disc is not being recognized and mounted. Disc Utility is showing "No Media Detected".
The same DVD discs are playing OK in my desktop (running Hardy) and on another laptop (running Lucid).
However, that Audio and data CDs are playing/reading OK in the same drive. Even blank DVDs are being recognized and mounted OK.
I just installed F15 new, and I wonder what packages do I need to install to play movies with restricted codecs? I thought I have everything what I installed last time with F14 but I can't play my movies in Kaffeine. I have rmpfusion and the packages gstreamer-plugins-bad-free gstreamer-ffmpeg gstreamer-plugins-bad gstreamer-plugins-ugly, and all other gstreamer-* packages.

I recently installed Ubuntu. I am trying to play yahoo pool in a java environment. It loads and I can play, but it wont let me type in the chat area. Ive tried firefox and chrome. I havent tried other yahoo games besides Pool but I'm sure its the same story.

I basically installed the jre-6u21-linux-i586.bin file in my home directory like and used all their commands like cd /home and all that. I believe the drivers that handles the connection to the database aren't installed. The format of my database is: *.accdb (was created on Win7 using Office 2010). I can't open this file, probably because I have no database programs installed?

How do I set the -server option correctly?
All day today, my laptop has been absurdly hot.The core temperatures were exceeding 70.0C even though it was on a cooling pad and I had disabled wireless, lowered the screen brightness, and put the CPU on Powersave. (For comparison, the temp usually stays at 45.0C if I do all this)
Finally, I decided to check htop, and I found IcedTea Plugin at the top with 99% CPU usage. This is used to run embedded Java applets (Java, not Javascript). Curiously, no Java applets were running at that time.Now skip ahead an hour to when I finally discover that the IcedTea Plugin was left over from earlier because it didn't stop running when it was supposed to. Looking online, I see several complaints about Java being very taxing on the CPU in Ubuntu, but I don't see anything about Java applets continuing to run after they're gone.
Can anyone who has Java installed confirm that this happens on their system?
1. Open htop. Search for "icedtea" to make sure it isn't already running. Then click on "CPU%" to sort the list.
2. Open this page in Firefox: www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml
3. Check htop. Is IcedTea climbing to the top? (if you have Java, it likely will, because this is a common issue)
4. Navigate off of the Java.com page by closing the tab or clicking Back.
5. Here's what I want to know. Check htop again. Is IcedTea still there?
6. Restart Firefox to get rid of IcedTea.
