Ubuntu Networking :: Wpa_supplicant Authentication Timed Out?
Sep 20, 2010
for weeks now I have the following problem: I am not able to connect to my wireless home network for most of the time. I am using Ubuntu 10.04; an Intel Wifi AGN4965 card and as driver "iwlagn". Maybe the solution lies within these messages (from daemon.log):
Sep 20 22:03:35 ubuntu NetworkManager: <info> starting...
Sep 20 22:03:35 ubuntu avahi-daemon[1130]: Found user 'avahi' (UID 104) and group 'avahi' (GID 111).

right now im using the nm-applet but i dont like it. it produces lags. i think the periodical ssid/broadcast check might be the cause :/it lags every minute or so...in games and skype it is very annoying! if there is a possibily to disable these scans in nm-applet it would be fine too.for the moment im "using" this wpa_supplicant config:
Code:
ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant
eapol_version=1

I've got my laptop working with my UNI's rather complex wifi setup.
I need to get access to my wpa_supplicant file so i can use it with my nook and a few other devices that i need to get wifi access.
Network manager, i know, does all the wpa stuff dynamically and through scripts, so is there any way that i can get network manager to generate my wpa_supplicant config?

I am trying to get a wlan connection using my new Wlan-Stick. It has a Atheros ar9271 chipset.
Code:
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0cf3:1006 Atheros Communications, Inc. TP-Link TL-WN422G v2 802.11g [Atheros AR9271]
Modules ath9k_htc and ath9k_htc_common are loaded. I can scan for network using iwlist or airodump and get the whole lists of networks. I've copied the config file I use with wpa_supplicant from a working system:
Code:
network={
ssid="Pasta"
scan_ssid=1
key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
[code]....
But I am not able to successfully connect:
Code:
[vortexbox.localdomain ~]# wpa_supplicant -i wlan0 -c wpa.test.conf -Dwext
ioctl[SIOCGIWSCAN]: Resource temporarily unavailable
ioctl[SIOCSIWSCAN]: Device or resource busy
[code]....
the "pre-shared key may be incorrect" I have rechecked the key twice and it is correct (actually it cannot be wrong because they file was copied from a working system). I have also tried to connect to a WEP encrypted network using iwconfig without success. I get no error when connecting but iwconfig tells me "Access Point: Not-Associated".Because of the "Device or resource busy" I tried a "lsof | grep -i wlan" but there are no results.

if the NetworkManager uses wpa_supplicant? I normally dont use NetworkManager and decided to try it. I started it and tried it out and it works with WEP and WPA! I cant figure out why using the iwconfig command is not working by itself for WEP. WPA working with NetworkManager is just a bonus though.

When I run wpa_gui I get a "Failed to open control connection to wpa_supplicant." message and an endless stream of "PING failed - trying to reconnect". I'm sure wpa_supplicant service is running, it also seems to be working correctly (program logs show activity when I connect to a wpa secured network via gnome network manager).
The location that ctrl_interface (in /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf) points to (/var/run/wpa_supplicant) is an empty folder. I'm able to connect to a simple WPA network at home, but the one at my university needs special configuration and I couldn't get it to work by editing the .conf file. That's why I need the gui. My network card is Atheros Communications Inc. AR928X Wireless Network Adapter, the driver is ath9k.

First- clean installation of Ubuntu 10.04, with default network manager installed, I had a taskbar icon, and it could see the available wireless networks, could not connect to them, even the ones with no security. Purged all network manager files suggested in various threads here, Installed wicd- it could see all available networks, could connect to unsecured networks, but not to my own secured network. Password was correct in the wicd/configurations file. Removed wicd, and reinstalled network manager from synaptic. I have to network manager applet. When I try to add it to the notification area with alt-f2, applet-nm, I get a brief flash of something in the notification area, but no applet.
System=>Preferences=>network connections shows no wireless connections, but I'm obviously connected to something (probably my neighbors unsecured network) since I"m reaching this webpage. I tried to run sudo wpa_cli from the terminal to see what network the computer is connected to, and it gives me this error:
Quote:
Could not connect to wpa_supplicant - re-trying

EDIT 6 Dec: More detailed log from wpa_supplicant I'm using Ubuntu Studio 10.10 x64. I want to get wireless networking going manually. My wireless networking works successfully in Windows 7 x64. I can get it working successfully without encryption but when I try and use WPA-PSK, wpa_supplicant gets stuck in a loop between GROUP_HANDSHAKE and COMPLETED, as shown in the log below.
I've been working mostly off the instructions in this post: [URL]... My laptop is a Dell Studio 1537. It has an Intel Wifi 5100. The other generic information is
Code:

I am not so experienced with networking in Linux. I've successfully installed Red Hat Linux Enterprise 5.2 on a VMware host. When I issued nslookup command, it returns "connection timed out" error as follows:
Code:
[root@rac1 ~]# time nslookup rac1
;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached
real 0m15.038s
user 0m0.000s
sys 0m0.000s
My questions are:
(1) Is that error normal?
(2) Is there a way to decrease the 15.038s value? rac1 is the local hostname, so why it takes all that time to resolve it.
Following info may help:
Code:
[root@rac1 ~]# hostname
rac1.mydomain.com
[root@rac1 ~]# cat /etc/hosts
# Do not remove the following line, or various programs
# that require network functionality will fail.

