Software :: Troubleshooting Methods Of Failed Command - Get More Visibility?
Oct 18, 2010
I'm trying to run a command or rather a shell script provided by a vendor that installs its products. The script is "installscape". After running the script, the command prompt returns, a window for installscape pops up but immediately closes. No other messages or notification is provided. This used to work on this machine, so I'm being told by the vendor that it's my OS install. Is there any way I can get more visibility into what's going on as I run this?
I work with python and I use emacs as my IDE tool. I have been running Debian Squeeze (6.0.9) for some time now with emacs 23.2.1 and ecb 2.32. I am able to access my python methods in the ecb-methods window with no problems. However I recently upgraded my desktop to Debian Wheezy (7.5) running emacs 23.4.1 and ecb 2.40 but I have lost access to the methods in the ecb-methods window. The window is just empty while the others (directories, sources and history) are all populated. I have a second laptop which I decided to upgrade to Debian Jessie, however Jessie recommends emacs 23.4.1 which is running with ecb 2.40 also. The result is the same as on Wheezy.
I have used the ecb menus and googled for a solution or even just a mention that such a problem exists but have come up with nothing. Either I have a unique situation here or am doing something really dumb.
I would like to upgrade to Wheezy or Jessie but I need access to methods in the ecb methods window. How to keep my upgrade and see the methods in the methods window of the ecb system ....
Are there any tricks/sites/methods to use the linux man command in a more convenient way? I love commands in terminal but for some strange reason I preferred to type man in firefox then in the terminal. The output is so long and I have to scroll forever to find what I need. Also the lack of example is a headache.
How would I demonstrate that the prior content of a memory resource that has been allocated to one user process is no longer visible when that memory resource is freed and reallocated to another user?
I am now venturing into the web development side of things and had a couple of questions:1 - How can one increase website visibility on a google search or in any search engine or just in general2- How can this be done the cheapest way possible.3 - Is there any decent tutorial available?
I need a script/tool/whatever to toggle visibility of a specified window. I'm using Ubuntu with GNOME and compiz. I found wmctrl which can maximize, minimize windows and so on, but it couldn't make a window "hidden". There is even a option for it, but it doesn't work (neither for me nor for this guy creating this manual: [URL]
So my question: Is there another way to toggle visibility of a window? Any tool for that or even any commands for a bash script?
so, last night i checked my e-mail, jumped on facebook for a minute and went to bed. i got up this morning and my computer seemed frozen; no mouse/keyboard, no network visibility.....nothing. the screen was just frozen. tried too ssh into it to reboot, but the network wasn't up on it. i had to hard reboot. NOW, it just reboots forever....and ever....and ever. i have a WinXP partition on there along with my F12 and that wont boot either. selecting a previous kernel does nothing either. it wont even boot off the F12 install DVD. just keeps rebooting. I've never had this happen to me. so, it seems like a hardware thing to me, but i dont know if its my mobo or the drive. i suspect a mobo issue as the drive still spins up and gets me to the grub menu.
10.04 with LXDE via Synaptic (not actually Lubuntu). I just noticed that in the dialog LDXE Main Menu / Preferences / Main Menu
- the LDXE Main Menu / System / Administration submenu is set as visible, but is actually HIDDEN
- the LDXE Main Menu / Applications / System Tools / Configuration Editor entry always remains VISIBLE, no matter if set as visible or hidden.
So it seems that visibility settings and actual visibility do not stay in synch. Is there a way to resync, either way, visibility settings and actual visibility? Or, which config file(s) may contain error?
The server is booting up properly and the system is running. When browsing web sites on the sever and they seem to run fine. But when you make requests to it, it seems to take a long time to process stuff. Such as large mysql request. Even to the point it freezes. It seems that if you make a request of some sort it just over loads. I have checked the logs and the most I can get from it that one of my wiki sites that seem to be getting nailed with spam bots trying to getting which is one of the databaes that where repaired could be slowing it down A LOT. Now I did find a couple databases that where marked as crashed and they have been repaired. I am not really sure what is causes the errors since the HD space is fine, ram is fine, internet connection is fine...So I am not familiar with diagnoses linux as much as I am with a windows pc. I am not real shell friendly. I am not good with the basic troubleshooting commands to try and identify the source of the problem to correct it. Could anyone point me the way...
Thanks in advance and I apologize for being a ra-tard on these. I should know this stuff more than I do running a server like this. It was created in 2006 and has been problem free since. Another thing, mass emailing isnt working either. It may be mysqld related. Sorry for the fragments and such. It also seems the SMTP isn't working properly as well suddenly.
Another error I been seeing:
PHP Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 16 bytesPHP Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 16 bytes some times I see this as a 32 or 64 bytes as well.
FTP Connection: It is also slow when making ftp connects. It is extremly slow but they finally do complete. It can be just a simple connection to display content. Slow.
