Sep 5, 2010Just installed Ubuntu Studio 10.04 and everything seems to be working nicely except I have no networking.
The card does not appear in the Network Settings GUI. The only 3 tabs I have are General, DNS, and Hosts.

I'm a long time Windows user trying out some of the best Linux creative apps I can find. So, Ubuntu Studio was a no brainer. I checked the manufacturer's site for linux drivers and they are available, but I don't know how current. (Edimax site, not RaLink's site.) I opened the file and it looks like it needs to be compiled and installed to work. Something I know almost nothing about. The card is listed as supported in this forum for Ubuntu 9x but I can't find information about it for 10.04
PS. I have no networking on the system but I can transfer files via USB flash drives if needed.

Slackware :: Can't Use Wireless In 13.1 - Chipset: Rt2860
May 13, 2010I can't use my wireless card in slack 13.1 (slack64-current). Looking at the dmesg output I saw that the firmware was missing, so I download it from ralink website.After this I was able to up it with ifconfig. I also was able to see my network with wicd, but after connection I can only transfer very few packets and network becomes unresponsive, no traffic.In slack64 13.0 this same card works fine. I don't even need to install a firmware. how I can make this work in slackware64-current?

Apr 26, 2010About a year ago I had a different computer with this same wireless card (edimax EW-7128g) and it was recognized immediately after I installed ubuntu 8.10. I found this hardware compatibility page, and it says it is compatible, at least on 9.04.
After reading this old guide I found:[URL].. I downloaded the latest driver, and followed the instructions (i had to refer to the readme too, some things were slightly different which I'm assuming is because it's the 2010 driver not the version referred to in that tutorial) up until:
(e) copy the rt61.ko driver file to the modules directory then load it

I don't see where rt61.ko is.I've got the information for my wireless connection edited into /etc/Wireless/RT61STA/ rt61sta.dat iwconfig shows pretty much default stuff, no mention of my wireless card or any type of connection, though the card does show up at the bottom of the lspci query. I added the wireless connection information into the "Network Connections" prompt in the preferences, but obviously that's not accomplished much of anything for obvious reasons. Should I just install 9.04? Judging from this account, getting this wireless card to work would be a hell of a lot easier.

Sep 13, 2010I'm having trouble installing my RaLink RT2561/RT61 wireless card. It seems that this driver causes problems for all ubuntu users, and I've tried a couple of work arounds, none of which work for me.

CentOS 5 Networking :: Rt61 PCI Wireless: Freeze Upon Shutdown With Static IP Configuration
Jun 24, 2009I have one desktop PC I'd like to use as a jukebox. It's installed in the basement as a black box, with only SSH access, and it has got a minimal CentOS 5.3 install with MPD and NCMPC. It's connected to the hi-fi in the basement, so I can stream music to it when I'm downstairs. Since I didn't want to use cables everywhere, I bought a PCI wireless card, with a RT2561 chip.
Until recently this card worked OK with Linux. Recent kernel version even have out-of-the-box support for it, except of course you still have to download the firmware from the Ralinktech website.
I gave the thing a static IP configuration by editing /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-wlan0, interface went up fine, I can ping the machine and SSH into it OK. Now the only problem is, when I do a shutdown -h now, the machine "hangs" while trying to bring wlan0 down. (In case you wonder: I temporarily attached a monitor to it, since wanting to know what goes on while shutting down in an SSH session is a chicken-and-egg situation :)). I actually have to hard-reboot it (by pressing RESET).

