General :: Suggestions For Starting Out With Linux System

Jul 19, 2010

I'm unhappy with Microsoft, and Apple has slowly lost its appeal due to unsolvable problems with my iMac G5. Are there any especially good books or hints about how to start for

1. buying a system with Linux on it
2. Using either an iMac or another machine that I can install Linux on it
3. low cost ways of getting Linux systems

General :: Changing The Linux Version Starting From Operational

I'm looking if it is possible to change the whole Linux install without having to boot up using a live-cd.
The purpose is to remotely log on to a machine using SSH or other to replace the complete installation, without loosing network setup so I don't loose contact with it. Perhaps loading the live-cd while linux is already running?

What do folks suggest for the system listed in the title? It is an old gateway box with the original Phoenix BIOS. Currently I have Ubuntu on it and it was working ok till I went from 9 to 10, since then it has been acting up. I run it basically as a backroom server, (file server, home automation, media), but it doesn't get hit hard. I'm looking for something lighter than Ubuntu.

General :: Boot Linux System On USB-stick

Apr 20, 2011

I have installed a Debian System on a removable USB-drive just the same way I would do it for a normal harddisk drive. All was working fine until I tried to boot the system.I have set up the USB-stick as first boot device in the BIOS, and written grub in the MBR of the stick. When trying to boot it, "Grub Error 2" will always be risen (I am using grub-0.98).

The only drive I have installed except the USB-stick is a SATA-harddisk, so normally the USB-stick is called /dev/sdb.I have already tried changing root in menu.lst to (hd0,0) or the kernel root to /dev/sda1 but nothing seems to help.

General :: Fedora 14 Freezes While Starting System Logger

Jun 13, 2011

I'm having trouble starting Fedora 14 on my computer. The startup procedure freezes while starting system logger. Before this started happening, I had formatted one of my logical disk partitions which is supposed to be mounted under the /var directory. I think may be the cause of this problem. However, I don't know how to fix it, as I can't get into the Linux command line to do a umount. I don't have a CD with which to repair the system, so is there any way to fix this problem without one?

Slackware :: DVD Backup Software Suggestions

Jun 30, 2010

This isn't truly Slackware specific but I thought who would know better than the Slackware community. My issue is I am tired of being tech-support for my in-laws trying to keep their XP and Vista desktops functioning and would like to convert there setups to Linux. Their needs in terms of applications etc are very basic, primarily internet surfing and photos. The one application they use very frequently is a DVD backup software that runs on XP called DVD X Copy, and basically it is a one click rip and burn process for them to make backups of their DVD collection. I personally do not own and have not used such applications before so I am not familiar with some alternatives. I know of lots of programs that Rip or Burn DVD's very well but what I am looking for is a dead-simple way on Linux for them to maintain that functionality. Anything involving more than a couple steps would be challenging to them as they are very inexperienced PC users and slightly technophobic. I looked on Wine to see if the program would run under Wine but did not see it listed in the database.

Software :: Samba Suggestions On Group Permissions

Jan 14, 2009

I have a user community of about 2000 users and a samba server running on AIX that currently hosts a read-only share for the whole company.

[Released]
path = /mypath
guest ok = Yes

But now I have been requested to make this share available as read-only for some users and completely inaccessible to everyone else. The number of users who will have access is probably a few hundred and I expect users to be added/removed on a daily basis. Some of the users have unix logins, while others do not. Because of this, I hesitate to mess with user mapping because I would have to manage this every day, unless I do something with a script.

Can someone suggest a scheme I can use to deny everyone except for certain users without having to use user mapping?Someone here in my office suggested we use hosts allow or deny, since the users who will still have access are located on the same subnet. However, there is a distinct possibility that a small number of people on a few other subnets will need access. Is there a way I can specify hosts allow but still allow specific users from other subnets?Forgive me if this question has been asked before. I'm sure it must have been, but I am having trouble doing a search of the archives that will give me advice about this particular problem.

Fedora :: Can Use All-in-one Printer With LINUX Operating System?

Nov 24, 2009

Can I use my all-in-one printer with LINUX Operating System? KODAK All-in-One Printers are designed to to work with WINDOWS XP, WINDOWS VISTA, WINDOWS 7 Operating Systems and with MAC OS. Because of its open-source nature, LINUX OS requires a complex, dedicated support team. LINUX OS represents a very small percentage of installed operating systems in the U.S. As a result, costs for ongoing support and a dedicated support team are not justified at this time.

As Kodak continues to launch products, and as updates are made to LINUX OS, launching LINUX Drivers would require ongoing support and driver updates to Kodak's software. Customer support teams are focusing efforts on current issues concerning the more prevalent WINDOWS and MAC OS; adding support for LINUX OS would take resources away from these issues. Compatibility information for KODAK All-in-One Printers is printed on the retail package so that our customers can be aware of the printer's hardware and software requirements at the time or purchase. For more information about specifications and compatibility, visit KODAK All-in-One Printers.

