Slackware :: Xfig Aborts Because "no Fontset Found"Unable To Load Any Usable Fontset?
May 30, 2011
I'm on slackware64-current. When I start xfig, it issues a warning "Unable to load any usable fontset". Then, it exits/aborts as soon as I try to browse the library (Shift-l, select a library, bang).Couldn't find much via google about the message. Does it work on your slack current?
$ xfig

that's what i get on one of my 2 new lucid boxen when i try to run twm (1:1.0.4-2ubuntu2) inside vnc4server 4.1.1+xorg4.3.0-37ubuntu2). any idea how to fix this? the xfonts packages are installed, and no problem with twm on the console. and no problem with twm inside vnc4server on the other lucid box. both were installed via netboot (minimal), both were fleshed out with apt-get lubuntu-desktop, though there were presumably inconsequential differences, on the one that works fine:
Code:
apt-get install twm
apt-get install vnc4server xvnc4viewer
apt-get install lxde-core
apt-get install lubuntu-desktop

I have F14 x86_64 installation on my laptop. I once used latex vary well. After recent update of the system, there seems to be a latex font problem. When I ran xdvi, the dvi window flashed once and disappeared immediately.
The error in the terminal is:
Code:
$ xdvi ms
Warning: Missing charsets in String to FontSet conversion
Warning: Unable to load any usable fontset
Error: Aborting: no fontset found
I have xorg-x11-font-utils, xorg-x11-fonts-misc, xorg-x11-fonts-ISO8859-1-75dpi, and xorg-x11-fonts-ISO8859-1-100dpi installed. I then ran:
Code:
# yum install xorg-x11-fonts-ISO8859*
to install some extra fonts. But the problem remained. What shall I do?

I'm totally new to linux and a more experienced friend advised me to install slackware if I want to get the best possible understanding of how linux works. I've installed slackware but having logged in as root, when I type the command "startx" to load the GUI I get this error message:

My system is a Lenovo B500 All-In-One, with an Nvidia GTS 250M video card. nv seems to work okay, but I cannot get the desktop to load with the nvidia driver (nvidia-current, from the repository). I've been hacking away at this for a week and a half with no results. Every time I try to boot with the nvidia driver, the splash screen comes up for a second, the screen flashes a couple times between a "static" screen and tty2, then the screen seems to go to a test mode, where it flashes a series of solid colors indefinitely. Looking at /var/log/Xorg.0.log, I see the following:
Code:
(II) May 08 19:06:53 NVIDIA(0): Support for GLX with the Damage and Composite X extensions is
(II) May 08 19:06:53 NVIDIA(0): enabled.
(WW) May 08 19:06:54 NVIDIA(0): Failed to enable display hotplug notification

Ever since I have upgraded form fc 11 to 14, I cannot login using the KDE desktop, I am forced to use gnome. The problem with that is that KDE apps are not running well, slow and often crashing, when I try to use them under gnome.
Symptoms.
1. Attempting to log in as any user with either KDE or KDE failsafe selected brings up the KDE splash screen, the hard drive icon, and occasionally the wrench icon.. a long pause and then back to the login screen.
2. I have these problem described in other Linux forums and have attempted to implement their recommendations
2.1 Deleted the .kde and other directories associated with KDE, reinstalled KDE.
2.2 Checked the permissions on all the requisite files and directories to ensure that they were good.
2.4 Looked through endless log files for ANY clues.. none
3. KDE applications, like ocular, take about a minute to start up, respond very slowly and eventually stop responding. Gnome applications work normally.

I am trying to setup 2-factor authentication for SSH with PAM. Its working well, but if the password is incorrect, it does not ask for validation code, but rather asks for the password again. Any way not to warn about an incorrect password?

An a stable FC13 system, after resolving deps and downloading rpms, 'yum update' aborts with this single error message:Transaction Check Error:installing package kernel-PAE-2.6.33.5-124.fc13.i686 needs 801KB on the /boot filesystem.Silly thing is, I have at least 52MB available on /boot.An important datapoint is that I resized the boot partition since the initial install from 64MB to 128MB, which makes me think perhaps yum or anaconda recorded the original partition size, and is not looking at the current (correct) size of /boot.

