I am running ns2 in Solaris. I am running a simple tcl script which contains : exec nam out.nam & in the finish procedure. Upon running it using: ns simple.tcl, I am getting the following error:

How to set this display variable and to what value.

I have a Sony laptop CPU 2.80GHz HDD 60Gb and 512Mb RAM. I have defragmented.I downloaded Ubuntu 9 and burned to CD and all begins well as follows:
1 booting logo
2 Opening dialog screen
3 screen full of text(lasts about 5 seconds)
4 a screen full of mosaic patterns appears
5 a mauve screen flashes (with small rectangular patterns on it
6 that's it - I have to switch off after 10 minutes or more!
Sent for the CD from Canonical - same happens as above. A friendly suggestion offered was to try the alternate iso. I downloaded this and unzipped the files. These are scattered around the desktop in folders and files. How do I burn these to a disk?(get them together or just start with the"install" folder?)I'd like to persevere.Hello! I am having KDE and also gnome desktops. DOlphin file manager was working properly but suddenly now it stopped working in KDE. If I click the icon it just swings near the mouse for some time and nothing comes. Previously immediately after I click it used to come. But in gnome it still opens.

I have installed Debian on my computer but am having trouble setting up my wireless Internet. Under my network settings there's only one connection: Ethernet. how to create a new (wireless) connection.
Another thing is that I can't seem to open .deb files. The archive manager says that it's not supported. But I can't seem to find the dselect to open those files either.
One more question: how can I enter commands through the promp(t)? I've read all over the Internet that I can enter in commands, but I haven't found where or how.

Since lucid was installed, I can no longer access my floppy drive. I try creating an image on it and this happens:
$ dd if=a.img of=/dev/fd0
$ dd: opening `/dev/fd0': Permission denied
How do I get permission to do this? I'm the only user and am an administrator.

I'm on Fedora 14, and OpenOffice 3.3.0 takes a long time to open (about 30 seconds, sometimes less). It isn't a CPU or disk performance issue, it's just simply a very long delay before the program opens. It appears to be a frivolous network connection timing out. According to Wireshark, it tries to look up:
dulcimer.(none)
which fails, after which it tries to look up:
dulcimer.(none).mylitestream.com
(dulcimer is my hostname, and LiteStream is my ISP)
Is there a way to work around this bug in OpenOffice?

I ran a program that writes continuously from 1 every line. After some time I ran '/dev/null > temp' Problem1: bash: /dev/null: Permission denied (Yes, the permissions of /dev/null are correct ... crw-rw-rw-. I removed and created it again, but no change) I used 'cat temp' to see the contents and first few lines deleted (working correctly). Problem2: I can't open the file (with double click or with any graphical editor like gedit)
Apart from these problems, I have another question... Is there a way to trim a active log file to say 80% without affecting any logs that server might be writing.

Is there a way to imitate OS X behavior of opening applications in Linux?
For example: Assume that I already have Firefox open. In OS X it is very easy to open that window from console (it is the default, using open -a firefox).

I am running an Ubuntu(10.04) box and I am attempting to understand an error in a program.I don't have access to the source of this program, but I know it isn't working properly because it cannot find a particular file. I was wondering if it would be possible to monitor what file are accessed(more specifically denied access) by a process. My first idea was to breakpoint on fopen, but I didn't have any success.

In Nautilus - I can't change any of the file attributes again opening it as any of the users above. I used to be able to copy files over to the MP3 player but not the Sandisk but not I can't copy or do anything to the files on both.

Using ubuntu 9.10
If I'm in a terminal window, and I open a file by typing eg :
It opens as a blank document... I know it has text in it though!
I've tried with other files and also with nano so it's not just a problem with a particular file.
How do I view the current contents of the file so I can then edit it?