Jul 26, 2011I've got a Laptop with Intel video chipset. I've got a full slackware 13.37 installation and I'm using the huge-smp kernel all though it's not recommended. But I don't think the issue is kernel related. The problem is that it detects that there is a monitor connected to the s-video connector, but there is no picture on the screen. It doesn't matter what mode I use, but ideally I want cloning.
What happens when I use KDE and krandertray (or system-configuration for that matter) is that I can choose resolution and everything but no picture shows up on the TV. When I press the "Identify monitor" (Or something) button both the "1 TV1" and "2 LVDS1" shows up on the same monitor (laptop). That is weird.
Has anyone experienced anything similar or could point me in some direction as to what could be done?(I haven't had the chance to test modifications to xorg.conf quite yet, but I guess that should work. However, I think it's worth it to get rid of this bug)
Slackware :: OpenSUSE Can Get Chipset Working With 64 Bit OSs?
Aug 13, 2010I've been using an Asus motherboard with the Marvell 88E8001 Gigabit LAN chipset for a couple of years now. It works great with any 32 bit OS, but has always failed when a 64 bit OS is installed - even Win 7. I plan to switch up to 64 bit Slack, and I need to use an ancient 3COM PCI card to get 64 bit connectivity.
I recently tested many 64 bit Linux distros (Debian, Ubuntu, Mint, PCBSD, etc), and I found that none seem to work except Fedora 12 and OpenSUSE 13.1. They have somehow gotten the skge modules to work with this chipset. Even the "driver" that Marvell recommends to use with this chipset fails (they say to use the sk98lin module).
Any ideas how OpenSUSE can get this chipset working with 64 bit OSs? I've thought about copying the skge.h and skge.c files from OpenSUSE's kernel source and replacing the ones in the Slackware kernel source for recompiling, but I'm not sure if this would be a another waste of time.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Chipset Dead ?
Jun 21, 2010It looks like my laptop's wireless chipset (Broadcom) has/is dying. It won't work anymore on my Lucid install whereas it was working perfectly. The warrenty is long expired.
lspci brings up nothing about it anymore, it once did.
I booted my laptop into Win7 and it no longer finds it either. The manual slider switch on my HP Pavillion dv6000 is in the on position but the light is yellow.
It will very rarely work on Win7 now.
I can't afford a new laptop just now so it looks like I need an external wireless adaptor. I have (open busses) USB, cardbus/54, and a small firewire port. It does not pcmcia or other busses.
Any particular chipsets to look for or avoid?

Lots of people have accomplished this by using aircrack but some operating systems can't install aircrack (not to mention that the use of some software is illegal depending on where you live) so i want an alternative.
Hardware :: Wireless Chipset - Natively Supported ?
Jun 7, 2011I am getting ready to buy a wireless N adapter for my computer but I want to make sure its natively supported. I don't want to have to use ndiswrapper or manufacturer supplied drivers. I have been looking on newegg and I think I have narrowed it down to two choices. One has the Atheros AR9285 chipet and the other has the Realtek RTL8188RE chipset. I am fairly certain that the Atheros is natively supported since according to the newegg reviews it is. However the Realtek one is cheaper but I can't seem to find any information on whether or not its supported.

I've tried what this link says:I've tried to blacklist rt2800usb, rt2x00lib, rt2x00usb and rt2870sta and to load "/etc/modules/rt3070sta", but no luck in that, so I simply do not know what to do next. Perhaps I haven't blacklisted them the right way? I've typed in the commands and saved Gedit and closed it. Is that the right way?

Sep 14, 2011I have the above mentioned USB Wifi Dongle Bus 002 Device 003: ID 148f:3072 Ralink Technology, Corp. RT3072 Wireless Adapter It works extremely well using the KDE network manager but just will not connect using ifup traditional method through yast.
Initially it was using the RT2870 driver but this only gave wirelessg speeds (and still no ifup) but after blacklisting RT2780 and using RT5370sta driver draftn speed was achieved using KDE network manager however I still could not connect through ifup. The dongle scans and sees networks using ifup but will just not connect properly (NB security WPA2-AES).
Ubuntu Networking :: Intel Mobile Chipset 4 Series / 10.04 / HP DV6-1030us (Wireless Connection)?
May 3, 2010Noob to Ubuntu here and I cannot access my wireless connection. It is working fine right now (wired) but I am using the TV stand as my computer desk right now so... not very practical. I tried following the "howto post a wireless issue (ticket)" but there was too much information for me to be able to put on here.
I have my SSID and my WEP. I am on Verizon DSL (only provider in my area). I tried using the wireless setting in network connections and I tried using DSL. I assumed that SSID+Password=Yay the internet works! but apparently not.

