Ubuntu Security :: Some Sites Blocked - Accessing Some Sites - Amazon Paypal And Bigstockphoto Really Slow

Feb 9, 2011

In the past week or so I've noticed some weird network behaviour. I find accessing some sites such as Amazon, Paypal, and Bigstockphoto really slow. Sometimes the page will not load at all. Other sites are fine. The problem sites are not a problem for others on my LAN at home. When I try to open the problem sites, I can see in Firestarter blocked connections coming from 2.1(8/9).xxx.xxx on various ports such as 36007. This only happens for the problem sites. I attached a typical output from firestarter.

This happens with Firfeox or Chrome. Using Ubuntu 10.10

Ubuntu :: Loading So Very Slow When Accessing Web Sites?

Apr 27, 2011

I have just installed ubuntu 10.1 along side my windows xp. It installed nicely and boots up promptly. When I try to go to a web site, it takes forever to load. It can take up to 1 minute to load a page. Why is that. I thought that Linux was supposed to be faster. When I go back to windows, I don't have this problem.

Networking :: Bypassing ISP Traffic Shapers?

Feb 18, 2010

I have done some research on the net and I am battling to find effective methods in other to bypass those irritating ISP traffic shapers. I have used SSH tunneling to reduce latency (which is my primary goal, i dont care about silly torrents, etc) by about 200ms.

Do you know of any other way that I could improve this latency? When I ping my server in Germany (from South Africa) i get a latency of about 185ms... I was hoping to get online gaming traffic to around about 250ms or even less if possible... Right now its sitting on 550ms WITH SSH tunneling and 800ms without it... (to Blizzard servers)

Server :: Blocking Social Networking On The LAN?

Dec 23, 2010

I have a Debian server running at the gateway level on a LAN. This runs squid for creating block lists of websites - for eg. blocking social networking on the LAN. Also uses iptables.

I am able to do a lot of things with squid & iptables, but a few things seem difficult to achieve.

1) If I block http://www.facebook.com, people can still access https://www.facebook.com because squid doesn't go through https traffic by default. However, if the users set the gateway IP address as proxy on their web browser, then https is also blocked. So I can do one thing - using iptables drop all outgoing 443 traffic, so that people are forced to set proxy on their browser in order to browse any HTTPS traffic. However, is there a better solution for this.

2) As the number of blocked urls increase in squid, I am planning to integrate squidguard. However, the good squidguard lists are not free for commercial use. Anyone knows of a good squidguard list which is free.

3) Block yahoo messenger, gtalk etc. There are so many ports on which these Instant Messenger softwares work. You need to drop lots of outgoing ports in iptables. However, new ports get added, so you have to keep adding them. And even if your list of ports is current, people can still use the web version of gtalk etc.

4) Blocking P2P. Haven't been able to figure out how to do this till now.

Ubuntu Networking :: Android Tablet Bypassing Proxy

Apr 27, 2011

I know this isn't directly related to Ubuntu (even if the rest of my network is pure Ubuntu!), but I haven't had any luck uncovering this info through the usual channels. Does anyone know which port Android 2.2 on a VIA wm8650 uses to access the Internet? My Wifi is routed through a Linux firewall (Ipcop) which forces normal outbound Internet traffic via normal ports (80, 8080 etc) through the ipcop proxy, but the wm8650 somehow bypasses the proxy. I don't know whether I'm just missing the port the tablet is actually using.

Programming :: What Language Would You Write A Social Networking Site In?

Jan 8, 2010

I'm a full-time developer in my day-job, I get paid real money for it and everything! Nowadays I generally write web-based business apps using VB.net and ASPX.net, but I'v recently been asked to come up with a social networking type site (something in-between Facebook and twitter) that will initially be used for training purposes... don't ask or I'll have to send the men in the dodgie overcoats round

Problem is, it is to be written like real social-networking site, I've no idea what I'm going to make it look like and was, more fundamentally, wondering what to write it in?I've written commercial systems using Perl, PHP, ASP and the .net (VB and C) stuff.

