OpenSUSE Network :: Can't Connect To WPA Secure Routers.

I can connect to unsecure routers, but not to any secure routers. NetworkManager doesn't seem to work and neither does anything else I try. I have tried with WPA supplicant but to be honest I have not a clue what to do. I have an Atheros ar5009 card and I'm currently using the ath9k module. Lan works just fine. But my wireless doesn't.

Ubuntu Networking :: Cannot Connect To Secure Wireless Network

Jan 4, 2010

I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop on which I recently installed Ubuntu 9.10. Most things work, but the wireless will not connect to my home wireless network (a Linksys WRT54G). (Cannot see any other WIFI antennas from here, so I don't know if it works on other networks). Ubuntu says I have an Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG, Kernel Driver ipw2200.

When I try to look for a wireless network, Ubuntu doesn't see any. (Every other computer in the house does, Macs and PCs). I tried Connect to Hidden Wireless Network > New > and filled in the name and the WEP password that the Linksys gave me.When I select Connect to Hidden Wireless Network and select the network that I entered all the information for, the Connect button is always grayed out.

Ubuntu Networking :: Setup OpenVPN In Order To Connect Back To Home Network While Traveling For Secure Browsing?

Apr 3, 2010

I'm trying to setup OpenVPN in order to connect back to my home network while traveling for secure browsing and such. However, before I can even start trying to set that up I tried to see if I could open port check my computer through the net. And I'm having a hard time doing that.

As far as I can tell, here are my roadblocks:
1. Is ISP (Qwest) blocking my ports?
2. Is my modem doing the proper port forwarding and firewall?
3. Is my router doing the same?
4. Is my firewall on the computer allowing the request?

To minimize sources of error, I've turned off my local and router firewall and setup my router to forward ports. I'm not to familiar with my modem, but I'm pretty sure that the firewall is turned off by default and I think I've done port-forwarding correctly. But still no success when doing an open port check. At this point I don't know how to diagnose the problem.

Fedora Networking :: Wpa_gui Can't Connect To Wpa_supplicant

Apr 20, 2010

When I run wpa_gui I get a "Failed to open control connection to wpa_supplicant." message and an endless stream of "PING failed - trying to reconnect". I'm sure wpa_supplicant service is running, it also seems to be working correctly (program logs show activity when I connect to a wpa secured network via gnome network manager).

The location that ctrl_interface (in /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf) points to (/var/run/wpa_supplicant) is an empty folder. I'm able to connect to a simple WPA network at home, but the one at my university needs special configuration and I couldn't get it to work by editing the .conf file. That's why I need the gui. My network card is Atheros Communications Inc. AR928X Wireless Network Adapter, the driver is ath9k.

General :: Proxy Connect To Secure Computer W Key?

Nov 25, 2010

I've been searching for the exact set of tools to accomplish what I need. I was once at a LANparty. I used my webmail account and I think someone stole my password. I realized that the LAN used hubs instead of switches.

So next time, I thought I could run a server at home, which would allow me to connect with SSL (??). Then I would be able to connect to whatever website knowing that I was secure between myself and my home computer. I guess I would need to have a key before a secure connection could be made. Otherwise a "man in the middle" kind of exchange could take place.

So I guess I would need a VPN between myself and my home computer. Then my home computer would act as a proxy to allow me to surf securely. I'm not sure if these are the correct terms to use. Does anyone know what type of server I'm looking for?

Ubuntu Networking :: NM Connects - No Icon / Choice Of Wireless - Error Could Not Connect To Wpa_supplicant

Sep 15, 2010

First- clean installation of Ubuntu 10.04, with default network manager installed, I had a taskbar icon, and it could see the available wireless networks, could not connect to them, even the ones with no security. Purged all network manager files suggested in various threads here, Installed wicd- it could see all available networks, could connect to unsecured networks, but not to my own secured network. Password was correct in the wicd/configurations file. Removed wicd, and reinstalled network manager from synaptic. I have to network manager applet. When I try to add it to the notification area with alt-f2, applet-nm, I get a brief flash of something in the notification area, but no applet.

System=>Preferences=>network connections shows no wireless connections, but I'm obviously connected to something (probably my neighbors unsecured network) since I"m reaching this webpage. I tried to run sudo wpa_cli from the terminal to see what network the computer is connected to, and it gives me this error:

Quote:
Could not connect to wpa_supplicant - re-trying

I was originally going to setup ssh on my home computer but then realized that I wouldn't be able to get my desktop this way.At work, we use windows remote desktop connection to log into other computers within our network, but I'm planning on asking my manager if I'm allowed to login to my home computer. If he accepts, I need a method to actually make it happen.I looked at FreeNX which seemed awesome but it doesn't seem to have windows support. To an extent that I would like to only allow my work IP to be allowed to even try an login. The bridge to cross here is the fact that I'm connecting from windows.

