View 4 Replies View Relatedmy notebook has an external monitor connected with 1280x1024 pixels.
As long as the resolution of the external monitor is set to 1024x768 I can watch video with VLC, mplayer etc.
But once I set its resolution to 1280x1024 all mediaplayer play only sound. This happens on the external screen and on the built-in screen of the notebook. The desktop is extended to the external screen.
I've just upgraded to Maverick and as the Me menu works with Empathy I started to use it as my default IM client.
But no matter what I do, it won't show my picture.
I tried resizing the picture to 96x96, I tried to convert it from jpg to png. I tried uninstalling the program with apt-get remove --purge. I tried also removing the ~/config/Empathy directory and all others related to the program and then reinstalling it but nothing seems to work.
I even made a video aboout it, maybe I'm doing something wrong: [URL]

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have an old Compaq Pro desktop with Ubuntu 8.04 installed. been using it without a major problem until four days ago. When I attempted to boot all I got was a screen with green vertical lines at the top and horizontal yellow, red, and orange lines below that. Since I recently had downloaded a new kernal I tried to use another kernal but that got the same result. I tried to boot with a live cd and finally got it to boot in low graphics mode. I have also tried to boot into the safe mode and tried the recovery option.got the following warning:xserver-xorg postinst warning: overwriteing possibly customized configuration file; backup in /etc/X11/xorg.conf .20100323151611I have no idea what that means or what I should do. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I would really hate to wait the 30 some odd days for 10.04 to come out.

Because I normally use it to see only one file (while multiple files are possible as well), was wondering if there was a way to tell dpkg to show couple of lines as output. I do see that there is a /etc/dpkg/dpkg.cfg file as well as /etc/dpkg/dpkg.cfg.d directory as well. Looking forward to info. on the same.

what to do in this situation? Prefferably it would be nice to view all the pictures as thumbnails.
When I hover over an open programme which is on the task bar I get a pop up, but instead of a picture of the actually programme I get a grey box like this

I need to find out why one server doesn't accept mail from my server. Mail isn't delivered and isn't bounced.Usualy it's easy to find in mail log files, but not in my new server. I just checked mail log files and discovered there is no information for each email sent from my server.
All log files:
mail.log
mail.err
mail.info
mail.warn
Last time I installed the ATI graphics driver on my PC, it was'nt working fine so I uninstalled that driver. I restarted the PC after uninstalling the driver but then, when PC boots and start running the services the screen just hangs and I don't get into the desktop.
I tried to run the xfs service using service xfs restart and also gdm service using service gdm restart, but in both the cases it shows that Unrecognized Service. So, I think it means that the package for xfs and gdm service is not available in my PC. Is that so?
I tried to get into the desktop by running startx but it gave the following error :-
Fatal Server Error: no screen found
consult the fedora project support at [URL] for help.
check the log file at "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" for additional information.

I noticed that when my server boots up, it's network interface on eth0 is always down and I always must run the 'ifup eth0' command in order to get it to work for some reason. I checked my configuration and it looks legit to me...
# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system # and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

Anyone know why my system is booting with out bringing up my eth0 interface? It's very annoying.
Don't know if this is a coincidence, but the other day we had a power cut and my laptop went off. When I tried to reboot it got to the ubuntu start up screen, but when it tries to get to the "desk top" screen it all goes blue and black flashes. I have XP and Vista on the same machine and these both start up ok