CentOS 5 Networking :: Samba Share Access Restriction?

Apr 29, 2010

cannot restrict share access to a single user. I've played with the security and valid users options in the smb.conf and I can get it to mount if I remove the valid users option, but this does not provide the access restriction I need. I also left it open and tried making the folder permissions rwx for backupadmin only and that didn't work. I'm using a credentials file which I include below, but I've tried manually entering them in the command too.

[root@aaphst02 /]# mount -t cifs //aapsan01/aapxen01 /mnt/aapxen01 --verbose -o credentials=/root/smbcreds
mount.cifs kernel mount options: unc=//aapsan01aapxen01,ip=10.0.1.34,user=backupadmin,ver=1,rw,credentials=/root/smbcreds,pass=********

General :: SSH Tunneling For Bypassing Firewall

Aug 4, 2010

I am on Linux on machine LOCAL (my notebook).I ssh into a company machine REMOTE which is behind a firewall and ONLY allows incoming ssh connections (port 22), no outbound connections whatsoever. I do have full root access on both, LOCAL and REMOTE, REMOTE is however a VPS and behind a hardware firewall.I now need network access on REMOTE (HTTP and other protocols) for downloading and building some software. I also need to access to NON HTTP protocols such as git.

I was hoping to set up a reverse SSH tunnel for using my LOCAL machine, where I could be running a socks server. So that network access on REMOTE would be redirected over the SSH tunnel to a socks server running on machine LOCAL.How would I go about setting something like this up?

I presume this can be acomplished with Mod_Rewrite and .htaccess but i just wanted to know if there is a more global option for this

Fedora Networking :: Recently "saw The Light" And Realized That Was Becoming A Buggy Overly-social Joke Of A Distro?

Dec 25, 2010

I recently "saw the light" and realized that ubuntu was becoming a buggy overly-social joke of a distro, and i found that fedora seemed to fix most of my issues with making my laptop run well.Samba was not one of them.Anyway, I installed samba, check. (I also installed the graphical utility). I checked off samba and the client in the firewall. check. I used the utility (system-config-samba?) to switch the workgroup over. check.it did not want to access my fileserver at first; it saw it but as soon as i tried to mount and open it, it timedout and gave me the "unable to mount location" "Failed to retrieve share list from server" error. the next day it worked perfectly. now it is back to not working. it also is not working on my main rig (but it has a faulty hard disk so it will be out for a while).

I was under the impression the Linux (in my case the Fedora OS) is very secure. However I've learnt with deep concern that that one can have access to the system during system startup i.e one can give various startup directives and bypass the normal login UI to have direct root access.

Is there a way to disble this so that the directives during startup are fixed and cannot be altered. I would like to make the system secure to the maximum extent possible.

Networking :: New ISP Can Connect To Only A Few Sites?

Feb 2, 2009

I have an odd Linux problem. Changed ISP recently -- Windows NT4 & W95 work fine. Linux has worked fine on previous ISPs, but on the newest ISP, I can connect successfully on Linux, but can only communicate w/maybe one out of 10 sites (Google, for ex.). Mostly I get "cannot connect to site". Some points:

-Linux is Slackware w/kernel build 2.4.26.
-No settings changed from Linux setup that worked fine on previous ISPs.
-/var/log/Log file says PPP connects via CHAP successfully & no problems..
-I don't see any similarity on the few sites I can connect to -- seems random.
-ISP is useless -- say they "don't support Linux".
-Using Firefox & Konqueror browsers.

Networking :: Block Some Sites In A LAN?

Jul 18, 2011

I need to block some websites and torrents on my LAN running on mostly WIndows XP pcs and a Windows 2008 domain controller. It's possible to block some sites using DNS in Windows Domain controller, but users have the rights to change DNS and bypass the rule. Editing HOSTS file doesn't workThen I tried using Avast antivirus Site Block feature, but that doesn't work on any browser except Mozilla. We have to use Epic and Mozilla Firefox. We can't use a dedicated hardware firewall due to budget constraints and the fact that we have multiple ADSL lines for internet. No single gateway.
