View 2 RepliesI downloaded a file enclosed in 58 rar parts and extracted them. I was looking for a way which would enable autodelete of all rar-archives after the extraction so I don't have to clean the mess up later. I hear there is some option in command line arguments but that doesn't work with split archives. Is there a way in GUI? Some option maybe, which I could check to make all the future extractions in par with autodelete feature?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have Soad Linux installed. E17 environment really works fast for me. But I have a question, how do the one make window manager to be more feature filled? For example other e17 Linux distributions has a full path of file directory on the window tools frame so you can simply click on any directory from this list like "Home/Media/Movies" and you are brought back to the selected directory (Home for example). I managed to find how to enable it, but that section of windows manager doesn;t seem to work well, it is too small horizontally so in order to see other directories the one has to click small arrows and scroll. Resizing doens;t allow to make it bigger, how could I fix that?.
Also how do the one make the mounted mediums list on the left, similar like in gnome windows manager? I found a control panel which lets you choose between KDE, Gnome and LXDE (I think) for e17 But changing between them doesn't seem to change anything. Yes I rebooted the pc so it could take the effect, but no changes were made.
Does anyone know what happened to the Multiseat feature that had been in the feature list at one point? To briefly summarise, a single machine with multiple graphics cards, sound cards, keyboards & mice provides multiple seats for users. Each user gets their own monitor, keyboard, mouse & perhaps audio. The rest of the machine resources are then shared.
The last I saw on the topic was this discussion, although I have a recollection that there was going to be support in a newer version of X.Org. I've googled around quite a bit, but can't seem to find anything.
Anybody know anything? It would be a great feature to have and it's frustrating to have had such an omission since F8 :-o
Is there a suggestions box anywhere? Not for technical bugs (i.e. things that don't work properly), but for features that are currently not included or that could be improved.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI want to record some streaming internet radio talk shows and music performances on NPR, and I'm wondering what my options are in Ubuntu. I'm looking for something that can output high quality lossless files in several formats, hopefully including mp3 and ogg.

Being that I've never done it, I don't know what programs are out there.Does anyone have any suggestions of good editing software that is both high functioning and is fairly easy to learn and use?I'm currently running ubuntu 10.04.
View 6 Replies View RelatedThis isn't truly Slackware specific but I thought who would know better than the Slackware community. My issue is I am tired of being tech-support for my in-laws trying to keep their XP and Vista desktops functioning and would like to convert there setups to Linux. Their needs in terms of applications etc are very basic, primarily internet surfing and photos. The one application they use very frequently is a DVD backup software that runs on XP called DVD X Copy, and basically it is a one click rip and burn process for them to make backups of their DVD collection. I personally do not own and have not used such applications before so I am not familiar with some alternatives. I know of lots of programs that Rip or Burn DVD's very well but what I am looking for is a dead-simple way on Linux for them to maintain that functionality. Anything involving more than a couple steps would be challenging to them as they are very inexperienced PC users and slightly technophobic. I looked on Wine to see if the program would run under Wine but did not see it listed in the database.
View 9 Replies View RelatedWhat do folks suggest for the system listed in the title? It is an old gateway box with the original Phoenix BIOS. Currently I have Ubuntu on it and it was working ok till I went from 9 to 10, since then it has been acting up. I run it basically as a backroom server, (file server, home automation, media), but it doesn't get hit hard. I'm looking for something lighter than Ubuntu.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI'm unhappy with Microsoft, and Apple has slowly lost its appeal due to unsolvable problems with my iMac G5. Are there any especially good books or hints about how to start for
1. buying a system with Linux on it
2. Using either an iMac or another machine that I can install Linux on it
3. low cost ways of getting Linux systems
I have a user community of about 2000 users and a samba server running on AIX that currently hosts a read-only share for the whole company.
[Released]
path = /mypath
guest ok = Yes
But now I have been requested to make this share available as read-only for some users and completely inaccessible to everyone else. The number of users who will have access is probably a few hundred and I expect users to be added/removed on a daily basis. Some of the users have unix logins, while others do not. Because of this, I hesitate to mess with user mapping because I would have to manage this every day, unless I do something with a script.
Can someone suggest a scheme I can use to deny everyone except for certain users without having to use user mapping?Someone here in my office suggested we use hosts allow or deny, since the users who will still have access are located on the same subnet. However, there is a distinct possibility that a small number of people on a few other subnets will need access. Is there a way I can specify hosts allow but still allow specific users from other subnets?Forgive me if this question has been asked before. I'm sure it must have been, but I am having trouble doing a search of the archives that will give me advice about this particular problem.
Because of my background with computers, my current employer decided to throw me into a project designing some advertisements and pages in our store's catalog. This was my first time doing anything like this. They gave me QuarkXpress and I learned as I went. Since I use Linux, I would much rather use Linux to do this type of work in the future. I have downloaded Scribus and ICC profiles (color profiles). The press we went with uses CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow & Black) for primary colors. Is there anyone who has done professional printing or design that went to press in CMYK (or anything) that has suggestions for doing this type of work in Linux?

