Ubuntu Installation :: The Screen Stops At Plymouth Theme Or Goes Blank After Loading Plymouth Theme?
Aug 3, 2011really wish to customize my GDM for ubuntu 11.4 but failed to do so.....therefore i decided to use alt. such as SLiM.....I could install it properly in virtualbox but when i went to do it on my real ubuntu 11.4 ......the screen stops at plymouth theme or goes blank after loading plymouth theme......then i read further more blogs and made changes and now even if i configure SLim the GDM starts no matter what i do .........
PS : I am new to ubuntu and dont have any knowledge about scripting programming and stuff....
General :: Tell If BIND/ DNS Is Running Properly?
Feb 25, 2011I've tried setting up BIND from a fresh install. I've followed a few tutorials (all seem to follow a similar routine), but it doesn't appear to work properly.

Debian :: Every Plymouth Themes Is Three Dots

These are the plymouth themes available.
I've tried to preview every themes (using this script [URL[....), but they're all the same, just three dots except for "details" and "tribar". I've tried to use one of those three dots theme too and yes the bootsplash is three dots.
I've opened /usr/share/plymouth/themes/spacefun/ and saw that it shouldn't be like that. It should be something with blue background and Debian logo.
I've used this Wiki page as reference: [URL] .... I'm using Jessie.

Jun 2, 2015I installed (debian-jessie-DI-rc3-amd64-DVD [testing]) on both my laptop and desktop. After I installed plymouth and some themes, on the laptop I entered into the terminal to steup and activate the theme like so:

It wouldn't load the plymouth theme. Now I installed (debian-jessie-8.0.0-amd64-DVD [stable]) only on the laptop so far, and used the same process as with (debian-jessie-DI-rc3-amd64-DVD [testing]) for installing plymouth and when it got to where it said it was missing firmware I fallowed the:

It loaded the firmware just fine. But after I...

...and then rebooted the system, the plymouth theme didn't load just like the desktop when I installed (debian-jessie-DI-rc3-amd64-DVD [testing]) on it. I looked at the /etc/plymouth/plymouthd.conf and it reads:

Oct 25, 2010I've been trying to setup Plymouth on Debian Squeeze, but have only been partially successful: Plymouth works with shutdown (i.e. I see Plymouth after I tell the computer to shut down), but not when I start up my computer (before it reaches GDM). In other words, Plymouth seems to work with my graphics, but for some reason does not show up at startup (not even briefly, as far as I can tell). I've searched the forums and followed this advice, as well as the instructions found here: [URL] but neither of those worked. I'm running Debian Testing (Squeeze) on a Thinkpad X41, which uses "Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller" for graphics.

Nov 12, 2015So, in all distributions that I test, I did not get working the Plymouth, if I try to fix, the system broke. Only me rest open the System with recovery mode and execute "chroot" and remove the changes.

And everything goes normally, with no errors, but when I reboot the system, GDM not start, leaving me with a black screen with the processes that system start. So how i cant fix that?

Jun 16, 2011I am new to linux... and I have Installed Debian as my default OS replacing Ubuntu.
I have Installed Plymouth:

# /usr/sbin/plymouth-set-default-theme --list
# /usr/sbin/plymouth-set-default-theme THEME
# update-initramfs -u
Plymouth does not work. What went wrong? or what more should I do to make it work.Also how do I install themes to plymouth, which are not there in the theme package? I have come across this theme I really like but it is in tar.gz and I am looking for some guidance from the forum to run tar.gz packages.

Jun 4, 2010My DVD/CD burner is rather old now (going on 5 years), and I've had some "quality" issues when I've been burning stuff for the past year.
CD's: When I play a burned CD in my car stereo, the songs have a "skipping" sound to them on the low-volume levels of the audio. I use K3b as my burning software, and it seems to be the best, but am I wrong? Is this a common problem?
DVD's: Specifically video DVD's. After converting the .avi to an image file using DeVeDe Creator, it gives me a file that has the .iso and I burn the disc using K3b. It's really hit or miss.
The question: is there a way to test the performance of my DVD burner to make sure it's working properly? Is there a way to calibrate the mechanism? I have a new External DVD/CD burner that supports "LiteScribe" (I could be mistaken on the name, but it's a technology that allows you to create a picture on the opposite side of the disc), but my INTERNAL is a 5 year old Lite-On.

Debian :: Running Same Process Multiple Times(from Another Account) / An Instance Of Newsbeuter Is Already Running Error?
Aug 6, 2010Sometimes I connect to my Debian box from another computer (using SSH on Cygwin or Linux), and once ina while I want to run some console apps. And sometimes some of these apps might complain about "another intance, Error: an instance of newsbeuter is already running (PID: 2496)". Is there a work around for this issue at all(without killing the original instance") ? The reason I do not want to kill the app because there might be 2 users connected to the same machine that might be using the same app.

