Software :: Strigi Tracker And Beagle
Apr 13, 2010
I first installed strigi as part of nepomuk which came by default with my KDE 4 desktop. I noticed that nepomuk and virtuoso ended up consuming more than 1 GB of memory after a couple of hours, so I disabled it. I gave tracker a try, and after a couple of hours, it was using 300 mb. Left without options I installed the "under archiver" beagle. It has been running for many days keeping all my data indexed and up to date. The best part is that it uses mere 30 mb. The only change I did was enabling user_xattr on my file system, which as far as I know, doesn't affect tracker or strigi. Has anyone experienced this bizarre behavior with strigi or tracker? If so, is there a solution?

I have a problem with Transmission. After using it for over six months without a single problem, it suddenly stopped downloading. In the torrents that do no get downloaded, I get an error message Tracker responded: Unknown error (0) in the info window, tracker tab. But there are torrents with the same tracker that don'thave a problem and get downloaded fineThe logs don't give a clue about whats wrong either.I tried downloading those torrents with Vuze and I had the same problem. What could be wrong?

I am having trouble with beagle. I havent used it for a while (probably since the upgrade to karmic). I have found now that it does not provide any results for any of my files, specifically my pdf files (I am doing a PhD and it is easier to search for journal articles by the author/title than it is to find them on the file system with 100s of files all over the place, I wish I was more organised!).
Do I need to install a sepparate backend to index pdfs?
I had a look in the log files and for all my pdfs (and some others) I get something like this:
Code:
20100202 11:10:42.8736 15579 Beagle DEBUG: Delaying add of file:///home/philip/Desktop/PBR Stuff/Lee 1986.pdf until FSQ comes across it

I just installed Beagle and I have it indexing (by launching the indexer and checking its status via the terminal) but I can't figure out how to launch the actual searching GUI. I did some research online and found that this is done by clicking on the "search" icon under Applications > Accessories but there is not icon entitled Beagle nor search there? How do I access it?

I know this has been asked before, but in case there are some significant changes in this area with Ubuntu/Kubuntu 11.04, I ask. Are there any good search and indexing tools available preferably something that also look at the content of files? Something along the line of Beagle. Is it still possible to install Beagle?

I just upgrade to KDE 4.3 and it is great release, one problem I have found with it is that The Strigi Desktop File Indexer does not want to start. The error that I get is "Strigi service failed to initialize, most likely due to an installation problem.", does anyone here know if Strigi logs things like this and were? "We must plan for freedom, and not only for security, if for no other reason than only freedom can make security more secure."

I've installed KDE 4.6.2 (from Index of /repositories/KDE:/Release:/46/openSUSE_11.4) and I've noticed that Strigi fails to work. In my System Settings I have?message that Strigi haven't started, although it should (the checkbox to strart Srtigi is active). The process virtuoso-t is constantly suspended in the system.
OS: OpenSuse 11.4 64 bit. Some bugs are resolved in KDE 4.6.2 compared to 4.6.00, so I would like to stay with KDE 4.6.2.

The ?search engine thing 'strigi' is apparently slowing the computer down as it builds its index. The index is already up to about 2GB. This indexing has stared automatically after a new installation of Squeeze. The index is still being built a couple of days after the install. Assume the thing it's indexing is about 167 GB.
Should strigi be left to do its thing, or stopped? If so how?

I receive following error when trying to enable strigi. "strigi service failed to initialize, most likely due to installation problem" I have searched internet, obviously not good enough, and i have found nothing. Nothing that would work. i have tried installing openjdk-devel as suggested, soprano. And still nothing. I have same problems on both boxes running Fedora 12.

I just upgraded Kubuntu from 9.10 to 10.04. I had problems getting Nepomuk and Strigi to run on 9.10, but finally did. I was using the Soprano backend on that version. Now, it seems that Virtuoso is the new backend, Ok?
I enabled Nepomuk, and Strigi, but the setting dialog in "System Settings / Advanced / Nepomuk" says that Strigi cannot start, could be an installation problem. When I expand the system tray, I see that the strigi icon is listed, and says it's scanning.
Is the warning in the System Settings incorrect, or is Strigi really not working properly? How can I check the status from the command line, and / or restart the daemon so I can read any errors on startup.

