I am running squeeze for a couple of months now
And suddenly my CD tray keeps opening and closing I believe it started after the latest upgrade (I dont remember which packages aptitude picked up)
So is this a bug in squeeze or a bug in my CD tray
how I can set up something to automatically open port 119 at 10pm and close it again at 3am..

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an older Gateway P4 computer running Ubuntu 9.10. I had removed the nm-applet from the systray because I wanted the system to have a static IP. That was several months ago. Today, unthinkingly, I tried to re-add the icon by going into System -> Preferences -> Start-up Applications. I put check in the box next to "Network Manager", then re-started my system. However, when my system came back up, instead of the Network Manager icon, I had two System Audio icons in the tray. One was actually for the audio; the other one just said "Notification Icon" when I put my mouse over it. Again, without thinking, I clicked on "remove from panel". That's where my problems have begun. As soon as I did that, the top and bottom bars disappeared, then reappeared. Except now they're doing that constantly. My machine has become totally unusable. I did manage to turn it off and re-start it, but it comes right back to doing this again.
I can remotely log in from another system (which is where I'm typing this message from) and see that, according to "top", the "gnome-panel" is running at anywhere from 30 - 50% of my CPU. I can provide any logs or other information necessary since I can access the system remotely.
I recently upgraded my laptop from Lucid to Meerkat 10.10. Everything was fine until I closed my laptop cover. In "suspend" , I can't come back. I get a black screen with a frozen cursor, and I have to reboot. Not a good situation with a laptop. Is there anything I can do? I prefer Meerkat to Lucid for my laptop except for this one area.
View 2 Replies View Relatedsince I've upgraded to 11.04 on my Dell Latitude E6400, every time I close the lid and open it again, Ubuntu fires up but the screen itself is totally messed up, it's just random patterns all over the screen. The laptop is locked, so I can type in my password, hit enter, and once I'm logged in again the screen is perfectly fine, so the system itself works, only the display is the problem
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a script which takes a file as input and reads it in while loop cuts the name of table and stores in a variable opens DB connection and queries for rowcount in that table closes the connection reads another file and then follows step 1 through 4 till EOF is reached. Now this script is taking longer to execute maybe because the DB connection is opened and closed each time.

I was thinking of changing this.I want to open the DB connection just once and then query it for all tables and then exit.
When I close my laptop and open it the screen become grey and blotchy with almost an argyle pattern. This has only started happening after I configured the usb ports to work in my VM. My startup screen also says something about a usb problem, and S for skip and M to manually fix it but I have had no problems with my usb. Oh except for my computer won't start
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've just installed kubuntu 10.04 x64 and I'm slowly working through lots of little niggly problems that I'm having getting it all set up.My graphics seem VERY sluggish doing things like opening and closing windows, popping up menus etc.I have an Athlon II 250 3.0ghz processor, 2GB RAM and onboard graphics ATI HD2100 (740G chipset).I tried to get the proprietary graphics driver installed to see if that made any difference but it wouldn't recognise the onboard graphics, a bit of googling seems to suggest they have actually dropped support for this model?After removing the proprietary stuff it seems even more sluggish than it did before.

I have to use the manual feed, as the tray jams.
When set to manual feed, it prints fine in B&W and color.
However, page 2 goes from manual to tray 1! One page at a time works great.
FC 13, recent install, Dell 3100 cn printer USB.
It should be a simple thing to change to print from tray 2 instead of tray 1. Tray 1 is a manual feed tray, how do I change this?

I've installed proprietary driver and configured xorg long ago, but now very often I see artefacts on desktop after i close a programm, i.e. as if some of the parts of window or text still remain on the desktop after i close the window. I use gnome as my de, dunno what's happened.

Everything is working fine except the button that is pressed when I close my lid. Hibernate works, Suspend works, blank screen works. user is member of the group "powerdev". I really thought thread "closing-laptop-lid-renders-computer-unusable-786822" would bring me a solution. When I close my lid my screens turns black with my mouse cursor on it. Connections with ssh are broken. Keyboard is dead, mouse pad too. It looks like it never start any software it just hangs immediately. I cant find anything in my logs.
I am running Debian Squeeze under the new kernel in the Debian updates. And I have a Walkman media player and whenever I start the program with it plugged in it will run for a few seconds and close. But when the device isn't plugged in it will run forever (the right way until I close it). While it was running I too a look at the contents of the walkman through the devices icon on the left and everything is listed as unknown. Whats going on here what do I have to upgrade/downgrade or install/uninstall.

I have configured my system to suspend whenever I close the lid, by using the Power Management applet provided by my desktop manager (see my later comment). However, sometimes, when I reopen the lid, I see that the laptop is switched on but it won't resume, while the CPU heats up. I must shutdown forcefully. What could be causing this?
I have found this thread [URL] .... in regard to OpenSUSE. Is it relevant for Debian as well?

