Fedora Networking :: Wpa_gui Can't Connect To Wpa_supplicant
Apr 20, 2010When I run wpa_gui I get a "Failed to open control connection to wpa_supplicant." message and an endless stream of "PING failed - trying to reconnect". I'm sure wpa_supplicant service is running, it also seems to be working correctly (program logs show activity when I connect to a wpa secured network via gnome network manager).
The location that ctrl_interface (in /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf) points to (/var/run/wpa_supplicant) is an empty folder. I'm able to connect to a simple WPA network at home, but the one at my university needs special configuration and I couldn't get it to work by editing the .conf file. That's why I need the gui. My network card is Atheros Communications Inc. AR928X Wireless Network Adapter, the driver is ath9k.

Jun 3, 2010My brother is thinking of installing Slackware64 13.1 on his laptop. He was wondering though how to configure his wireless card. How would he do this? He is using an Intel wireless card, but I am unsure of the exact model. Another question is would Wicd do this automatically or do you still have to use either iwconfig or wpa_supplicant and edit the corresponding config files?

Feb 25, 2011I am running -current on an ASUS eeePC 1000HE. Wireless was working fine up until the time I applied the latest changes from the Slack -current tree, which upgraded wpa_supplicant. Now, no networks are detected.
I looked at some related threads here and did some basic checking: neither the eth1 nor wlan0 interfaces show up in iwconfig or ifconfig output. Am afraid I am still a wireless dunderhead and don't know where to start troubleshooting this issue.

Feb 24, 2011dd is wiping part of the hard drive( 270GB partition ) with /dev/urandom for quite some hours, is there anyway to check the proccess? like speed of the process etc., I read someone doing that with another drive while having access to other terminal because of the system, but since this is directly from the install dvd, I've no clue if there's anyway to do that or not. I'm asking that mainly because:
1) I prefer run things with some kind of verbose mode
2) I accentaly opened the dvd driver (yes I know, but I forgot the install dvd was inside of it), but I closed it right after it, no errors, but it may have stopped working and has just the _ clicking?

Jul 5, 2010I have just upgraded to Lucid on Ubuntu. I am a long time Pidgin user. I tried using Empathy with Gwibber, but I can't get Gwibber to update my IM status(es) in Empathy, so I want to go back to using Pidgin. (Additionally, I can't get Skype to work with Empathy.)I installed pidgin-microblog and pidgin-mbpurple, and they allow me to view my Twitter feed in Pidgin and update my Twitter status in Pidgin. However, in Karmic, I was also able to specify certain "status availabilities" (one named "Twitter-Available" and one named "Twitter-Away", for instance) to have the IM status message for these statuses become populated with my Twitter feed. This capability seems missing in pidgin-mbpurple in Lucid (and it seems to be the only thing missing from Karmic).
Is there a way to have pidgin-mbpurple update certain "status availabilities" in Lucid (and I'm just missing something) or is this no longer possible?Equivalently, is it possible to have Gwibber update my status message in Empathy? (I just want to be able to update my status once on one of my three computers - and have it propagate to all my other accounts (IM and social networking) and computers).
Ubuntu :: Remove Gwibber Status Indicator / Gwibber Status In The Panel While Keeping The Shutdown Button?
Mar 16, 2011After a fresh installation of Ubuntu 10.10 I uninstalled empathy (im using skype). The empathy menu in the evolution indicator was gone after that.I also uninstalled gwibber. But the gwibber status indicator remains within the about-me panel... Uninstalling the gwibber package also removes the me-menu which I want to keep actually. Especially the shutdown/restart... part of it. See attachment.I know there is a shutdown panel-app...but its butt-ugly and it doesnt allow to logon/off.
In another thread I read that the gwibber status shouldnt be there if no account for it is configured... which it is not... I do use ubuntu-one though which is in the same menu... I saw that this issue was addressed at some bug report before, but not fixed yet...
Does anybody know a good workaround to get rid of the gwibber status in the panel while keeping the about me and the shutdown button?
Debian :: Using Static IPs With Wpa_supplicant?
Aug 22, 2009Debian doesn't seem to handle the association between wpa_supplicant.conf records, and /etc/network/interfaces. This is in wpa_supplicant.conf:

