This is a server, and Ubuntu server is installed. So it would seem to me that the "plymouth" package (graphical boot animation) should not even be used. Yet something (mountall) is trying to use it.
really wish to customize my GDM for ubuntu 11.4 but failed to do so.....therefore i decided to use alt. such as SLiM.....I could install it properly in virtualbox but when i went to do it on my real ubuntu 11.4 ......the screen stops at plymouth theme or goes blank after loading plymouth theme......then i read further more blogs and made changes and now even if i configure SLim the GDM starts no matter what i do .........
PS : I am new to ubuntu and dont have any knowledge about scripting programming and stuff....
I updated quite a lot - kernel, selinux policies, initscripts, glibc and a lot more - and after reboot one filesystem does not mount. It says:Command failed: Can not access device... and asks for password. This is: RAID -> LVM (mirrored) -> LUKS -> ext3. Similar filesystem (raid->lvm(not mirrored)->luks->ext3) mounts fine. Mounting the problematic system by hand works fine. During boot, the lvm blockdev is named by UUID in crypttab, and the name used in fstab.
Of course I removed it from fstab to boot now. I tried downgrading initscripts so far, will try others. What I also noticed is that the emergency shell (bash) complains about something, I'd need to write it down next time I reboot; also "lvs" fails when / is ro, but maybe that's normal, dunno.Googling for the error message brought something about cryptsetup, but I didn't upgrade it (there is no upgrade available), and all I gather from it is that the error message might really mean something else, like device is already mapped.
It is probably something related to lvm mirrors, maybe also to luks, though the only related package in the list is the kernel, maybe the module-init-tools. SELinux seems not to be the cause, booting with permissive has the same problem. What I wrote above, leads me to thinking that luks is trying to set up lvm mirrors in parallel as they have the same uuid, but a) later during boot the mapping name is not there b) I have no idea what reads crypttab

I have a XP/ubuntu 8.04 dual boot setup and I walked away from the PC for a minute and when I returned I had "SMART command failed error. Press f2 to resume" on-screen. I pressed f2 and it went to grub boot menu which gave error 16 and froze. I ran Ubuntu live cd which appears to freeze after selecting try without install(latest attempt appears to freeze on ubuntu logo loading up).
I ran Hiren CD miniXP but the My Computer doesn't recognize the disk nor does it appear in the disk management console. HDTune and a partition tool doesn't see the disk.I ran Hiren CD linux recovery but that loops with IO error. My latest attempt is running Ubuntu 10.04 Live cd which is appears to be loading, slowly at least.I have an external hard drive and usb stick ready to copy to. I also have my laptop. It will be greatly appreciated if someone can tell me how to get my files off the drive.

Keep getting alert notification box, with close button. But get no response from keyboard or mouse. So I can't get past it. It seems that you do not have the hardware required to run Unity. Please choose Ubuntu Classic at the login screen and you will be using the traditional environment. (Late model Dell, probably less than 2 years old.) But since I can't use the mouse to activate the close button, or use the keyboard (alt + x, or enter), I can't get past that point. Is there some control sequence I can use during boot startup and get to single user mode and modify something?

I'm trying to run a command or rather a shell script provided by a vendor that installs its products. The script is "installscape". After running the script, the command prompt returns, a window for installscape pops up but immediately closes. No other messages or notification is provided. This used to work on this machine, so I'm being told by the vendor that it's my OS install. Is there any way I can get more visibility into what's going on as I run this?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am using Slackware 13.1 on my Asus K40IN, I also use dual boot by LILO with Windows XP. In Windows XP I can reboot or shutdown by select Start -> Turn off Computer, or just physically push the power button, then the machine will shutdown. In my Slackware 13.1, I can physically push the power button, the machine show that it is switching to run level 0, and then it will power off. However, I can not turn it off or restart my machine by the command (run "halt" or "reboot" as root), it show identical things like when I physically push button, but when it turn to status "Restarting machine" or "Turning off machine", my computer hang there, it does not power off machine or restart it. Is there any one experienced this situation? What should I do to fix it?