Slackware 13 didn't install correctly, and I accidentally installed it on my main hard drive on my Toshiba laptop, now it has the MBR all jacked up. I can't boot from CD. If my external usb HD is formatted in a linux format, I have the possibility to boot from that device, but as soon as I load another linux distro, such as ubuntu or pardus, it won't load, and actually disappears from my boot menu. Slackware is dead it runs into a Kernel problem and locks up and then i'm forced to reboot.

I played with awn for a few days on xfce. I came back to xfce4-panel. Now, every time I startx, I've got the error popup: Starting avant-window-navigator. Warning: Screen isn't composited. run compiz or another compositing manager.
I looked in the .xinitrc and can't seem to find any mention of awn or avant. How could I stop it from trying to load. I could tick "Don't show this message again", but it doesn't solve the problem. I could also uninstall awn, but I'd rather solve it properly.

None of the colors are working so I can't tell what it a directory and what isn't. When I hit the up arrow I just get : ^[[A instead of my last statement.
Left arrow: ^[[D
Right arrow: ^[[C

I've installed Slackware 12.2 on a 12 year old desktop. It is the only OS on the machine. When I press the Power button it stops at Slackware's splash screen asking me to choose an OS, even tho' there is only one to choose from. I installed LILO to the MBR and that is also listed there as a possibility.
Is there a way to set Linux so it will simply load automatically?

The program "qtconfig" does not load saved config on startup.
I just installed slackware-current from today's update (mirrored from ftp.slackware.com). The program "qtconfig" seems to have saved my changes to "~/.config/Trolltech.conf". However, after restarting qtconfig all options become the defaults.
I verified this in both the C locale and a UTF-8 locale.
Another computer of mine has a -current system from a few months ago and doesn't have this problem.

I'm curious as to why some things are not happening at boot time (i end up having to manually load them).
In /etc/rc.d/rc.modules (near the bottom) i have set "CPUFREQ=on" and commented out any modules not specific to my hardware.
I have left this one uncommented:
Code:
And below the "### CPU frequency scaling policies:" i have;
Code:
uncommented. My scaling governor is set to:
Code:
Now whenever i reboot my machine `lsmod` is not showing any of either powernow-k8 or cpufreq* related modules.
I know i could use /etc/rc.d/rc.local with these:
Code:
But seems to defeat the purpose of rc.modules, any idea why they are not being loaded at boot... ?
Code:

How do I modify lilo.conf to add Ubuntu Kernel and Image?

I swore I wouldn't do it again, but I did it anyway and installed 'current,' but I'm using Xfce not KDE. Everything was working very well, until I tried to print this morning. From Okular it would load the paper then stop and not print. From OpenOffice it would load and print, but the output was garbage.
Finally, I moved copies of what needed to be printed to the Xp partition, booted to Xp, and documents printed out just fine. As noted I'm running Slackware64 'current' with the latest versions of Cups and Hplip. The printer is a HP 940c. Hplip reports everything is fine, as does CUPS when running it in a browser (localhost:631).

I am new to linux, am attempting to abandon microsoft because after 30 years I have had enough of being jerked around by them. I have used yast to install the components of Postgresql and pgAccess, including language support for Tcl/Tk. Starting the postgresql server is successful.
I would like to use pgAccess as a front end to the server/databases. However, nothing I do seems to make pgAccess available. I can't invoke it and can't find it on a menu anywhere. In searching forums on this issue they all discuss compiling postgresql and pgAccess on the local machine, no one talks about how to use pgaccess whose installation was managed by a gui. Do I need to start over, removing everything I installed with yast, and go with the command line installs and compiles, or can I use what yast installed?

I'm looking for an app that will provide a large (full screen and clear) display countdown clock, basically so I can use my laptop in public to show how much time remains in a basketball quarter. I'm the official timer. If it counts up like in soccer rather than down, that's fine too. If the app can also show the score, that would be great, but it is not a requirement. We don't use a shot clock, so that is not required either.
