May 20, 2011When PPS movies are played, I can't hear any sound. What must I do to correct this problem? I am using Ubuntu 11.04 on a netbook.

General :: Mplayer No Sound When Playing Some Movies?
Feb 27, 2010that's a bit of a strange problem, that somehow crept into my system. It used to work fine.Here is the problem as far as I can identify it. When I try to play certain video files with mplayer, there is no sound. As far as I can tell, it is only an issue with ac3 and dts sound tracks (using the ffmpeg decoder).Mplayer says:

Sep 9, 2010this problem is quiet enoying, so i hope that somebody can help me tracking down this problem and find a solution. When i open vlc or exaile and queue a list of tracks, after playing some hours, the sound hangs and in the music player repeats the same 1 second audio part like a hickup, in video programs like vlc also the film freezes.
i have the latest libraries of gstreamer from packman installed and i also tried updating the pulseaudio libraries from multimedia repo. but the problem is still the same
Ubuntu Multimedia :: Not Playing DVD Movies?
Aug 12, 2011I can't get my sisters Ubuntu to play some movies off DVD. I google searched for how to play dvds on ubuntu, and a site says basically "just install Totem" and the dvdlib3 (it already has dvdlib4 installed) so I went ahead and installed totem.I launched totem, but there is no option for opening a DVD, there's only Open File. which would mean I'd have to open the vob files, which are very confusing to navigate.
I tried VLC and VLC couldn't run it, so I tried VLC(Windows32 under Wine) and although it worked in the past, it couldn't read the movie either(the movie is Casino Royale and I watched it just fine on my Windows machineis there an easy method to just install some proprietary software that can play movies with a single click? like with the package manager perhaps? I couldn't figure anything out. It seems like Ubuntu should come pre-ready for DVDs and I don't understand why it isn't.

Jun 5, 2010My PPC iMac G3, 600 MHz, 768 MB ram machine (blue box) machine has 16 MB video ram and 256 MB backside L2 cache. When I insert a music CD, it doesn't seem to recognize it. Nor does an icon appear on the screen indicating that I loaded a disk. When I insert a movie, Lucid waits a moment, spins the disk, then ejects it after about 60 sec. Data disks act similarly, but no ejection. Disk spins momentarily, no icon appears on desktop, disk does not eject, No further action.

Feb 21, 2010This problem presented itself upon upgrading to ubuntu 9.10. Any time something affects the sound system the buzz goes away. If a song plays, no buzz. If I simply adjust or mute the volume, no buzz. But after 10 seconds of no sound related activity, the buzz returns. This is a very loud and aggravating buzz, most likely made worse by the fact that I run my sound through an amplifier.

Aug 13, 2010I have recently installed Lucid on an Acer Aspire 5570Z laptop. It has an Optiarc DVD RW AD-7530A DVD-RAM writer. I am having trouble in playing video/movies on DVD.
When I am inserting a movie DVD, the drive is working (i.e. is busy) continuously but the disc is not being recognized and mounted. Disc Utility is showing "No Media Detected".
The same DVD discs are playing OK in my desktop (running Hardy) and on another laptop (running Lucid).
However, that Audio and data CDs are playing/reading OK in the same drive. Even blank DVDs are being recognized and mounted OK.

May 1, 2010I found that Mike Oldfield "Tr3s Lunas" being played backward (from the end to begining) is an addictive, magic music. For this I used alsaplayer. Now I want to record these reversed music, not everyone player is able to play backward, how I can do that?
Now I am using some kind of a mutant ubuntu, say version between 9.10 an 10.04, with gnome desktop and alsa sound system.

Oct 22, 2010I have to recreate a new version of my old thread about my laptop Lenovo Thinkpad EDGE(13) sound trouble. At this point I simply have no clue and tired of trying to fix it. Well after reboot I have no sound in movies, only mp3 has sound, and I can play them via any player. Well to make my video have sound I have to always yast>sound> and manualy setup my Azalia(HDA intel) driver "Fix DMA pointer" to "0" value and my "Use single command to communicate with codecs" to "0" value also, then everything starts to work until next reboot. I don't know why the config is reseted always. I installed new kernel even in hope that my soundcard would work properly, but nothing changed. I reported a bug even, but dunno whether it will be fixed or not, now, if I can write my sound config manually and save it so it is not reseted or anything. Or maybe I can write a script that at autostart will write the desired config for my soundcard, just anything. I'm frustrated at this point, coding as I don't know bash, so I cant do it myself, I need code so I could make a script out of it.

If you select a different output device, it will work for another 1-5 minutes, but switching back to an already used up device will not play sound. Running 'sudo killall pulseaudio' resets everything and each output device works for another 1-5 minutes. This is on on 9.10.

Jan 30, 2011The sound stopped working on my Macbook Pro 1,1. It was working fine before, and I can't think of any changes I made that would make it stop working. I know it's not a hardware problem because the Apple sound plays when I turn on the computer. Everything is unmuted in ALSA Mixer. None of the hardware options in Sound Preferences produce sound. Plugging in headphones or speakers does not solve the problem. I'm using 10.10.One curiosity: Whenever I do something that would normally cause sound to play, the optical audio red light in the headphone jack turns on, but no sound plays.

Jan 26, 2011Had ubuntu 10.10, sound worked fine. wiped that, installed xubuntu 11.04, sound worked fine with banshee. had some stability issues, so i then installed xubuntu 10.10. now, on the fresh install, i only have sound from smplayer when playing videos. NO sound from banshee, vlc(videos or otherwise), parole, or exaile. neither when IEC959 is active no disabled.
here is a screenshot of alsamixer showing that volume is up, and un-muted. and the xfce4-mixer as well.however, the upper right panel indicator looks like a mute symbol, or at least a no volume symbol. ive tried removing, purging, then re-installing banshee multiple times. ive checked the other sound cards listed in xfce4-mixer; they are all un-muted (found this on a couple forums, fixed this problem for a few people, but not me!). What can I do?

Aug 15, 2011when I use mpd with pulseaudio, I get no sound but clients appear to be playing (ncmpcpp and gmpc). Other players such as vlc or mplayer work just fine.If I go under the mixer, I get "no application is currently playing or recording audio" under the "Applications" tab when playing through mpd. In contrast, when I'm using mplayer or vlc, both show up in that tab. It behaves as though pulse is simply not configured to work with mpd.

Jan 6, 2010When I start my computer, my comp is set to require password everytime I start the computer. I am using Karmic with all the latest updates. One day, from the Login Screen itself, I selected the Power icon at the bottom right and selected Shut Down. But, from next boot, the login drum sound wouldnt play and even the african sound that comes after logging in wouldn't play. The african sound problem was solved when I noticed that my sound was muted by the GDM on shutdown. However, the drum sound still does not come. I think the solution it to change the volume before logging in.
