Fedora :: Terminals Opening In ~/Documents Instead Of ~

Graphical terms and xterm start up in ~/Documents. Konsole starts at ~ (as expected). I know I'm missing something (probably long forgotten) but I can't seem to find where the Documents is coming from in the other terms. I thought xterm ALWAYS started in the user home. Is it a bash thing? I have a ~/.bashrc with

Ubuntu :: Opening Applications (only Gnome-terminals) In Defined Workspace?

Aug 18, 2010

Ideally I would like to set a keyboard shortcut to open a set of applications. The applications (mainly different gnome-terminals) should be opened in different, previously defined workspaces. I had a look around but could not find a simple solution (maybe it could be done in devilspie but I would like to avoid that). If I limit myself only to gnome-terminal and instead of using the keyboard shortcuts call the application in the shell the placement of the terminal can be done by using "--geometry" (see "man gnome-terminal" and "man X") e.g. "gnome-terminal --geometry 50x20+200+300". wmcrtl show me that my 6 workspaces are treated as one desktop (my interpretation - maybe wrong):

Code:
$ wmctrl -d
0 * DG: 7680x1024 VP: 0,0 WA: 0,1 1280x1023 Desk 1

Ubuntu :: LibreOffice 3 "General Network Error Has Occurred" While Opening Ubuntu One Documents

May 1, 2011

I cannot open documents (.odt, .doc etc) synchronized through Ubuntu One in LibreOffice 3 on my laptop running Ubuntu 11.04 (network upgrade from 10.10). LibreOffice quits by throwing an error message: "General network error has occurred". However, if I copy the same files outside the Ubuntu One synced directory (e.g. to ~/Desktop), I can open them without any errors. I just can't open them within the synced directory.

FYI, I have synchronized an existing folder on Ubuntu One after the upgrade and the synchronization has been smooth. The synced folder is a sub-directory of ~/Documents and has local sync enabled. what's going on? Let me know what more info can I provide? EDIT: I can open other files like .pdf, .mp3, .php, shared in the same directory. I'm having problem with LibreOffice in particular.

I'm not very unix savy so I've been using Ubuntu tweak PersonalDefault Folder Locations setting and browsing to my Windows folders. But it doesn't work.I have managed to make a desktop 'short cut' and that works but I'd rather set the system wide default document folders.

Fedora :: Virtual Terminals Not Working / What Ot Do?

Jul 13, 2009

Whenever I boot my machine into runlevel 5 (X support) I can't get to any of the virtual terminals. If I do a ps and grep for mingetty I see terminals 4-6 are running. But ctrl-alt-f{4-6} just put me to a blank screen. If I hit alt-f1 I get back to X. I've found that if I start tty2 by running "sudo mingetting tty2" I get the following error in /var/log/messages: mingetty: tty2: no controlling tty: Operation not permitted. I am not using selinux and have noticed that /etc/inittab no longer has the ttys. The reading I have done thus far says it's started by gdm but I don't really see a lot of info about controlling them. Any ideas on this?

Fedora :: Virtual Terminals In F15 'graphical Mode'?

Jun 5, 2011

Has anyone else here had a problem getting virtual terminals to work when booting into F15's 'graphical mode'? This is what used to be runlevel 5 in the old SysV init system, before the switch to systemd. Before F15, I could do a Ctrl-Alt-F[n] (for n=1,...6) to get virtual terminals while in runlevel 5, and this was easy to control by editing /etc/inittab.

But with systemd, /etc/inittab is no longer used, and finding where the virtual terminals get created took me a bit of time. I tracked it down to the /lib/systemd/system/prefdm.service file, which seems to stop creating virtual terminals after tty1 in order to prevent the display manager and plymouth from conflicting on that virtual terminal. I'm using the Slim display manager (installed via yum), and I only got tty1 (showing console messages), tty2 took me back to X, and there were no tty3-6 any more. I noticed from ps that there was some kind of "plymouth --wait" process running, so I killed it. After doing so, the other virtual terminals showed up. Has anyone else here experienced something similar?

