Fedora :: Unable To Launch Beagle Search Tool

Apr 2, 2010

I just installed Beagle and I have it indexing (by launching the indexer and checking its status via the terminal) but I can't figure out how to launch the actual searching GUI. I did some research online and found that this is done by clicking on the "search" icon under Applications > Accessories but there is not icon entitled Beagle nor search there? How do I access it?

Ubuntu :: Search And Indexing - Installing Beagle/Good Replacements?

Jul 3, 2011

I know this has been asked before, but in case there are some significant changes in this area with Ubuntu/Kubuntu 11.04, I ask. Are there any good search and indexing tools available preferably something that also look at the content of files? Something along the line of Beagle. Is it still possible to install Beagle?

Ubuntu :: Add Menu Items To Search And Launch

May 30, 2010

I just loaded KNE 10.4 onto my Dell Mini and I'm trying to get it configured. Some apps that I have installed using Synaptic (Kpackage seems pretty useless, even aside from the fact that the package names are illegible) are not showing up in the Search and Launch, and I would also like to add an additional category and add some items to the favorites list at the top of the page.

Right clicking does not seem to provide any options to change what used to be the menus, and middle clicking puts strange little yellow boxes at the bottom of the screen. (I haven't figured out how to make those go away. What config files hold the data I want to update? Are they not under ~/.kde for some reason?

OpenSUSE :: 11.3 Search And Launch View - No Right-click Menu

Apr 4, 2011

I changed the kde desktop layout to Search and Launch on an 11.3 64-bit machine and lost the ability to bring up a right-click menu on the desktop, also tried it on an 11.3 32 bit machine and experienced the exact same thing how I can solve this even if it means reverting to the default layout? I suppose I could delete and re-create the user's /home but I'm wondering if there's a way to solve this without resorting to that On the one machine I've put 11.4 on so far it's using the search and launch layout with absolutely no problems at all and finding it very handy

the 11.4 machine I'm using this layout on actually logs onto the 11.3 64 bit machine I first had the problem with via nis and an nfs /home export For the user it's working fine under I set the search and launch layout from the 11.4 machine, the user I'm getting the problem with on the 64-bit machine (nis/nfs server) was set on the server itself. The 11.3 32 bit machine however, I disabled nis and nfs so that it would use local logons and /home only so it seems to be an issue with 11.3 itself and regardless of cpu architecture

General :: Command Line Search Tool

Apr 10, 2011

This is a bit of a long shot and I think the answer will be no but I thought I'd ask just in case. I have a number of tutorials in html but I want to be able to search for particular information in these files and display that information in the terminal rather than having to go through a browser. Apart from using grep which gives a pretty messy display or having to write a a specially Bash or python script, is there any command line tools that can provide such a function?

Software :: Desktop Search Tool For CentOS 5.6?

Jun 12, 2011

I am looking for a tool to index the files on my PC to allow full text search. I use recoll on Ubuntu and it does a great job. As I described in a previous post there does not seem to be an rpm package available for recoll on CentOS and I have not been able to build from source. So I tried beagle. In a nutshell the old version of beagle available for CentOS 5.6 does not do a good job of indexing pdf files. The newest version, tried on Linux Mint, does not do much better. And the beagle web site seems to be gone so I am not sure if it is an active product.

I have done some searching and most of what I find appear to be tools for indexing a web server. That is a bit of an overkill for my needs. I simply want to be able to search old email archives, OpenOffice documents, text and pdf files stored and accessed locally on the PC?

Slackware :: Powerful Indexed Search Tool

Jun 9, 2011

I am familiar with slackware's slocate. What slocate doesn't have is an option to limit returned results from specific users or groups. What's more I can't seem to find a gui/web frontend so that people without knowledge of cli can benefit from the slocate's indexed search. So I turn to you all, is there another tool, that supports per user/group searching and a web (preferably) frontend?(clarification) i think slocate returns results related to the user running the search (files that he owns as well as files that are owned by his primary and other groups). Is that correct? I basically want a search user (who will be a member of the several groups that our office is structured like) to get results by giving as search criteria not only the filename, but also the owner of the file and / or the group

Fedora Servers :: Unable To Launch Firefox From NIS Accounts

Dec 10, 2010

I have a problem concerning about launching Firefox from NIS accounts. But it works perfectly if is started on terminal by the the local root account.

I have several hosts that's connected to a NIS server. When I tried to launch Firefox from one of these hosts, I got no response (Case 1 below). Here are the scenarios:

Case 1 - Fail to launch Firefox as NIS user: I login as NIS user account on the host, then I tried to launch Firefox by typing "firefox" on the terminal. But then I got no response from the terminal (the web browser didn't appear on the screen).

Case 2 - Success to launch Firefox as root: I login as root on the host, then I tried to launch Firefox by typing "firefox" on the terminal. The browser has appeared on the screen.

Case 3 - Success to launch Firefox as NIS user: I login as NIS user account on the host, then from a terminal, I login as root (using "su"), then I tried to launch Firefox by typing "firefox" on the terminal as root. The browser has appeared on the screen. Then immediately, without closing the browser window, I opened a new terminal as NIS user, then I tried to launch Firefox by typing "firefox" on the terminal as NIS user.