(1) iceweasel
(2) icedove
(3) gtk-gnutella
If a use a bittorrent client, however, my pptp vpn connection drops out within a few minutes. I have tried these bittorrent clients: transmission, deluge, tixati. Enabling or disabling the firewall makes no difference.I have searched pptpclient.sourceforge.net and Debian User Forums but have not been able to find any suggestions on settings to change in a bittorrent client.
Why should I use it? Why shouldn't I use nvidia's official driver?
View 1 Replies View RelatedSo I am a bit puzzled. After upgrading to 10.04, I seem to have lost my official Sun Java and plugins for Firefox/Opera. I wouldn't care normally about having the official Sun Java instead of IcedTea plugin and Open Java which is now installed, except that my university doesn't support anything for our Student Information System except for official Sun Java.
My question is this: Is there a way to install Sun Java back onto my machine instead of the "new" OpenJava?
How much time does it take (typically) for Canonical to release an updated version of the Ubuntu kernel? What I mean is that the 2.6.34 kernel is already out (on kernel.org), but we're still on 2.6.32.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have had no issues with Ubuntu 10.10, but after installing ubuntu 11.04 my sounds stopped working.
My computer is an Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU 3.20 GHz with a ASUS P7P55D Motherboard (integrated sound-card in the motherboard) 4 Gigs of RAM and a NVIDIA GTS 250 (1G RAM) Videocard
Never had any issues with it, but this version of Ubuntu my sounds have stopped working. Any ideas on how to fix this? I checked my sound menu and it does list my soundcard as "Internal Audio" 1 Output/ 1 Input Analog Stereo Duplex. Output volume is at 100% and not muted.
I have seen several threads and posts that still reflect pondering the Ubuntu 10.10 name. Just so you know, the name is official: Maverick Meerkat. Try to brainstorm names for 11.04 onward, please.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI found out that package 'qt-4.5.3_063bded-i486-3' in slackware-current has no html docs. I learn qt4 programming and I need this docs. So I got qt-4.6.1 from the official site, built, installed and use the mainline version 4.6.1 instead of recommended qt from the KDE git brunch. Honestly I see no difference between slackware's 4.5.3 and mainline 4.6.1.Is there place where I can send bug reports or suggestions about slackware distro? I really like this simple, fast, reliable and completely clear distributive and I want to help to improve it.
View 6 Replies View RelatedNow that 13.1 is available I am thinking about getting the official CD in the hope that from time to time I can use their support team. Do you think it's worth it. Naturally I would like to also support the team for their efforts. Would they support me on occasions I cannot get it here? Mostly support to do with available software packages, gnome, etc.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. I'd like to use the latest kernel from repositories (at the present moment it's 2.6.35-23), that's why I've installed backports.
These are packages:linux-image-generic-lts-backport-maverick linux-headers-generic-lts-backport-maverick
But DKMS failed to build modules for fglrx: I think it's caused by old version of fglrx.
I've been scouring the message boards and trying different things for two days and haven't found a solution. I set up Ubuntu 10.04.1 a few days ago using the server iso and selected the LAMP installation option. I will be using it as a sandbox to try out things from a PHP/MySQL book I purchased.
I have installed Gnome since sometimes I just can't get the command prompt to let me do things and Gnome may at least tell me why. I also installed PHPMyadmin.
My problem is that I can work with this thing all I want in any way I want - HTTP, SSH, SFTP, etc. - from within my home network but Apache refuses to respond to an outside request. Since it's only a test box it usually wouldn't be that big of a deal but I am going out of town for a couple of days and would really like to start working with my new book.
I am 99% sure my ISP is not blocking any ports. I have a ComTrend ADSL modem with router. I have given my Apache server a static IP on the NAT (xxx.xxx.x.101) and set up a dyndns address so I don't have to keep remembering the IP address.
Here is what I have tried so far: Setup a virtual server (port forwarding) on the router to to direct traffic on port 80 to internal IP .101The router told me its interface is using 80 so it would move itself to 8080 Made sure to also add port trigger for port 80 Made sure to save/reset the router Used my iPhone to connect via 3G - didn't work using IP or dyndns name Used iPhone to connect to 8080 and router responded
Set port forwarding/triggering for 8080 -> 80. No joy there, either Tried changing listening port to 8000Set port forwarding and triggering to allow port 8000 Changed ports.conf to read NameVirtualHost *:8000 and Listen 8000 Changed first line of /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/000-default to <VirtualHost *:8000> Restarted Apache service
Apache responded to dyndns.com:8000 from home machine No response when trying same on iPhone (sorry, it's the easiest way for me to test from outside my home network)
At one point, I added "ServerName localhost" to the otherwise empty httpd.conf file but that didn't seem to do a darn thing.
Many of the posts I have perused are at least a couple of years old and have included information on taking action with files that are not there or are no longer where they were. I have interpolated where I can but so far nothing has worked.