I have Ubuntu 9.10 installed on my HP desktop, but I'm running an older version (8.10) on a live CD so I can at least get online to ask for some When I tried to log on earlier it went to a command prompt and said the 'file system check failed' and to run fsck manually. I entered 'sudo fsck' at the prompt and I selected "y" to fix all the bad inodes, when it was complete it told me to restart, I then entered 'sudo restart' at the prompt and it said 'sudo uuid unknown'. I have not installed anything recently and I'm not sure what to do.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a netbook with a 150GB hard drive in it. A while ago I dropped my netbook and it wouldn't boot. Had a "failed command: READ FPDMA QUEUED" error at startup. So naturally I went and reinstalled. Reinstalling worked fine and I had my computer back. What I didn't account for was the fact that anytime it lost power and didn't shut down properly, I'd get the same error. I can't seem to recover my data either. Can't get any live disks to mount the hard drive after this error but for some reason I can still reinstall Crunchbang (essentially debian). Now I know there are bad sectors or something because when I try to use the disk that came with the netbook with an image of Windows XP that writes to the entire hard drive it throws an error but linux will avoid this I suppose when installing.
Now all of this is to say, being a laptop, several times I have left it on overnight when I fall asleep working or have to run into to town and it'll die and then I lose all my data, rather irritating. What's causing this error? What can I do to prevent it besides getting a new hard drive? If I can't prevent it from happening in the future is there a way to recover the data off the hard drive? The default ubuntu plymouth theme looked like it was realy small and stretched and made it look weird. anyway i tried to fix that problem by installing another theme This theme now when i reboot my computer it is still small and stretched and the colours are not correct. View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm using Xubuntu 10.10, with 2.6.35-24-generic kernel. I'm 64-bit. If it helps at all, I'm using xorg-edgers, but that doesn't seem to mean anything here.My issue is that Plymouth is doing absolutely nothing on boot. I know this from using bootchart and seeing that Plymouth launches itself three times, but not seeing anything every boot. The only splash I do see is after I log in, the mouse thing, but that's XFCE.
So, how can I either remove Plymouth entirely, get it working, or find a better splash program? The reason why I ask how to get rid of Plymouth is because it may be entangled in some things that apt-get purge wouldn't fix.

These are the plymouth themes available.
I've tried to preview every themes (using this script [URL[....), but they're all the same, just three dots except for "details" and "tribar". I've tried to use one of those three dots theme too and yes the bootsplash is three dots.
I've opened /usr/share/plymouth/themes/spacefun/ and saw that it shouldn't be like that. It should be something with blue background and Debian logo.
I've used this Wiki page as reference: [URL] .... I'm using Jessie.

really hate the new default plymouth theme in Fedora since 11, as such I'd rather use either Solar or Spinfinity as the default plymouth themes, however F12 for some reason keeps ignoring me when I set the default theme.I downloaded all necessary packages for this and for some reason unknown to me when I boot the computer the default theme still appears, unless I switch to a VT (press F1) and then back to the plymouth boot (ESC) does it change to the theme I selected, be it Solar or Spinfinity. The symlink in /usr/share/plymouth/themes/default.plymouth is point to the right theme (i.e. /usr/share/plymouth/themes/spinfinity/spinfinity.plymouth), and yet it does not load at boot by default, do I have to remove the other "default" theme or what?
View 10 Replies View RelatedI have Fedora 12 x86_64 running the nvidia drivers from rpmfusion. I set them up using the howto's from rpmfusion and the good people here. I also run KDE as my desktop and try to keep gnome stuff to a minimum. Everything has been running fine, including the opening splash graphics.
I run updates today, and installed the update for KDE 4.3.4. The next time I booted, the startup animation ran, but hung once it finished. I know the system didn't totally crash because I was able to give it a three-finger salute and it rebooted. The next boot I set my startup parameters to disable the plymouth splash screen, and everything started up fine.