I have to execute certain commands (like shutdown Tomcat) on several servers so I'm using a loop and ssh. I put the server's IP on a CSV file which I parse, execute the commands for each line and send the output to a file. The problem is that after processing one line the program stops execution. I wonder if someone could lend me a hand with this, I'm new in bash scripting and I ran out of ideas.
The CSV (servers.csv) file looks like this:
Code:
192.168.254.5:Server 1 192.168.254.6:Server 2 ...
And the script looks like this:
Code:
#!/bin/bash while IFS=: read ip name do sshpass -p "pass" ssh -o "StrictHostKeyChecking no" root@"$ip" 'sh <CATALINA_BASE>/bin/shutdown.sh' >> output.log done < servers.csv
I have had no problems connecting to any of my wireless networks in the past. Right now I am at a friend's house and can't get internet access with my laptop. I have entered the appropriate fields in /etc/network/interfaces (as I usually do)
I checked this info with the router's web interface and everything seems fit. The network does not have a password. I have tried adding "wpa-ssid belkin5g" and "wireless-ssid belkin54g", and neither one works (can't ping the router after bringing wlan0 down then back up). I have also tried connecting with DHCP instead of setting a static address.
I installed Gadmin-Samba and a eth1. Setup the info in gadmin for waht I could follow and then shared the bub folder in win7. Have direct cable between the 2 nics, they see each other, however Win 7 says "unidentified network" (with a bench) and no connection established. In Ubuntu Places/network folder it has "Windows Netork" folder, but its empty. What am I missing?
I have an internet connection with 512kbs speed. I have PCLinuxOS installed on my laptop. when I boot the machine through PCLinxOS, I am not able to connect to the internet.
I am not getting IP/DNS entries/Gateway by my ISP. Can anyone please help me in troubleshooting this ?
But when the same Internet connection is connected to another Windows XP machine. Its working fine.
I need a portable emacs to use for troubleshooting GNU/linux machines. A USB stick is the preferred medium as some of the computers I will work with may not have an optical drive.
Will I need separate versions for 32- and 64-bit systems?
Is there any other different new downloading methods on ubuntu besides torrents? I know newsgroup I used it on windows but anything for free? I've tried the free newsgroup server with sabnzbd but those are useless now since they don't work. I was reading about rss feed nzb downloading? how does that work?
No matter what I do, i cannot get port 3100 to open. This is for a new MMO i am CBT on. I know it works on windows because that is how I installed it and played. But I prefer being on Linux. Majority of all other MMOs work fine. Just this one has to have udp 3100 open.
The following is a rough output of all the methods I have tried with no success. As you can see I have done some extensive research first before posting here.
Now its become a lil bit of an obsession.
I cannot get the following command to work:
And yes I tried the "spaces" in different places thinking that was the prob. So i cannot see if 3100 is in the list or not
I eventually turned on the firewall "ufw enable" add the port there, and output:
Some references

Firewall stuff: [url]
I even manually went into the router and turned it on there.
I have just installed ubuntu 11.04. Now I have installed, from the language support, the bengali language. And now select input method as ibus. Now when I am going to ibus preference to select input method, it is not showing any language, except chinese, which was installed by default. I am using ubuntu 11.04X64 bit version
I switched to pure LXDE desktop in my Ubuntu and now my Keyboard Input Methods dialog doesn't show up. When I click on the menu item nothing happens. The Preferences menu item in the keyboard icon in the panel doesn't work either.
first of all: I am not sure, if this is the right forum, as I don't know, if it is Slackware-relatedm, or if it is a general thing affecting other distros with KDE, as well. If the latter is the case, please let me know, where to post this (Linux Software or Linux Desktop forum?). BTW, I am on Slackware64-13.1 (stable). Currently, I am trying to copy all my music CDs on a harddisk. I thought, this would be a very simple thing to do, but whatever I do I run into another issue.
This is a server, and Ubuntu server is installed. So it would seem to me that the "plymouth" package (graphical boot animation) should not even be used. Yet something (mountall) is trying to use it.
I have a really weird problem, when I play any ..... video, gnome crashes. I've tried other similar services, and everything works just fine. As soon any ..... video starts, gui crashes, audio actually keeps on going and I get some weird picture on screen that keeps on blinking. I've tried searching around for a similar problem, but couldn't find anything. I tried looking in /var/log/messages, and tried looking into dmesh, kerneloops...but no luck.
I got two computers with the exact same symptoms today: Both seem to be alive. They answer pings and they host virtual machines which are working. However, I cannot login via SSH. I get
$ ssh -v obelix OpenSSH_5.3p1 Debian-3ubuntu6, OpenSSL 0.9.8k 25 Mar 2009 debug1: Reading configuration data /home/mike/.ssh/config debug1: Applying options for obelix
[code]....