Software :: Apps And Suggestions For Press Quality Projects

Sep 19, 2010

Because of my background with computers, my current employer decided to throw me into a project designing some advertisements and pages in our store's catalog. This was my first time doing anything like this. They gave me QuarkXpress and I learned as I went. Since I use Linux, I would much rather use Linux to do this type of work in the future. I have downloaded Scribus and ICC profiles (color profiles). The press we went with uses CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow & Black) for primary colors. Is there anyone who has done professional printing or design that went to press in CMYK (or anything) that has suggestions for doing this type of work in Linux?

Ubuntu Servers :: Reboot The System With A Linux CD To Do The Backup?

Mar 1, 2010

I have a personal ubuntu server that provides apache, glassfish, firewall, routing, email, CVS, MySQL, etc.... This server has been running for a while with two hard drives configured into a RAID 1 array. The array has two partitions, one for swap and one for the data. I currently back up the data with a removable hard drive. I use dd and create an image of one drive and the MBRs (partition tables) of each drive. In a disaster situation I can use this data to recreate one drive and then re mirror it to the second, or just boot the back up.I like this solution because I can easily recover from bare metal, and the backup is transparent. I can browser it if needed since its an uncompressed image of the drive. The one drawback is that I need to reboot the system with a linux CD to do the backup.

My hard drive space is almost at capacity. So what I want to do is add a third drive to the array and migrate it to RAID 5. However this will cause my current backup method to no longer work. How can I back up this RAID 5 array. I need to back up the entire system, and not just the data. I have made many tweaks to the system over the years that it has been running that I can't lose if a restore is needed. I have seen a large thread here that people have been using tar. My concern with tar is how do you use a tar archive to restore a system to a new array. Im assuming that you would need to setup the array and then just restore the archive? Also, i don't have much faith in using tar on a running system. Doesn't this open yourself up to corrupted backups? My second idea is using rsync. While I consider myself experienced in linux from 10 years of personal and professions use, I have not had much experience with this utility. Would rsync provide a more reliable way to backup a running system that would enable a bare metal restore later? I once read something about people using rsync with hard links to create a backup that could store many incremental backups. My main concern with both rsync and tar is not being able to restore the OS to the state that it was in at the time of the backup.

Ubuntu :: Linux Working Only Rebooting System From Windows XP

Feb 11, 2010

I have noticed that ubuntu 9.10 (but also other distro and in general those that configure the network automatically at startup) crashed if my pc boot directly with a linux kernel at power on.This does not happen if the first boot is done with windows xp and then rebooting the pc and choosing the same linux kernel. Some distro (for example SysrescueCD) that does not configure the network at startup can work but also with these if I try to configure the network using the command ifconfig eth0 the system crashes. My network card is a SiS191 Ethernet and linux recognized it using sis190 module.I suppose that something happen during the first power on, some inizialization done with windows xp but does not done with linux in fact after a reboot made from windows xp without shutdown the pc, with Linux I can configure the network using ifconfig without crash.
Any ideas to solve this without have to boot always windows as first?

Ubuntu :: System Freezes When Starting X

Jun 6, 2010

I've trouble with booting up xubuntu koala:
When switching to the x11-login, the computer freezes during the change of the screen-resolution. Even switching to a console (ctrl+alt+F1/F2/F3...), ctrl+alt+del or pushing the power-button is not possible. After switching off the PC manually, it won't boot at all and freezes directly after switching on again (at bios-time).

Turning the PC off and on again helps - everything is okay afterwards. This doesn't happen always but it is annoying. Sometimes I have to try this procedure 5 o6 times until I can use the computer. Which of the thousand of log-files is the right one to look in? I am using Xubuntu and a Ati Radeon Xpress Graphics card, along with an AMD64 and the 64-Bit-Version of Xubuntu.

OpenSUSE Install :: Not Starting After System Recovery

Nov 2, 2010

I have a HP mini 5101 wit OpenSuse 11.2. Unfortunately, I wanted to have a newer version 11.3, but I upgraded in a wrong way and the system not started any more, failed in start-up level 5 and ran the Kernel. I tried to find the solution, searched on google, but I think made it worse (personal feeling): made some changes in xconfig. Of course, the problem remained. Then I decided to make a system recovery. Everything was OK, until the last step, when the system prepared the first login. I saw this message for a few seconds:

Code:
*** Starting Yast2 ***
basename: missing operand
Try 'basename --help' for more information
SPP: could not open file: at /usr/share/sax/modules/SPPParse.pm line 61
When I switch on my netbook, during the loading everything seems ok, after loading I see the background but no login window, nothing. I don't know what's the problem.
I started the system recovery again and again. In few times I saw this on screen for a second, then return the background:
[Code]...