Ubuntu Networking :: Connect To Uni Secure Access Vpn

Aug 26, 2010

I used to be able to connect to my uni secure access vpn by navigating to the appropriate page, logging in and clicking "start" by "Network Connect" etc. etc.
After an update to firefox it had been failing, giving me a "session timeout" MsgBox. I have tried clearing history etc and reinstalling firefox. I have also tried different browsers with no success.

So, I have since upgraded to 9.10 and now I get "Setup Failed, Sorry" in the bottom left of the screen (where "Done" is displayed once a page has loaded)...

I am now trying a different approach. I have downloaded ncui-6.5R2.i386.rpm and unpacked it fine. I have tried running it, without success and have also run the diagnostic - I will post results below:

When I try and run ./ncsvc I get the following:

Code:
ncsvc> Failed to setuid to root. Error 1: Operation not permitted

So I did a sudo ./ncsvc , which gives:

Code:
mkdir(/root/.juniper_networks) failed: Permission denied

I am pretty sure that my password above is correct - I re-tried it and got the same message... I can definitely do, e.g., sudo apt-get update fine.

I then ran all of the tests available in ncdiag (./ncdiag -A) which gave the following info which might be useful

Code:
NC Diagnostics for Linux.
Version 1.0.

Ubuntu Security :: Can't Connect To Netdisk Space From Off-campus Using The Secure WebDAV Bookmark

Jan 13, 2010

My workplace recently switched to Active Directory for our netdisk space (I work at a University in the US). The "only way" (recommended) by our IT department is to use a cifs protocol. I've had absolutely no luck with that at all. However, it turns out that there is secure WebDAV protocol setup which works well on campus. If I'm off campus I have to connect via a VPN connection; our school uses Cisco Anyconnect 2.3.0254. It works well for me to connect to a printer, etc on campus.

Here's my problem: I can't connect to my netdisk space from off-campus using the Secure WebDAV bookmark that was working oncampus, even when I am connected via the VPN connection. I am using UFW. Is there a port I need to open up, or am I missing something else?

Ubuntu Networking :: Getting On My Secure Network?

Apr 20, 2011

I am running Maverick (desktop edition - don't like the netbook remix) on my Acer Aspire One AO532h. I can deal with not being able to print, but not being able to get on my secure wireless network is getting to be a bother.I have AT&T DSL and am using an AT&T 2701HG-B 2Wire Wireless Gateway DSL Router Modem. If I had known that this particular 2Wire router-modem was so crappy, I'd have bought my own and tried wrestling around with that.I recently secured my wireless network and had to change the encryption from WEP to WPA so my iPad could get on it. Both my Mac desktops, the iPad, and an old Windows laptop are working fine, but not my Acer (or my XBox, for that matter). I've searched and searched for a solution and called AT&T (no Linux support :), all to no avail.

When I try to connect to my network, it goes and goes and either says that it can't connect, or shows that I'm connected, but with no signal/net capability.

OpenSUSE Network :: Browsing Secure Sites Is Very Slow

May 21, 2011

I've recently installed openSUSE 11.4 (64 bit) on my system and am experiencing severe performance issues with websites using https (any site using https). Page loads over https take anywhere between 30 seconds to 2 minutes. It's the same issue posted here Secure sites load slow or not at all -- there was no confirmed solution.

- My router/hardware configuration has not changed in a long time and I've run Ubuntu, Arch Linux, and Windows XP on the same machine within the last year and have not had any issues.
- I also have a laptop running Arch Linux (kernel 2.6.38) and this problem does not occur using Firefox 4 or Chrome. To add to the madness this problem occurs while running Firefox 4 inside a Windows 7 guest via virtual box, but NOT while running IE 8 inside the same guest.
- This issue occurs using Firefox 4, Chromium, Opera, Konqueror, and Arora.
- I've disabled ipv6 in Firefox via about:config.
- I've disabled ipv6 in yast and have attempted to use both the "ifup" and "networkmanager" options.
- I am not using a proxy server.
- I've attempted the fix posted in the Ubuntu forums for a similar problem [ubuntu] [SOLVED] Banking Site is very slow.