On the console I can switch the ttys and enter my login credentials. After that I see the GNU/Debian Linux welcome message an no prompt. The system seems to hang. I'm able to switch the tty again and login with the same result. (I tried that three times now and I start running out of ttys.) A search on the Internet suggested some ressoucre shortage. How could I release some resoucres than? How could I further investigate the situation before just trying a hard power off?
Due to the enormous quantity of flash plugin related problems, I decided to expand my tutorials and create this thread to provide support for flash issues (is getting really hard to follow all the flash related threads and provide a decent support)
Current available tutorials: Flash Optimization Flash Issues & Solutions
Firefox extensions:
When asking for support, please describe your problem in detail and provide the output of the following commands and instructions. This will make sure I will have a good understanding of your Firefox and Flash installations, so I don't need to guess what might be happening to your system:
1 - Flash Version
Type about:config in Firefox address bar, then type plugin.expose_full_path in the filter, then double-click the same item in the results to make it true. Then type about:plugins in the address bar, find Shockwave Flash, copy the corresponding Path and Version and paste here. it should look lie the image below:
2 - Firefox version and architecture
To find Firefox version and architecture, click "Help >> About Mozilla Firefox" in the menu. The info will be located at the bottom of the info dialog:
3 - System Info
Execute the following commands then copy the generated file, named firefox-report.txt from your Desktop and upload it here or paste the contents.
To execute those commands, select the entire content below, then go to "Applications >> Accessories >> Terminal" and click the terminal with the middle-mouse button.
I am trying to configure Apache on my server to work with ssl, but everytime I visit my site, I get the following message in my browser: SSL connection error. Unable to make a secure connection to the server. This may be a problem with the server, or it may be requiring a client authentication certificate that you don't have.
Error 107 (net::ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR): SSL protocol error. Just some background on the situation: I am using Ubuntu 10.04 desktop edition. I installed apache by installing zend server (it installed apache automatically). I then installed openssl. Non-https pages work fine on the site. I tried getting trial certificates from multiple certificate sites but nothing is working (same error). I was previously hosting my site on another server on which ssl worked just fine. I also tried using the key and crt file from that server, but I got the same error. The domain name and IP are still the same though. My SSLCertificateFile and SSLCertificateKeyFile are pointing to the correct directory and files.
Ever since installing ubuntu maverick meerkat, ive been having an issue with the sound control, whenever i turn the sound down below 24%, it cuts out completely, and it goes from relatively loud, to silent. Has anyone else had this problem? where should i start troubleshooting?
I've got a server that I've been trying to get Ubuntu Server 10.04.01 LTS installed and running on and I've gotten incredibly close to having it work, but the Network is still giving me issues. The installer went off without a hitch (once I fixed some optical drive issues) and it has actually detected the "Intel Corporation 82576 Gigabit Network Connection (rev 01)" Dual-port onboard NIC which shows up when I run lspci. I statically assigned an IP, Subnet, DNS Server and Gateway to eth0 and things looked good. ifconfig showed that it was "UP", and I could ping localhost, but if I tried to ping anything on the LAN it said "Destination Host Unreachable".
Here's the ifconfig and lspci (snippet)
======== ifconfig ======== eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:25:90:2d:26:98 inet addr:172.30.1.75 Bcast:172.30.3.255 Mask:255.255.252.0 UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1

My problem started only after I upgraded my hardware. I'll describe the problem and the changes that led to it.
Problem: I have to restart my computer a second time before my icon set and controls are shown properly. The first time I boot up, I get an ancient looking set of controls. (By controls, I mean buttons, window splitters, etc.). My custom icon set is replaced by an ancient looking icon set I've never seen in Ubuntu before. (Maybe it is a Debian default? It certainly isn't stock Ubuntu). The Gnome panels are completely different from normal too. I simply reboot again and everything comes up the way it should. Every time I start my computer, I have to restart a second time. After that, no problems until I need to shut it down and start again.
I'm running a relatively new installation of Ubuntu 10.10. I changed the theme to a bisigi theme [url] and everything was fine. No problems at all until...
Changes: Then I upgraded my video card from an older nVidia to a GT430. I had to change a couple things in xorg.conf. For that, I just used the suggestions made by the nVidia settings utility. I also upgraded my mobo and RAM (from 4GB to 16).
These problems started only after I upgraded my hardware. Of course, the hardware upgrade involved the above noted software configuration changes. (xorg.conf was the only required change.)
I'm looking for ideas on how to troubleshoot this? I don't even know the first step. For example, what logs should I check? Should I suspect a hardware problem (e.g., bad video card) or is this software/configuration related?
I have an oracle database that is getting file i/o errors. I don't think it is the fault of oracle, but the nfs mounted filesystems. So ... to troubleshoot my next step is to see if Linux is having trouble with i/o. These are nfs mounted and there are many files located on the filesystem which is having the error. The error only occurs on one file.Does anyone know how to turn on logging for any errors received? I assume I need need logging for nfs daemon, but not sure. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
