Server :: Blocking Social Networking On The LAN?

Dec 23, 2010

I have a Debian server running at the gateway level on a LAN. This runs squid for creating block lists of websites - for eg. blocking social networking on the LAN. Also uses iptables.

I am able to do a lot of things with squid & iptables, but a few things seem difficult to achieve.

1) If I block http://www.facebook.com, people can still access https://www.facebook.com because squid doesn't go through https traffic by default. However, if the users set the gateway IP address as proxy on their web browser, then https is also blocked. So I can do one thing - using iptables drop all outgoing 443 traffic, so that people are forced to set proxy on their browser in order to browse any HTTPS traffic. However, is there a better solution for this.

2) As the number of blocked urls increase in squid, I am planning to integrate squidguard. However, the good squidguard lists are not free for commercial use. Anyone knows of a good squidguard list which is free.

3) Block yahoo messenger, gtalk etc. There are so many ports on which these Instant Messenger softwares work. You need to drop lots of outgoing ports in iptables. However, new ports get added, so you have to keep adding them. And even if your list of ports is current, people can still use the web version of gtalk etc.

4) Blocking P2P. Haven't been able to figure out how to do this till now.

Programming :: What Language Would You Write A Social Networking Site In?

Jan 8, 2010

I'm a full-time developer in my day-job, I get paid real money for it and everything! Nowadays I generally write web-based business apps using VB.net and ASPX.net, but I'v recently been asked to come up with a social networking type site (something in-between Facebook and twitter) that will initially be used for training purposes... don't ask or I'll have to send the men in the dodgie overcoats round

Problem is, it is to be written like real social-networking site, I've no idea what I'm going to make it look like and was, more fundamentally, wondering what to write it in?I've written commercial systems using Perl, PHP, ASP and the .net (VB and C) stuff.

Fedora Networking :: Recently "saw The Light" And Realized That Was Becoming A Buggy Overly-social Joke Of A Distro?

Dec 25, 2010

I recently "saw the light" and realized that ubuntu was becoming a buggy overly-social joke of a distro, and i found that fedora seemed to fix most of my issues with making my laptop run well.Samba was not one of them.Anyway, I installed samba, check. (I also installed the graphical utility). I checked off samba and the client in the firewall. check. I used the utility (system-config-samba?) to switch the workgroup over. check.it did not want to access my fileserver at first; it saw it but as soon as i tried to mount and open it, it timedout and gave me the "unable to mount location" "Failed to retrieve share list from server" error. the next day it worked perfectly. now it is back to not working. it also is not working on my main rig (but it has a faulty hard disk so it will be out for a while).

Slackware :: DVD Backup Software Suggestions

Jun 30, 2010

This isn't truly Slackware specific but I thought who would know better than the Slackware community. My issue is I am tired of being tech-support for my in-laws trying to keep their XP and Vista desktops functioning and would like to convert there setups to Linux. Their needs in terms of applications etc are very basic, primarily internet surfing and photos. The one application they use very frequently is a DVD backup software that runs on XP called DVD X Copy, and basically it is a one click rip and burn process for them to make backups of their DVD collection. I personally do not own and have not used such applications before so I am not familiar with some alternatives. I know of lots of programs that Rip or Burn DVD's very well but what I am looking for is a dead-simple way on Linux for them to maintain that functionality. Anything involving more than a couple steps would be challenging to them as they are very inexperienced PC users and slightly technophobic. I looked on Wine to see if the program would run under Wine but did not see it listed in the database.

Software :: Samba Suggestions On Group Permissions

Jan 14, 2009

I have a user community of about 2000 users and a samba server running on AIX that currently hosts a read-only share for the whole company.

[Released]
path = /mypath
guest ok = Yes

But now I have been requested to make this share available as read-only for some users and completely inaccessible to everyone else. The number of users who will have access is probably a few hundred and I expect users to be added/removed on a daily basis. Some of the users have unix logins, while others do not. Because of this, I hesitate to mess with user mapping because I would have to manage this every day, unless I do something with a script.

Can someone suggest a scheme I can use to deny everyone except for certain users without having to use user mapping?Someone here in my office suggested we use hosts allow or deny, since the users who will still have access are located on the same subnet. However, there is a distinct possibility that a small number of people on a few other subnets will need access. Is there a way I can specify hosts allow but still allow specific users from other subnets?Forgive me if this question has been asked before. I'm sure it must have been, but I am having trouble doing a search of the archives that will give me advice about this particular problem.

Security :: Attackers Moving To Social Networks For Command And Control

Jul 20, 2010

Bot herders and the crimeware gangs behind banker Trojans have had a lot of success in the last few years with using bulletproof hosting providers as their main base of operations. But more and more, they're finding that social networks such as Twitter and Facebook are offering even more fertile and convenient grounds for controlling their malicious creations.New research from RSA shows that the gangs behind some of the targeted banker Trojans that are such a huge problem in some countries, especially Brazil and other South American nations, are moving quietly and quickly to using social networks as the command-and-control mechanisms for their malware. The company's anti-fraud researchers recently stumbled upon one such attack in progress and watched as it unfolded.

Software :: Apps And Suggestions For Press Quality Projects

Sep 19, 2010

Because of my background with computers, my current employer decided to throw me into a project designing some advertisements and pages in our store's catalog. This was my first time doing anything like this. They gave me QuarkXpress and I learned as I went. Since I use Linux, I would much rather use Linux to do this type of work in the future. I have downloaded Scribus and ICC profiles (color profiles). The press we went with uses CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow & Black) for primary colors. Is there anyone who has done professional printing or design that went to press in CMYK (or anything) that has suggestions for doing this type of work in Linux?

OpenSUSE :: Difference Between Core, Community And Playground?

Feb 17, 2010

I've been thinking of going into opensuse for a long time and now with KDE 4.4 is finally out - I'm going to do it. The installation shouldn't be a problem but I wonder how I can upgrade to kde 4.4, since opensuse 11.2 will have 4.3 by default? I saw in the documentation to add these repos:

# Core packages: http://download.opensuse.org/reposit.../openSUSE_11.2
# Community: Index of /repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Community/openSUSE_11.2_KDE4_Factory_Desktop
# Playground: Index of /repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Playground/openSUSE_11.2_KDE4_Factory_Desktop

whats the difference between core, community and playground? And isnt there "stable" repos for the KDE 4.4 release? And are there a repo with amarok 2.3 Beta?