Aug 31, 2015I wish installing MariaDB was as simple as installing MySQL. I purged MySQL and installed MariaDB instead. I ran mysql_secure_installation, and that ran fine, but for some reason, the password I set up doesn't seem to work. I've run mysql_secure_installation several times with no success.
However, running Code: Select allmysql -uroot when logged in as root or with sudo logs me in just fine, without even asking for my password. How do I set up a password for the MariaDB root user so that I don't need to be superuser to connect to MariaDB?

Mar 21, 2016I'm coming from Linux Mint 17.2, and just installed 8.3.0. Now I am at work and discovered that I can't use git to connect to our BitBucket repository (hosted on scm manager) Every action that involves communicating with the remote repo results in this error: fatal: unable to access 'https://<repo url>: gnutls_handshake() failed: The TLS connection was non-properly terminated.
I have been searching the web to find a solution and it seems the gnutls library is very picky. It does not seem to be possible to force git to use openssl instead without a manual compile. I could do that, but I don't want to since then I have a non-standard system and lose the automatic updates, and manage that manually. Could I somehow reconfigure Debian to use openssl over gnutls?

May 15, 2011My computer has been running well for a couple of years with Ubuntu and the Gnome desktop. I use a very cheap webcam from PCWorld PC Line 1.3 Mega Pixels with Cheese and Skype which worked on Ubuntu. The new Ubuntu Unity desktop seems most unintuitive and reading that Ubuntu may not include Gnome for the next release is my reason to make the change to Debian. I am aware Ubuntu is a Debian derivative.
I have installed Debian Squeeze and everything is working properly apart from the webcam. When I open Cheese the webcam works but very slowly although it will not capture video. When I open Cheese > Preferences, I see the Device listed as USB 2.0 Camera (/dev/video0) but greyed out. When I open Skype > Options > Video I see the same greyed out listing but no image appears in the test area.

Apr 29, 2010My probelem is with alsamixer. I can't record anything; nothing I play back hasany sound. I have alsamixer capture set on mix. I know I recordedin the past with this setting, so I don't know what is happening. I amrecording from the internet.When I adjust the volume on playback in either alsamixer or kmix thevolume settings change on the other as well. when I adjust thevolume setting in capture it doesn't affect each other.If I have Kmix > inpur > capture enabled I can record, but the playbackdoesn't sound good. I would like to figure what is wrong with alsamixer.

Aug 8, 2015I have Apache setup on localhost with a wiki, ethercalc, etherpad and kanboard.
Wiki is on port 80, in /var/www/html so when someone enters domain into browser it comes up, which is what I want. It comes up lightning fast.
Problem is how to properly direct to other ports i.e. 8000, 8002 and 9001 for other applications. All others are in /usr/share.
I tried creating directories with .htaccess for each in /var/www/html, but if they even come up (kanboard completely unreachable) they are super slow, drop connection and usually don't render completely.
I've read that if you have access to Apache configuration .htaccess is wrong way to go and for security reasons app files shouldn't be directly located in /var/www/html?

Mar 24, 2011i will try to keep this post short and to the point. i am currently running debian with kde and i am trying to edit /etc/apt/sources.list. i know that this file needs to be opened as root for the changes to it to be saved, so what im doing (in konsole) is:

root@debian: /home/concreteabstract# kwrite /etc/apt/sources.list
but that doesn't work, and the message i get is:
No protocol specified
kwrite: cannot connect to X server :0.0

Nov 10, 2014I recently reinstalled Wheezy on my laptop and after the install was finished I installed the brcmsmac driver, using the instructions on this wiki page: [URL]. I have the device BCM43224. I noticed though that this driver seems worse compared to the proprietary broadcom-sta I had on my previous installation and so I would like to switch. I know that there is a guide on how to install the proprietary drivers on the wiki ( [URL]), but it feels like i should remove the free driver before I install the proprietary one, and I dont know how to do this .
So my question is: what is the proper way of changing from the open brcmsmac driver to the proprietary broadcom-sta driver?

Mar 1, 2015I have an hp pavilion 15-b106ed with UEFI. I disabled secure boot and installed debian jessie form the CD1 iso (RC1 installer) burned to an USB key. Installation went smoothly, but after rebooting I get grub's terminal-like screen saying:
"GNU GRUB version 2.02 beta2-9ubuntu1. Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported... etc"
The problem is that as soon as I turn on the computer that grub screen shows up and I can't boot from USB anymore nor
access the BIOS settings, no matter how fast I press F9, F10 and such. I guess I have to tell him to boot from the USB using the grub terminal...
Debian Configuration :: Touchscreen Clicks Not Recognized Properly
Apr 1, 2014I've got a problem with touchscreen (NNK Switches 5.7" model: FT-CU04B). It is not supported under Linux, but I managed to get it working with usbtouchscreen module, after some modifications of course. It gets recognized by system now, it is possible to calibrate it correctly through xinput_calibrator but it isn't possible to "left click with it". I know that it's weird so I want to make myself clear - touchscreen recognizes touch - when touching button for example, it reacts with "going down" but when I'm releasing button, it "goes up" again, without action. I've tried mapping left mouse button with xinput set-button map 1 0 0 0 0 0, but without success, buttons remain "unclickable".
