View 4 RepliesI have an old Compaq Pro desktop with Ubuntu 8.04 installed. been using it without a major problem until four days ago. When I attempted to boot all I got was a screen with green vertical lines at the top and horizontal yellow, red, and orange lines below that. Since I recently had downloaded a new kernal I tried to use another kernal but that got the same result. I tried to boot with a live cd and finally got it to boot in low graphics mode. I have also tried to boot into the safe mode and tried the recovery option.got the following warning:xserver-xorg postinst warning: overwriteing possibly customized configuration file; backup in /etc/X11/xorg.conf .20100323151611I have no idea what that means or what I should do. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I would really hate to wait the 30 some odd days for 10.04 to come out.

I'm trying to use Pinta Image Editor but I cannot find an option to preview the image, in a viewable size, before I work on it.
what to do in this situation? Prefferably it would be nice to view all the pictures as thumbnails.
Is there a way to draw a picture that will show up in tomboy?
View 4 Replies View Relatedmy notebook has an external monitor connected with 1280x1024 pixels.
As long as the resolution of the external monitor is set to 1024x768 I can watch video with VLC, mplayer etc.
But once I set its resolution to 1280x1024 all mediaplayer play only sound. This happens on the external screen and on the built-in screen of the notebook. The desktop is extended to the external screen.
I've just upgraded to Maverick and as the Me menu works with Empathy I started to use it as my default IM client.
But no matter what I do, it won't show my picture.
I tried resizing the picture to 96x96, I tried to convert it from jpg to png. I tried uninstalling the program with apt-get remove --purge. I tried also removing the ~/config/Empathy directory and all others related to the program and then reinstalling it but nothing seems to work.
I even made a video aboout it, maybe I'm doing something wrong: [URL]
I have a 1080p video card installed via PCIe and can't seem to get sound to work on my big screen tv unless i use a audio jack and stereo.

I hear no sound from any source, neither via HDMI, nor via a separate sound cable connected to the sound connector on the back of the computer nor via the head phone jack on the front.

View 4 Replies View RelatedSo some videos works correctly played in VLC (1.1.9), but some doesn't.For instance I tried to play a VMW file (the video codec for that video in particular is : Windows Media Video VC1 (WVC1) ).The file plays with sound, but the picture is just black so no video picture. Now I have the regular codec package installed and in most cases everything works fine, but for instance this video doesn't and there have been similar cases in the past aswell.

I have checked a lot of places, but could not find anything that works. PulseAudio Volume Control recognizes it, but I cannot get any sound out. I was using Audacity to test this. I can get my external mic to work in Audacity. When I change the options in Audacity and pick the webcam mic as input, I get no sound input.

I am having problems: videos have sound, but no picture.I'm using a Gigabyte motherboard with integrated ATI video, and I've read before that XBMC (and Ubuntu in general) don't like ATI too much. Is there any hope left to make XBMC work?I've tried the following:1. Fresh Ubuntu installation, default ATI drivers. Result: when starting a video, audio is okay, but no video. Also, visibly slow graphics even while navigating XBMC menus
2. Installed ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX driver via System->Hardware drivers. Result: significantly accelerated menu navigation, but no video still. Note: having no problems watching videos via VLC or Totem Movie Player (after downloading proper codecs)3. Fresh Ubuntu installation, then downloaded and installed ATI's proprietary Linux drivers from ATI's site (ati-driver-installer-10-7-x86.x86_64.run). Result: yippee, I see some video, but wait: no color!! (all videos are in sepia-like mode)
4. Followed these instructions to install the unofficial ATI drivers. I'm trying to use a webtv subscribtion on ubuntu kermic, however it seems that that vlc dosnt support wmap yet, so i'm not getting any sounds on it. Does anyone have a clue on how to get this fixed, or if its even possible to get it fixed? I've tried searching guides for it without anyluck. And when i'm trying to set it to use gmplayer or totem it dosn't work either, mplayer and totem dosnt get either picture or sound.

speaker-test -D plughw:0,7 -c 2 /dev/urandom
I have the following line in /etc/pulse/default.pa
load-module module-alsa-sink device=plughw:0,7
But when i play any applications i hear no sound. For example "mplayer zion.mp3" results in silence.
When using pavucontrol, i see the sound bar moving for the hdmi hardware device. But i still hear nothing.
Does anyone know what could be wrong?
Can someone provide me with the exact instructions I need to backtrace pulseaudio? I have a bug that a developer is asking me to do a backtrace and the instructions on the ubuntu site aren't very good. I tried exactly what it said and my problem is that it says to "run the program under gdb by doing
gdb pulseaudio 2>&1 | tee ~/gdb-pulseaudio.txt
unfortunately pulseaudio isn't actually starting when I do this (I kill the program before I do this command, I also add the appropriate text file so pulse doesn't auto restart). Not sure what's going on but I'd appreciate any help as I can't get sound out of HDMI (I get it but it dies out fast).
For my mythtv/router box I'm trying to get the sound working trough hdmi as well as over the analog out. Because the HDMI is located on the mainboard and has something to do with the video driver I downloaded and installed the following:

However the output aplay -l is showing me(I got hdmi sound working on my laptop) isn't the same as on my laptop, it does not show the hdmi "sound card"

When I hover over an open programme which is on the task bar I get a pop up, but instead of a picture of the actually programme I get a grey box like this
View 3 Replies View Relatedi had just edited a picture in digikam that was going to be my new desktop wallpaper.when i went into system/preferences/appearance to make the new change it would not show the new picture that i had just edited as a choice to change my new wallpaper to. then i tried closing the appearance box and it would not close.then i shut down and restarted and when i bring up the appearance box it does not let me click on anything within.also can't close it.seems like other applications are working normally.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI can not get any sound through my HDMI cable. Sound through my headphones works fine. But when I want sound to go through the HDMI and play on the monitor, there is no sound.
The HDMI cable is connected to my Radeon R9 270X graphics card.
My OS version is 8.1.
It works on Windows 8.1, so it is definitely an operating system problem.
I'm on Jessie, and use KDE.
Sound keeps coming from laptop's speakers, even when HDMI is connected to an external TV.
I've tried to fix this issue using both Pulse Audio Volume Control and KDE's System Settings -> Multimedia -> Audio and Video Settings. No luck. I've read several topics around, but there are plenty of variables to consider.

Trying to put up my HTPC with Ubuntu 9.10 but I cant get any sound to work. Im using a HDMI cable between the pc and TV. Computer is an Asrock ION HT/BD 330. Also running a 64 bit version of Ubuntu. I have an HP 8510w laptop and I run ubuntu 10.04 out of an external harddrive.
I have no problem getting video over hdmi using the latest proprietary nvidia drivers however I cannot get sound through the HDMI cable.
I have read around without being able to find a solution.
Running "aplay -l" shows only my intel sound card and also there is no hdmi sound interface in the sound preferences (Only the normal output interface).
I am using the latest proprietary nvidia drivers (Believe it to be 1.95) and the graphics card is a Quadro FX 570.
how I can get sound out to work via the hdmi cable?