I've had opensuse 11.2 for a long time and I've never seen this nepomuk thing run before. But all of a sudden on startup just now, I got a message that it was running. Why? What is this and should I be worried? Why have I never seen it before?

how one can use the nepomuk/strigi file indexing service. I started up dolphin, and typed the search string in the upper right corner, and clicked Search. The search result is a long list of files. The one I need is a PDF file. When I select this file, on the right hand side there is the following info: 'Is part of: 15.2 GiB Removable Media' which is clearly wrong, since this file resides in my home directory, which is on a 200 GiB partition. If I double-click this file to open in okular, I get an error message:
Code: Could not open nepomuksearch:/nepomuk_3A_2Fres_...... Reason: Please insert the removable medium "15.2 GiB Removable Media" to access this file I guess this is some old result from nepomuk's cache (in the meantime I have had to repartition my hard disk, and restore my home directory from a backup copy on an external hard drive - but this has been many months ago, so I would expect that nepomuk have had the time to recognize this)

Does anybody have strigi krunner plugin work as search-engine and not as lottery? Same goes with search desktop containment - when typing in few letters from the file name, it never founds the file, only displaying ca 10 random files based on content(i guess) instead.

Between Intrepid and Jaunty, the database schema for Tracker changed from QDBM to SQLite FTS. This caused corruption problems for many, the only solution to which (as far as I can tell) was to delete the contents of .cache/tracker. Unfortunately I have many thousands of file tags which I'm not willing to lose, so that isn't an option for me. So I've stuck with Intrepid, waiting for a solution to come along. It doesn't seem to have happened yet.
So ideally what I'm after is some way to convert my file-meta.db file to the current schema, or a way of exporting and then re-importing my tags. Failing that, a way of running Tracker 0.6.6 under more recent versions of Ubuntu would do.

I am trying to use Bittornado with iptables via Firestarter. Previously, I had no problems, but now I have started using Firestarter, traffic is blocked. AIUI, after selecting the .torrent file, the client (me) connects to the tracker. In Firestarter, I see that my IP is trying to connect to various ports, all of which are blocked.I assumed the problem was that because Firestarter has a restrictive outbound traffic policy, that I needed to add Bittornado to it. So in Bittornado, I selected the acceptable ports as 10000-10010 (randomized), and then in Firestarter for the outbound policy I allowed those same ports. The inbound traffic policy has no rules. All traffic is permitted and I have a direct connection to the Internet (no NAT). I do not understand why, if I have selected the permissible outbound ports in Firestarter, and also selected those same ports in Bittornado, why connections between my IP and the tracker are blocked?

If you install PacketTracker you see that fonts are awful. They are too big and enormous. I've been seeking for a decision of that and stack at a site (Russian blog).
And here is decision:
1) Code:
2) Open file
Code:
Code:
The only thing that I've noticed giving a trouble is the list of Filters in Simulation mode. (With black background there is black font) So you have to change your ubuntu theme to lighter one.

I've already encountered a couple bugs, and thought it would be nice to be able to report new ones there and/or comment on old ones. But their register button only leads to "Invalid OpenID transaction," and I think that's a bug, and I think I ought to report that over here since I obviously can't register or report it over there.

I'm playing a little bit with tracker, and I particularly like the feature that enables you to tag files. I was trying to see if there was a way to integrate it into Nautilus, and I stumbled upon this: [URL]. Which, of course, doesn't work for me! (Fedora 10). One thing to note is that they say to install python-nautilus, which I couldn't find, so I installed nautilus-python instead... just a different name for different distros or are they actually 2 different packages?

I have been using Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx for some time and I have some problems with Tracker (the searching tool):
1. It looks like it reindexes after every turning on a computer. It always starts at 0/55234 files.
2. It doesn't index e-mails in Evolution. I'm using IMAP, but all mail is marked for offline use. So it's on the harddisk. And it worked in older versions of Ubuntu.
3. GUI is totally different than the one which is shown on the website of Tracker [URL]. How is it possible? Is Ubuntu using some old version? Moreover the Czech translation is lost in Lucid. It was 100% translated in Karmic, and now it's completely English.

Similar to the way Deskbar can display Beagle results live, can it do the same for Tracker? I hate having to put open the Tracker window every time I have to do a search.