Clarified that the suspend is a user-level setting.
After I close lid on my laptop, it goes to sleep, but after I open it up, it never wakes up.

I have decided to install Debian 8.2 in my desktop. I am test driving it in virtual box find and solve any problem I may face later on. The isp I use provides me with a shared ip every time and I have to create a DSL connection with username and password to connect to it. I can create the connection from the gui connection manager using "nm-connection-editor" command in Debian.
I am using elementary os freya and I can do so from the system tray at the top right. So, I wanted to do the same in debian also. But I can only create VLAN, VPN, Bridge, Team and Bond. There is no option for DSL but if I create one in the way mentioned before, it appears as a profile under "Wired" network option in system tray. I read some post regarding network option in system tray but I could not make them work and other I did not understand. In KDE window manager I have this feature but I want to use gnome 3.

So i opened synaptic and installed broadcom drivers for my wireless "broadcom-sta-common" & "broadcom-sta-source" & "firmware-brcm80211".
After I done that and restarted my laptop the wireless was gone from connection option and i cant get it back. My Wireless driver is "Broadcom Corporation BCM4313 802.11bgn Wireless Network Adapter" ...
I have a multi-platform QT4 application and I'm trying to make it run on Debian 7.x. In this app I'm creating 2 QSystemTrayIcon 's and when I run this application on Debian 7.8 with Gnome 3 disabled both tray icons show up nicely in the notification area in the top-right panel. However when I have Gnome 3 enabled nothing shows up in the top-right panel and the tray icon shows up in the (hidden) bottom panel, but the problem is only the first one of my 2 tray icons shows up - the other one is lost.
I'd like to ask, whether it is by design so, that on Gnome 3+Debian 7.8 there can be only one tray icon per application? Or is it some issue with Qt? I tried also Ubuntu 14.04 with Gnome 3 and there both tray icons showed up nicely in the top-right panel.
There doesn`t seem to be a tray icon for Rhythmbox. The only way to minimize it seems to be to the taskbar. I have used Rhythmbox. I am using a fully updated Debian Testing with Rhythmbox 0.12.3.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a bash script and I'm dropping a file on script launcher shortcut. Everything seems fine, only that after executing the script console window closes, so I can't see if some messages were produced during execution.
As I just recently switched from Windows, this kind of problem is solved there by adding 'pause' command in batch script, on which user has to press key and script will then continue (finish) or by launching through 'cmd /k' which makes console window persistent.
Googling I found about 'sleep' command and more appropriate for me 'read' command, so I did this:
Unfortunately, I can't see any effect of 'read' command as console windows again terminates after execution. Execution is successful BTW. So what's the catch?
I am currently running squeeze with the 2.6.32-trunk amd64 kernel.
If I close the laptop lid the screen will not turn back on and the laptop becomes unresponsive. The only way to get it functioning again is to hold the power button down until it dies.
I was trying to make my surround sound work and screwed things up. Anyways, one of them is the one with the vertical slider and the other one is the one with the horizontal slider. I want to get rid of the one with the vertical slider. How do I do this? (The one with the vertical slider is in the part where the "tray-ed" programs go). When I use my keyboard volume up and volume down buttons, I notice that the two controls respond APPROXIMATELY the same where one is slightly ahead of the other. If more information is needed, just ask.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI use Debian Jessie which includes a gnome shell version 3.14.1. The problem is that icons of some applications such as Viber or Starcal are not shown in the tray while the icons of other applications (e.g. Skype of Dropbox) are shown without problem.
By the way, the problem does not relate to loading, because all applications are loaded and a space is considered for each in the tray, but the problem is that for some of applications the pictures of their icons are not shown.
All qt4 apps tray icons are missing. Debian decided to drop sni-qt support and wmsystemtray is actually piece of shit. Also I can't even use ubuntu version of sni-qt, because it also needs to have patched version of qt4, but debian refused to include that patches. What should I do to make skype icon visible in kde5 tray?
View 14 Replies View RelatedOccasionally I get on lenny an empty system tray when logging in KDE, no right click menu, no icons. The previous session had been closed regularly. Is there a way to properly shutdown in the circumstances and to fix the problem?
(I don't know whether this has something to do with this but, in the past, on typing by mistake the print screen key, I got multiple instances of ksnapshot launched automatically and had to delete the directory under 'home' ~/.kde/share/config/session and the file ~/.kde/share/config/ksmserverrc to prevent this from repeating itself at every KDE login. The empty tray issue, however did not arise immediately after this, so it might be unrelated.)