What's happening is there are two gray circles as the wifi attempts to connect. The first one turns green, but it never completes the next step. The syslog shows that it's waiting for the (nonexistent) DHCP server to respond. If I turn on DHCP, the connection completes, but the routing is messed up (because at that point it actually tries to use the static IP from /etc/network/interfaces). So it seems to associate eventually, but it's way too late. I need it to associate soon enough to know not to attempt DHCPDISCOVER.

the "pre-shared key may be incorrect" I have rechecked the key twice and it is correct (actually it cannot be wrong because they file was copied from a working system). I get no error when connecting but iwconfig tells me "Access Point: Not-Associated".Because of the "Device or resource busy" I tried a "lsof | grep -i wlan" but there are no results.

Feb 20, 2011if the NetworkManager uses wpa_supplicant? I normally dont use NetworkManager and decided to try it. I started it and tried it out and it works with WEP and WPA! I cant figure out why using the iwconfig command is not working by itself for WEP. WPA working with NetworkManager is just a bonus though.

Mar 30, 2011I'm working on a RHEL 6 base image for virtualization and I'm trying to pare down the things that we don't need. Considering none of the virtual servers will have wireless networking, I figured it'd be good to kill that wpa_supplicant process. even with the wpa_supplicant service off, NetworkManager seems to start it right back up. There isn't any wireless devices configured, so I don't know why it does this. I can't even kill the process, it starts back up immediately. Is there something in either the Network Manager or wpa_supplicant config files that would disable it permanently?

Feb 13, 2011I apologize if there's a solution to this somewhere on the forum, but I searched around on google for several hours before posting this, so I assure you, I'm not trying to waste your time.Here's the deal. I have a file/print server running wpa_supplicant on interface wlan0 via ndiswrapper. Its wireless because the location I need the printer in is really inconvenient to have to run wires to, or I wouldn't have this problem.The box is running ubuntu server 10.10, with only ndiswrapper and the associated utils and wpa_supplicant installed in addition to the default packages required for file/print/web serving. (there may be a few trivial packages like Vim that should have no effect whatsoever.)Basically, wpa_supplicant associates fine with the AP, but I can't get any elegant way of getting a IP address with it, DHCP or static makes no difference. My current fix is my rc.local file has:

May 13, 2010i believe it is a wpa_supplicant problem. running ubuntu 10.04 on a toshiba netbook. i have my account which cannot connect to internet, wicd returns an error that it cannot obtain ip address. cannot even connect to a unesecure network for that matter. if i switch users to another user and do the quick switch users i can get internet then i switched back to my main account and here i am postings. how do i begin to hunt down the problem logs, settings how do some of you begin to hunt down the cause of this and where it would be located.

Sep 15, 2010First- clean installation of Ubuntu 10.04, with default network manager installed, I had a taskbar icon, and it could see the available wireless networks, could not connect to them, even the ones with no security. Purged all network manager files suggested in various threads here, Installed wicd- it could see all available networks, could connect to unsecured networks, but not to my own secured network. Password was correct in the wicd/configurations file. Removed wicd, and reinstalled network manager from synaptic. I have to network manager applet. When I try to add it to the notification area with alt-f2, applet-nm, I get a brief flash of something in the notification area, but no applet.
System=>Preferences=>network connections shows no wireless connections, but I'm obviously connected to something (probably my neighbors unsecured network) since I"m reaching this webpage. I tried to run sudo wpa_cli from the terminal to see what network the computer is connected to, and it gives me this error:

Aug 1, 2011I have tried different methods to auto start wpa_supplicant at boot on Ubuntu Lucid server on a laptop which can't be connected to Ethernet.
The only thing that worked is adding the wpa_supplicant command before exit0 in rc.local. It solve my problem of wpa_supplicant auto start and annoyance on not be able to ssh before local login. But the screen stuck at Ubuntu Logo. How can i get pass Ubuntu logo screen to regular tty or xbmc in future?