OpenSUSE Network :: RaLink RT2561 / RT61 Working In LiveCD Not In Actual HDD Install
Aug 2, 2010I am and Ubuntu user, and recently became interested in KDE 4, since it obviously looks much more modern that GNOME. I tried Kubuntu, but didn't really like it that much, so I downloaded openSUSE 11.3 and installed it on an old 40 GB IDE hard drive, leaving my existing Windows/Ubuntu HD untouched. The only problem is the Wi-Fi doesn't work, although it did work on the liveCD. Issuing the command gives the Wi-Fi card as being a RaLink RT2561/RT61. Does anyone know how to fix this? I really hope I can get this fixed, as I've heard some great things about openSUSE KDE, and would love to make it my primary OS, completely dumping Ubuntu. I'm using the 64-bit CD.

Jun 25, 2011Wife's laptop has AR5001 Wireless Adapter laptop model is Toshiba Satellite A215
Problem : Wireless networking randomly loses connectivity and can not regain connectivity, the only apparent solution is a full power down , this is not even certain to work. The card works under Windows, she hates Windows. (I love her for this) I know it's not faulty hardware , because it will work for days on end under Windows without problems.
Things I've tried : madwifi drivers (any and all versions available) : These increase stability of the signal and seem to delay the inevitable however it still happens. When using these drivers the only option is to unload them modprobe -r then reboot then remove them again and re add them. It makes no sense why this works, and if I don't remove them prior to rebooting it will not work.
ATH5K drivers : These are pretty much junk, results are unpredictable at best, sometimes it will work perfectly for a few hours, sometimes it will not work at all. Nothing is repeatable, I can't seem to force whatever condition is causing this. rfkill does not show the wifi being blocked (hard or soft), unblocking it anyway does nothing, only way to make this work and it's iffy is to fully power down wait 5-10 minutes turn it back on and it MAY decide to work.
Firmware update : Updated the Toshiba BIOS to the latest version of the firmware 2.0 no joy here either. Same issue both sets of drivers.
Tried different distros and kernels : I've tried Mint 9, 10 ,11 ; Ubuntu 10.10, 10.04 , 9.10 and 11.04 (which is currently installed) , Fedora and OpenSUSE. All are giving the same problems. I have also tried a slew of different kernels no joy from any of them (I'm not at the computer with the issue now I will post exactly what kernel versions I've used when I have access to the machine).
Another useful bit of information, the hard switch to disable/enable wifi WILL disable it but turning it back on does absolutely nothing. The hotkey does nothing at all. The bios does not have an option to disable or enable the wireless card.
I will also post the typical lsmod , lspci , iwconfig all that good stuff when I get back to the computer in question. I'm probably just going to buy a PC card for it and give up on that one, but this is driving me insane and I would really like to see it resolved even if I do replace the hardware.
Slackware :: Enable Windows Wireless Drivers In Slackware 13.1 And How To Install XFCE
Aug 22, 2010I recently installed Slackware Linux 13.1 , and my Wireless is down. I've only installed 3 Linux disto's on my main laptop (Ubuntu 9.10 , 10.04 , and Crunchbang Linux 9.04 , just had Crunchbang), and they all had the same problem. In all three , I was able to enable Windows Wireless drivers and every thing worked. Now , I'm assuming I have to the same ting in Slackware? Sorry , but I have no idea what my wireless card is. But I know that my laptop is a Dell Insprion E1705. One last thing , I did ifconfig and that wlan0 is my Wi-Fi interface. I typed ifconfig wlan0 up to see if that was the problem. After I did that , I got and error message. Then I typed ifconfig wlan0 down to see if it was down and it made wlan0 down. I tried bringing it up again , but I got an error saying it couldn't find the device specified. Also , how do I install XFCE? I really don't like KDE for some reason and would like to install XFCE. I chose XFCE over GNOME (my favorite) because I want to try something new.

Nov 30, 2009I yesterday installed Slackware and I am quite impressed. I have been using Ubuntu for a year and decided to move on. My wireless worked fine in Ubuntu but it seems that it needs some configuration for Slackware.Note that my home network WiFi has no password or whatever. I still can't find any networks with my wireless even after the configuration. I fire up wpa_gui and it can't spot anything..
