View 6 RepliesI am trying to use Firefox to open a *.csv file from a download button on a Web page. The download button would open a dialog that offers me to choose to either open the file with Open Office Calc or save the file. I would like to open it on the fly. But an error comes up that reads:
Code:
/tmp/HIST1031-4.csv could not be opened, because the associated helper application does not exist. Change the association in your preferences.
The helper application in Firefox's Edit > Preferences is Open Office Calc. I checked in /usr/lib/openoffice.org3/program/, and found the script for scalc.
i am using Fedora 14. Once system get hanged during opening a video file so I had to restart the system by pressing restart button. But after restarting there are few problems appearing like system monitor not opening and Thunder bird opening but not showing any folder including inbox.

Looks like SElinux has stopped working
After boot, Fedora 14 gives the following message, on my HP Pavilion dv2701tx laptop.
Starting udev: udevd-work[454]: error opening ATTR{/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1a.1/usb4/4-1/4-1:1.0/power/level} for writing: No such file or directory
I suspect it has something to do with my Authentec AES2501 fingerprint reader. I need it to work for my project, but it's not working, even though it works fine in the Windows 7 installed on my system.
Simple logging script that allows user to enter quick notes and questions, but I can not get it to pass punctuation '?. no matter what I type after 'n' i need that to be inserted at the end of the working project note file.Any help and working examples would be appreciated, but please also direct me to the proper reading material so I can learn something - not looking for someone to just do it for me.usage:
Code:
bob@smith:~/notes$ n bob's script sucks?

I am running gentoo openbox(rox file manager and desktop) I installed Digikam and Amarok. But I have problems with files which include special character in their names(such as ,, ,ğ... ) The files are shown with strange and weird characters in the file dialogs of Digikam and Amarok.
I don't have this problem in other applications. I can create files with special character included. I think some settings do not agree with KDE4. How can I solve this problem? Does anyone have an idea? I also installed KDE systemsettings program but could not find a relevant config option for character encoding.
I have a file with special characters that need to be replaced. I've been working on this for a day and have run out of time.
Example: FILE='/var/tmp/S0000000.LOG.March-24-2011:10:51.tar'
Need to replace the ' with a " on all lines in the file.
I am having difficulty getting sed to replace a string of text in an XML file, despite the fact that I have no trouble using grep to find that same string. Since the new string and old string to be replaced contain a lot of special characters, I thought it best to store them in variables as opposed to using a slew of backslashes:
OLD_STRING='<property name="webServiceHost">${jboss.bind.address}</property>'
NEW_STRING='<!--<property name="webServiceHost">${jboss.bind.address}</property>-->'

Device/Special file Clairification Requested.I'm reading a short article on Device/special files because it is related to VFS. This article has this paragraph that has to many pronouns in it to get an understanding of. URL..."In short, a device file (also called as a special file) is an interface for a device driver that appears in a file system as if it were an ordinary file. This allows software to interact with the device driver using standard input/output system calls, which simplifies many tasks."
What does a Device file have to do with the Application and the Driver communicating? Wouldn't the order of data transfer be , Application to driver and then to Device file?
We're in the process of implementing an offsite backup of all our servers to a remote Linux server. We're using rsync over ssh.What I've found is that characters such as ±, ¶,´ and £ are replaced on the Linux server with underscores.I don't mind if it changes these characters in the filenames of documents, but when it renames a language pack from Espa±ol.clx to Espa_ol.clx, it could cause issues for us further down the line.
What do I need to do differently to make the special characters copy over correctly? For the initial sync which will take place locally, before the machine is moved offsite, I have SAMBA enabled. I am able to copy files from Windows to the Samba share, retaining the original filename, though it looks different in the Linux directory listing, i.e. t̻st becomes ĻstThese files get deleted by rsync when it runs, as it does not match the filenames.
I'm having issue when trying to change a line in a file

View 2 Replies View RelatedI ran a program that writes continuously from 1 every line. After some time I ran '/dev/null > temp' Problem1: bash: /dev/null: Permission denied (Yes, the permissions of /dev/null are correct ... crw-rw-rw-. I removed and created it again, but no change) I used 'cat temp' to see the contents and first few lines deleted (working correctly). Problem2: I can't open the file (with double click or with any graphical editor like gedit)
Apart from these problems, I have another question... Is there a way to trim a active log file to say 80% without affecting any logs that server might be writing.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've got my Samba shares up and running. I can stream files from the server, I can create files on the server, and I can copy files from the server.
Running a Windows program (from a Windows box) directly from the Samba server, however, is turning into a nightmare. I'm getting Access is Denied errors from the Windows box, yet I can copy/create/etc from the entire directory with no problems.
Are there any special permissions I need to run EXE files from a Windows box, located on a Samba share? I've already chmod'd everything to 777, and I show full access when ls -Z is used.