I did a clean install of the latest version of Ubuntu. For some reason, there are still internet-issues. When I tried out the following command
Code:
telnet
open ftp.microsoft.com 21
I got
Code:
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection timed out
Also, during install of the new ubuntu, it was unable to reach the repos for downloading. Odd thing is that I can go online, and that when I type 'ftp.microsoft.com' in my browser, it displays the file-hierarchy.

I have a "bad password" reply using wicd 1.7.0 with WPA and a preshared key within Ubuntu 10.10, i.e., I am unable to make automatic/repeatable wireless connections using wicd without a workaround.
I believe this may be a problem interaction between wicd and the way wpa_supllicant is passing the (preshared) key to the network authority (the router). In my case, I use a Linksys WRT54GL running DD-WRT v24-sp2 (10/10/09) std - build 13064 OpenSource firmware, configured as an Access Point in Mixed mode (b/g).
I have no problem authenticating WPA Personal TKIP or AES from Windows or Mac OS X clients with a variety of wireless adapters (Linksys, D-Link, Lucent, Airport (Mac)) (No intervention is required to produce the secure connections).
With wicd 1.7.0 and wpasupplicant 0.6.10-2 (wext as wpa_supplicant driver selected in wicd by default) on Linux 2.6.35.-24-generic (Ubuntu "Maverick Meerkat") and a Lucent Orinoco Gold 802.11b wireless adapter I am able to connect to the network initialy (one time) without the "bad password" error.
After the initial successful connection, reconnection is not possible (the "bad password" error) ***unless the wireless security settings on the router are re-applied. Once reapplied/resaved, a subsequent attempt to create a wireless connection from the Linux client will succeed without any changes having been made on the client side.
The psk data being sent to the router (with respect to the Wireless security settings) is being cached in such a way the connection is initially possible but defeats subsequent attempts at connection. Perhaps the passkey is cached/stored on the client side (after it is used to make the first connection) in such a way that it will be sent incorrectly upon subequent attempts at connection? Of course, I'm simply guessing, here ... it is by luck that I found the workaround to establish this wireless connection.
**********
BTW, FYI, I was unable to use the Gnome Network-Manager to establish any wireless connections at all. Thus, Network-Manager was uninstalled (sudo apt-get purge network-manager) during the installation of wicd (Ubuntu Software centre). wpa_supplicant was re-installed (Synaptic) after wicd was installed.

Issue with the 'host' command that comes with bind-utils package.We don't have any browsing/name resolution issues except to the following two sites:
[code]....
command [URL] returned:
www.aeroplan.com is an alias for www.halb.aeroplan.com.
www.halb.aeroplan.com has address 207.34.195.17
;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached
;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached
[code].....
I have tried to run the "host" command against different DNS caching servers I have access to all produced the same timed out error. I called Aeroplan technical support to report the issue to them and from their perspective, they have no problem accessing the website.And we don't have any problem accessing any websites ourselves if "host" return A record lookup without the timed out error.
1. It's not our firewall filtering out packet. I tried it on external facing server without firewall and got the same result.
2. It's not our DNS caching server cause same errors are observed on our ISP caching server.
3. It works on an altogether network, from a Windows Vista desktop, through IE 8.

I apologize if there's a solution to this somewhere on the forum, but I searched around on google for several hours before posting this, so I assure you, I'm not trying to waste your time.Here's the deal. I have a file/print server running wpa_supplicant on interface wlan0 via ndiswrapper. Its wireless because the location I need the printer in is really inconvenient to have to run wires to, or I wouldn't have this problem.The box is running ubuntu server 10.10, with only ndiswrapper and the associated utils and wpa_supplicant installed in addition to the default packages required for file/print/web serving. (there may be a few trivial packages like Vim that should have no effect whatsoever.)Basically, wpa_supplicant associates fine with the AP, but I can't get any elegant way of getting a IP address with it, DHCP or static makes no difference. My current fix is my rc.local file has:
Code:
sleep 60
dhclient wlan0

Debian doesn't seem to handle the association between wpa_supplicant.conf records, and /etc/network/interfaces. This is in wpa_supplicant.conf:
Code:
network={
ssid="MYSSID"
key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
psk="stuff"
[code]....
What's happening is there are two gray circles as the wifi attempts to connect. The first one turns green, but it never completes the next step. The syslog shows that it's waiting for the (nonexistent) DHCP server to respond. If I turn on DHCP, the connection completes, but the routing is messed up (because at that point it actually tries to use the static IP from /etc/network/interfaces). So it seems to associate eventually, but it's way too late. I need it to associate soon enough to know not to attempt DHCPDISCOVER.

I'm working on a RHEL 6 base image for virtualization and I'm trying to pare down the things that we don't need. Considering none of the virtual servers will have wireless networking, I figured it'd be good to kill that wpa_supplicant process. even with the wpa_supplicant service off, NetworkManager seems to start it right back up. There isn't any wireless devices configured, so I don't know why it does this. I can't even kill the process, it starts back up immediately. Is there something in either the Network Manager or wpa_supplicant config files that would disable it permanently?