Ubuntu Servers :: Setting Up Secure FTP On Internal Network

Mar 8, 2010

I'm running Ubuntu Server 9.10 and I'm looking to setup an FTP server. I have SSH running beautifully and it's accessible from any computer whether it be inside the network or coming in from the internet (provided you have the administrator username and password ). I've tried Proftpd and vsftpd and have failed miserably so far. Which FTP server application do you think I should go with and how could I go about setting it up through my SSH connection?

My current setup is this:
- Ubuntu Server 9.10 with Fixed IP of 192.168.1.100
- 500GB Hard Drive
- SDA1 = 512MB ext2 /boot
- SDA2 = 2GB swap
- SDA3 = 20GB ext4 /
- SDA5 = 438GB ext4 /home
- One User (Username = administrator)
- Full SSH Capabilities
- IP Address to DNS provided by www.dyndns.org
- WRT120N Router with Remote Access and Port 22 Open

I basically want to set up a secure FTP server that anyone on the internal network can access as well as anyone from the internet (as long as they have a username and password). I want to setup a username and password for each user so that they all have read/write access to the same folder in my /home partition (I'll call it FTPSHARE).

Security :: Ways To Secure Sendmail Or Secure Alternatives To Send Mail

Dec 1, 2010

I'm an Oracle DBA and started working for my current employer about 4 months ago. This past weekend an alert re: FS space brought my attention to /var/spool/clientmqueue (full of mail re: cron jobs) and the fact that sendmail is not running on our Linux servers.I'm told that the IT security team deemed sendmail too vulnerable so we don't run it.Aside from FS filling up and missing notification of issues with crontab entries, I'm concerned that we may be missing notification of potential issues. In other Unix/Linux environments I've seen emails from the print daemon when it experienced problems with specific jobs.

Are there other Linux facilities aside from cron and lpd that use email to advise the users of possible issues? Are there ways to secure sendmail or secure alternatives to sendmail? My primary need/desire is to make sure that emails regarding issues on the server get to the appropriate users. Secondary goal would be to have the ability to use mailx to send mail out. There is No need/desire to receive mail from outside.

Ubuntu Networking :: Connecting To A Secure Wireless Network (WPA Or WPA2)

Sep 1, 2011

In setting up wireless connections I have ran into an array of problems. First, when I installed the new OS on my laptop I had to get the correct drivers and firmware for it to display and connect to any connections, had no problem here connecting to a secure wireless network (WPA or WPA2). I then installed Ubuntu on my desktop and had to find the correct driver for the Netgear WNDA3100v2 USB adapter, got it all installed with the Windows Wireless Drivers tool or w/e it is. This made all the available connections come up. I tried connecting with the WPA password I was given for the network and will not connect.

I had the guy managing the network change the one I connect to, to a WEP Passphrase Shared Key thinking this would solve my issue, still nothing. And also in doing so, now my laptop will not connect to the wireless network using the Passphrase. I do not want to go back to Windows, and I will be getting rid of my Lan connection soon so i need a solution to fix this wireless connection problem.

General :: Can't Connect To Network / Resolve This?

Jan 5, 2011

I have a problem:

I am on Debian. I configured my nic with a static ip (192.168.1.56).

When I try to connect to a network, initially with ifconfig eth2 I get (correctly):

eth2 inet addr:192.168.1.56 ....
inet6 addr: fe80:221:ff:fe96:4598/64

but after a few seconds the 192.168.1.56 disappears and after some other seconds disappears the inet6 address too.
When I press in the nm-applet it requires me the password but in the meantime it try to connect.

At uni, the connection is a DHCP one. It works for the first few seconds but after it doesn't.

Any possible solution?

General :: Network - Sometimes Can Connect To The Internet And Sometimes Cannot ?

Jan 18, 2010

When using Fedora in VMWare, sometimes I can connect to the internet and sometimes I cannot. I do nothing differently on different days. I restart the machine and / or shut the machine down at the end of the day. When the machine starts back up the next time, I might have an internet connection or I might not have an internet connection. The 2 computer symbol that appears in the top will also sometimes be displayed. If I have that icon and click on it, it will display connections I can use including a sys one. I have a bridged connection chosen in VMWare also. Furthermore, when I click on the System -> Administration -> Network Device Control, 'eth0' is listed and it is listed as 'active'.

Yesterday I could ping out to a specific ip address on our network ( 192.168.1.xxx ). Now, I cannot ping that same ip address. I receive an error 'Destination host unreachable'.

How can I make it so that I have the internet connection every time I start up the machine? What do I need to check as far as the internet connection goes and the network connection?