Ubuntu :: Use Multiple Words / Terms (boolean AND) With Gnome Search Tool

May 27, 2010

I just want to search file names, not their content.

Using gnome-search-tool, if I search for "word1 word3" I can't find "word1 word2 word3.txt" but I do find it (and too many others) if I just search for "word1"

I would have thought a boolean AND search would just be automatic, but I guess not. I've already come across searchmonkey, but I'm not smart enough to figure out how to set it up to do this - i.e. I don't want to have to use regular expressions or be typing "*" all over the place.

P.S. I do use google desktop search, but I hate using it as the results are way too narrow to be of any use and haven't been able to figure out how to widen it.

P.P.S. I also found this: In terminal type gconf-editor and find gnome-search-tool in the Apps. Then look for the field quick_search_second_scan_excluded_paths and change the slash to nothing, i.e. delete the "/".

It worked for my ubuntu 10.04 pc, but not this one (ubuntu 9.1) - so I thought maybe there's another way...

Fedora Installation :: Apt-get Search Wget Saying Invalid Operation Search?

Apr 5, 2011

i guess this is an installation issue as i am newish to Linux and got a F14 laptop from a used/refurb store... Anyway it seem i have difficulty with getting GTK running or maybe it is WGET...?

i did manage to install apt-get and was able to run synaptics ... but now whenever i try to run synaptics it flashes the interface and crashes. i tried apt-get search wget and it says invalid operation search. i tried apt cache wget and get a crash box in the upper right corner... i tried apt-get gtk+extra-2.1.2-4.fc14 and it says invalid operation gtk...

All of which is frustrating my attempts to get the GTK interface to J working. Their script uses WGET which i also cannot get.

Ubuntu :: Beagle Not Indexing Filesystem?

Feb 4, 2010

I am having trouble with beagle. I havent used it for a while (probably since the upgrade to karmic). I have found now that it does not provide any results for any of my files, specifically my pdf files (I am doing a PhD and it is easier to search for journal articles by the author/title than it is to find them on the file system with 100s of files all over the place, I wish I was more organised!).

Do I need to install a sepparate backend to index pdfs?

I had a look in the log files and for all my pdfs (and some others) I get something like this:

Code:
20100202 11:10:42.8736 15579 Beagle DEBUG: Delaying add of file:///home/philip/Desktop/PBR Stuff/Lee 1986.pdf until FSQ comes across it

Software :: Strigi Tracker And Beagle

Apr 13, 2010

I first installed strigi as part of nepomuk which came by default with my KDE 4 desktop. I noticed that nepomuk and virtuoso ended up consuming more than 1 GB of memory after a couple of hours, so I disabled it. I gave tracker a try, and after a couple of hours, it was using 300 mb. Left without options I installed the "under archiver" beagle. It has been running for many days keeping all my data indexed and up to date. The best part is that it uses mere 30 mb. The only change I did was enabling user_xattr on my file system, which as far as I know, doesn't affect tracker or strigi. Has anyone experienced this bizarre behavior with strigi or tracker? If so, is there a solution?

When I select Xfce as the session I am receiving an error about: 'Unable to load failsafe session.'

xconfd is not running (D-Bus problem) or environment variable $XDG_CONFIG_DIRS is missing /etc or xcfe-session is not installed.

Before I go investing time to sort this out, is there a simple fix that people have used to correct the problem.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Launch A .sh From An Application Shortcut

Sep 1, 2010

I'm new here, but certainly not new to Linux. Some of you may recognise my screen handle from other forum groups. Sadly my other communities seem to be dying and this one is going strong so here I am! I'm sure there's something I'm doing incorrectly, but here's my scenario:

I have a pair of shell scripts that launch SSH sessions with different forwarded ports, and use them multiple times each day. I'd like to drag the shell script directly onto the top Ubuntu Bar where shortcuts go and be able to use it. Or, even better, put all of my frequently used shell scripts in a "drawer". I know that I used to be able to make a shortcut, and set its path to "gnome-terminal -e file://xx.sh" and the script would run in a new terminal window. When I try to do this, a terminal opens with an error dialog that reads "There was an error creating the child process for this terminal". Permissions?

Software :: Unable To Launch A .sh From A Drawer In Ubuntu?

General :: Unable To Launch Gnome-terminal?

Nov 3, 2010

I cannot launch gnome-terminal from the Applications -> System Tools -> Terminal menu. However a gnome-terminal process is created (I can see it in a terminal that I happened to have open) but it doesn't seem to actually run (I have several of these terminals in the ps list now but they haven't actually run as terminals and it's been at least 2 hrs). At first I thought they weren't running at all until I checked (it looked like the Starting Terminal message at the bottom of the gnome GUI ran abnormally long and then terminated so I thought at first that they weren't running at all).

Also it looks like my gnome session is clobbering the CPU: running at or over 80% of cpu time at times (it does change but mostly it is high). All I'm doing is minor web work + updating a file in Open Office - when I noticed this I got out of Open Office and that had no effect. So it looks like application software is running (this was launched from a terminal) but running from the menu seems to result in processes with low priority (that doesn't seem right though). This just started today and my system has been mostly running correctly for a year or so (last year I got an Acer 5532 on sale, wiped it and installed Fedora 11).