It appears that /lib/systemd/system/plymouth-quit.service is not exiting properly, and this is causing the problem. This problem only occurs in graphical mode, not in console mode (what used to be runlevel 3). My first solution was to put "/bin/plymouth quit" in /erc/rc.d/rc.local, and upon rebooting that did indeed fix the problem. But eventually I just removed plymouth altogether, which also fixes the problem. It would be nice though if plymouth-quit.service just worked as it was supposed to. I'm just wondering if anyone else has seen this problem.

Fedora Security :: Resume From Hibernate - Terminals Still Logged In?

Mar 12, 2010

I am pretty new to Linux, but this can't be the way the system is supposed to operate.

Fedora 12
KDE 4.4
kernel 2.6.32.9-70.fc12.i686
Toshiba satellite L305D

As of updating KDE to 4.4 and a kernel update from two weekends ago hibernate/resume works perfectly. The problem is I feel that all terminals should be locked/logged out automatically upon suspend/hibernate. Through bug reporting at KDE found that an additional setting is required in KDE to lock the desktop before suspend/hibernate. But any of my other terminals that are logged in remain logged in upon resume. Is there an additional setting that I have to flip to secure the terminals? Would this be considered a security hole? Is there anything short of me manually logging out that I can do to automate locking/logging my terminals?

Fedora :: LaTeX Documents Compiled - Are Different To Those On Mac ?

Jun 18, 2010

Today I discovered a strange issue regarding LaTeX. I am currently working on my thesis and sometimes edit it on my laptop with F13 x86_64, and others with my office's Mac (Leopard). Fedora has TexLive installed (default Latex distribution) and I believe the Mac has its default distribution as well.

The problem is that the Mac seems to compile the document better (Latex + Bibtex + Latex + dvips + ps2pdf): page distribution looks better for one thing, space is better used. I notice that images (EPS) are rendered with an extra blank space on the bottom when compiling in Linux (which might be responsible for the page's arrangement).

Is there something I can do to fix this? Some option that perhaps the Mac has as a default but must be specified in Linux?

Fedora :: Get Rid Of Recent Documents Under Places Menu On Gnome Panel?

Oct 18, 2009

There are measures to stop this in Windows even though there are still things you can't get rid of. Now on to my question, Why can't I edit the Places menu but I can edit the Applications and System menus. I really want to get rid of the Recent Documents menu header. I don't like things like that right up on front street. I am quite a stickler about privacy and one of the reasons I decided to try out linux is because I heard it was better in the sense of respecting privacy. But now I am seeing that you don't even have the ability to get rid of a tracking item such as Recent Documents. Quite disappointing.

I can understand tracking recent changes to the system but it is not necessary to track what you open or what you browse on the internet. Hence Firfox's ability to not store history and the clear cache, history, etc. on shutdown of Firefox. So Am I misinformed about the fact that linux does respect privacy? What kind of world are we coming to that it is necessary to track everything. Especially here in the U.S., I mean I'm thinking 1984 here lol. Anyway, how to remove these tracking features in Fedora. I mean in the sense of just stopping it. It sucks to have to go through and "clear" everything that tracks you every time you want to log off or shut down.

Fedora :: Feature - Transparent Local Version Control System For Documents

Nov 13, 2009

I think a version control system should be integrated by default into the user's documents directory. Any time a file is saved, the app would check to see if there is another file by the same name, and if there is, make a hidden copy of the previous version with name such as ".filename.[datestamp]" . This would be similar to what gEdit already does, but at a broader level.

A more robust system would include controls for watching more directories. It would also show comparisons with previous versions of the document. Being file based, it wouldn't care if unneeded backup files are destroyed.

If file space is an issue, backup files would only contain the differences between the next and previous versions. This would mean, however, that back-up files would be useless if a few are irretrievable.

Obviously, users would be able to turn this app on or off, if they don't need/desire this feature.
