May 9, 2011why does this process use 100% cpu. I have googled the process, and can't really see what it is doing.

OpenSUSE Install :: Kdeinit4/tracker-miner Hogs CPU For Ages After Login?
Mar 29, 2011My configuration is OpenSuSE 11.4/KDE4/32bit. I am noticing that for about 20 minutes (or more) after first login every time there is a process which takes 100% CPU for most of the time and, of course, slows everything down. The system monitor suggests it is the 'tracker-miner' process (whatever that is). Do I need the tracker-miner? What good does it do? Is there any way to stop it (not to start it)?

In the torrents that do no get downloaded, I get an error message Tracker responded: Unknown error (0) in the info window, tracker tab. But there are torrents with the same tracker that don'thave a problem and get downloaded fineThe logs don't give a clue about whats wrong either.I tried downloading those torrents with Vuze and I had the same problem. What could be wrong?

Sep 24, 2010I've noticed tracker-store burning CPU and thrashing disk when I login to a KDE session. I'm tempted to disable it by modifying /etc/xdg/autostart/tracker-store.desktop. But before I do that, what added value does it bring to the party? It seems like it's mainly involved with desktop indexing, which I never use (does anyone?).

If something else, like a find, runs Amarok starts skipping. There is also a skip when ever I un-pause play. I dont see anything in Amarok config to increase or use a memory cache.

Dec 14, 2010I just upgraded KDE on my openSuSE 11.2 installation. I have never had any problems doing this in the past, but this time, when I rebooted, I noticed that after a few seconds of idle time, my CPU usage goes sky high. I ran top in a console and noticed the culprit was xorg. I am using an NVIDIA card on an AMD64 3200+ with 1 gig of memory. KDE version is currently 4.5.85.
Like I said, I didn't have this problem until the last update. Any ideas as to what could be causing this?

Aug 13, 2010My memory usage keeps building up and up as time goes by, when it hits 100% it logs me out. I have a tad over 9 Gib in swap, that is how it was set up when I did auto install and let it do the partitions. I have 4Gib memory. When I first log in it shows about about 800+ MB being used and starts adding more from there. I can run applications for about 6-8 hours before it hits the 100% marker. At first I was blaming this on the video player, but when I put on a play list each song seems like it gets stuck in memory also adding about .02% per song to max memory.
This seems to pertain to each application I do. Uploaded with ImageShack.us. This pic shows my Computer setting and usage through system monitor and conky script. In another note, I never see my Swap partition being used at all. I am real green to linux and not sure if I was suppose to turn something on. In the partitioner it shows it being mounted and as swap.

Aug 3, 2011Recently I decided to install my first linux. I choose openSUSE. Installation went smooothly and everything seemed to work just fine. After few days i noticed that sometimes my screen blinks for some time. During this blinking everything is working very slow.Today when blinking started i decided to see CPU usage of specific processes and I noticed that during this strange behaviour Xorg CPU usage is about 40% or more, it seems odd to me because usually it is few %. I am wondering what is the cause of this behaviour and how can I do something about it.I am using KDE, my graphics card is Intel GMA 4500.

Apr 30, 2010I am have been noticing nearly 100% Usage by the NTFS driver. According to top the "mount.ntfs-3g" use up to 100% when I am accessing NTFS partitions (one 1 core I believe). My CPU is reasonably fast Intel E8400 3.0 ghz. I find it horrible that its stuck at nearly 100% just because I decide to heavy access the NTFS file systems.
I have been google online and have seen dozens of similar complaints. Most people haven't found a real solution. Is there really any good solution for this?
When I was running Windows XP, I never noticed anywhere near 100% usage when access the Hard drive heavily. Is the Linux NTFS drives just very bad in performance compared to the native Windows drives?

Mar 18, 2011However, I would like to ask if anyone else is experiencing Higher than normal CPU usage with openSuSE 11.4 PR?? My system, which is probably similar to others, increases the air flow with the fan on the CPU when it is working hard. Mine gets rather noisy. (don't have it on the floor, but right next to me) This fan speed increase has been lots more prevalent in the newest version of openSuSE.
Have also used 'top' and it looks like xorg is one of the biggest hogs. However, when I use VMware it goes into hyper drive a lot.

So how can i prohibit permanently that knetworkmanager uses the first one (wlan0)? putting in some place of suseconfigs a rmmod <driver>? where? /etc/sysconfig ??

I ave recently opted a centos 5 based VPS now when i try to install custom xbt tracker for Vbulletin included with vbitty mod , at the last step where i put ./make.sh after that ./xbt_tracker the SSH client say's bind failed: EADDRINUSE.
What does this command means i am new to Linux. Any idea how to solve it so that i can start the bittorrent tracker in my VPS. My centos version is:- CentOS release 5.4 (Final)
Server :: "free" Shows Far More Memory Usage Than Summing Up Application Usage?

The "free" command shows that 7019 MB of memory are actually in use by my system, but when summing up the actual usage (or even virtual usage like the example below) it doesn't add up - the sum is far less than what is reported by "free":

OpenSUSE :: Regular Xorg And Plasma-desktop CPU Usage Spikes
Nov 1, 2010I have this problem that Xorg CPU usage spikes to between %20-%40, a little more than once every second - constantly. When this happens, everything on the system slows down, video, scrolling through pages, etc. plasma-desktop does the same, at the same time as Xorg, though uses less CPU. Switching off Desktop effects makes no difference. The spikes starts just after KDE is up and running after boot. I'm running 11.3, KDE 4.4.4 release 3, 64bit on a desktop and 32bit on a laptop, both have the same problem. I have searched the internet, but cannot find anything related to this, please help!

Oct 23, 2010I am running an Opensuse 11.2 system as a backup file server. Several external hard drives are attached via USB and mounted during boot via the fstab file. Recently, I noticed the df command showed the root partition being >65% full, while the du command showed the same drive was only about 20% full. After much investigation, I discovered that some large directories had been created under the /media folder on the root partition that were hidden when the external drives were mounted as directories with the same names under /media. I could only see this when I rebooted with a live CD and mounted the suspect partition without the external drives mounted. Is there a way to examine whether a mounted partition has existing files "hidden" when a separate file system is mounted "on top of it"?

Feb 18, 2010We are switching from an uncapped 512kb line to a 4MB line at the office... One catch though. The 4MB line will only be linked to a 30GB account, without the option to top up. I therefore have been asked to put something in place to regulate what the staff download at work. Basically block movie, music and torrent downloads should be sufficient, but they would also like to have a list of where staff have been in case of abuse. I have tried OpenDNS in the past, but the guys took great delight in getting around this, and did it within minutes... I can't enter a proxy setting into their browsers, because they all have local admin rights on their Windows boxes and will just disable that. How do I do this on a server level, so that they can't get around this?
