Dec 27, 2009I'm trying to persuade my classmate migrating to linux but they always fall back to windows when homeworks require creating GUI (graphical user interface) applications. Not only because C# and Window forms/WPF is so sissily easy to use. But some teachers only test homework on Window machine. I have tried pyGTK and wxPython but they have some flaws. wxPython seem a little bit messy with so many look-alike class name and it's ID based event binding is somewhat awkward. pyGTK seems nice and neat but it doesn't have Mac port yet.

Dec 23, 2010I have a Debian server running at the gateway level on a LAN. This runs squid for creating block lists of websites - for eg. blocking social networking on the LAN. Also uses iptables.
I am able to do a lot of things with squid & iptables, but a few things seem difficult to achieve.
1) If I block http://www.facebook.com, people can still access https://www.facebook.com because squid doesn't go through https traffic by default. However, if the users set the gateway IP address as proxy on their web browser, then https is also blocked. So I can do one thing - using iptables drop all outgoing 443 traffic, so that people are forced to set proxy on their browser in order to browse any HTTPS traffic. However, is there a better solution for this.
2) As the number of blocked urls increase in squid, I am planning to integrate squidguard. However, the good squidguard lists are not free for commercial use. Anyone knows of a good squidguard list which is free.
3) Block yahoo messenger, gtalk etc. There are so many ports on which these Instant Messenger softwares work. You need to drop lots of outgoing ports in iptables. However, new ports get added, so you have to keep adding them. And even if your list of ports is current, people can still use the web version of gtalk etc.
4) Blocking P2P. Haven't been able to figure out how to do this till now.

There aren't problems about office automation, I've already noticed that openoffice is a great replacement for MS Office and also for technical computing there are packages like Octave or Scilab that works as well as Matlab. These discoveries made me a real linux enthusiastic.
Unfortunately I wasn't able to find out something similar to Simulink, first disappointment. Anybody knows if such a kind of simulation software can be replaced?
Anyway, real troubles arises when one comes to CAD/CAE applications. Here I've found a desolate tract. Googling around I've found some packages but they all are very minimal compared to commercial software.
Well, I'm working with NX6 and Ansys that are considered at the leading edge and I didn't expect to find open sources competitors but at least something sufficient.
Yesterday I've tried Salome-Meca with Code Aster (on a CAElinux live CD) for a simple linear structural analysis. Ho boy! It works but it's byzantine! It's almost like Ansys 15 years ago. Maybe I must just practice but the impression is that it's impossible to be effective and quick as required by today's industry using open source codes.

Mar 4, 2011I am going to make a long story by saying that the ATI propriety driver crashed my whole system and I managed to get a backup of my files and such so I did not lose to much, but after installing 10.10 I cannot find the "social" icon on the top gnome panel. With this I mean the icon you could click and then you could compose new mail, check mail, start liferea, you name it.

Dec 25, 2010I recently "saw the light" and realized that ubuntu was becoming a buggy overly-social joke of a distro, and i found that fedora seemed to fix most of my issues with making my laptop run well.Samba was not one of them.Anyway, I installed samba, check. (I also installed the graphical utility). I checked off samba and the client in the firewall. check. I used the utility (system-config-samba?) to switch the workgroup over. check.it did not want to access my fileserver at first; it saw it but as soon as i tried to mount and open it, it timedout and gave me the "unable to mount location" "Failed to retrieve share list from server" error. the next day it worked perfectly. now it is back to not working. it also is not working on my main rig (but it has a faulty hard disk so it will be out for a while).

Apr 18, 2010i have a backtrack install that i would like to keep while installing suse for an everyday OS; i start the install process but when it gets to partitioning the hard drive, it doesnt seem to recognize anything already being on there; it just gives me the setup for suse, ie:
sda1 ext3 = OS sda2 or sda5 = swap. do i have to configure a partition scheme? i installed ubuntu on a desktop alongside windows very easily due to grub graphical install/partition; is there not a similar function for suse?
