Most of the time whenever I run dpkg -l I get cryptic output. For instance

Because I normally use it to see only one file (while multiple files are possible as well), was wondering if there was a way to tell dpkg to show couple of lines as output. I do see that there is a /etc/dpkg/dpkg.cfg file as well as /etc/dpkg/dpkg.cfg.d directory as well. Looking forward to info. on the same.
so i cannot install anything because update-info-dir file is missing from /var/lib/dpkg/info/ .. I've searched for the last day and a half for a way to fix this, but nothing. can't even update dpkg because of this. so how do I bypass or fix this so I can install stuff (this is a fresh install of ubuntu 10.04 lts Lucid Lynx).

I'm having some issues building deb packages. dh_make --createorig behaves as expected, but when I attempt to buld the package with dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot the build dies on a dpkg-source error.
somewhere along the line I disabled the description that appears below icons in all gnome application menus. I don't know how I did it, and I cannot seem to find the way to undo it I would like full descriptions under the icons in my menus. I tried System -> Preferences -> Appearance but could not find what I was looking for. I also tried System -> Preferences -> File Management. Neither seems to help me out. This is not an urgent problem, but an annoying one.

I also get this error when I want to install other .deb files using dpkg command " dpkg -i finename.deb. I did some research and it seams that I should install package on my system, but package file is .deb file and I can't install .deb file! What should I do to solve the problem??? Should I install any thing on my system to install .deb files??

Zenity does it with progress, but I didn't figure out if it's possible to do it with the list. I.e. for example, I want to monitor something, and update the dialog with new list periodically. Is it even possible? zenity can wait for data from stdin, but it just adds stuff to the list. May be there are some control sequences which clear the list in the dialog?
For example:
{ echo "Foo"; sleep 2; echo "Bar"; } | zenity --list --title='Dynamic list?' --text='Some data' --column='values'
How can I instead of adding Bar, replace the Foo with it?
Is there a command that display all network info. I'm looking for ip address, subnet mask, gateway, and dns. If there isn't a single command could someone please write me a shellscript that can do this?

I need to find out why one server doesn't accept mail from my server. Mail isn't delivered and isn't bounced.Usualy it's easy to find in mail log files, but not in my new server. I just checked mail log files and discovered there is no information for each email sent from my server.

I'm trying to build Qt using dpkg-buildpackage. Briefly, the problem I have consists in that using dpkg-buildpackage I get a linking error, that I don't get if I run configure and make directly, without the mediation of dpkg-buildpackage. One of the issues that we have is that, using dpkg-buildpackage, the configure command is not capable of finding the .qmake.cache file, so, the environment variables set in the configure script and saved in that file are not read, which causes that the apropiate linking parameters are not used. I guess that the problem is caused by a difference in the environment of execution of the configure command. I don't know in which way the dpkg-buildpackage is changing the environment so that it makes fail the building process.
I run 'make deb-x11' to start building process using dpkg-buildpackage: This is the main Makefile:
