I yesterday installed Slackware and I am quite impressed. I have been using Ubuntu for a year and decided to move on. My wireless worked fine in Ubuntu but it seems that it needs some configuration for Slackware.Note that my home network WiFi has no password or whatever. I still can't find any networks with my wireless even after the configuration. I fire up wpa_gui and it can't spot anything..
I'm trying to take my current windows7 (x64) setup and make it into a dual-boot setup with slackware 13.0 (x32) and am hitting a brickwall. I guess I would like to know if I can salvage the situation without formating my windows drive. I fully intend to, but I had hoped to not do it this month. I'd like to get dual boot going so I can master it and acquire all the files/drivers I'll want and then format and do it 100% right next time.
Currently I have windows setup on a 3x 500gb Raid0 onboard array which itself has been flawless. After I shrunk my current partition size to give me about 25gb of free space I proceeded to setup Linux, and I was unable to perform the cfdisk portion for partitioning the array for Linux.
I tried using cfdisk: /dev/hdx (a1-a3,b1-b3) /dev/sdx (a1-a3,b1-b3)
I even attempted to locate with: cat proc/partition and tried using cfdisk on every device it located. It always said it was either an unknown partition table and should I start at zero, or bad partition. I was of course too concerned over my windows setup (which has almost 1tb of stuff I have not backed up) to go any further into the unknown.
PS: I have used Slackware before, back at 8.1, 10, and even a very brief interlude at 12.0, this is my first attempt on this computer however with 13.0, it is currently running fine on my laptop and my PS3 (Laptop is even dual booting 7/Slack13. Albeit without raid)

I have tried to get my wireless network setup for 5 nights now, with the same results. Everything in my system automatically installs during the initial installation, except wireless, which I have run into in the past with older pc's. This install however (from 13.1 install dvd) seems to not cooperate properly with the rest of my computer. After installing wicd, I attempt to connect to the wireless network. Immediately after, wicd shows in the activity bar 'flushing dns' and syslog spews out two notifications at the lower right. That's it. From there it hangs and will not terminate cleanly. If I log out from there, I cannot get back into my x window system. Startx merely creates an Auth file and fails to load, saying that it's already active on 0. Then, if I run shutdown -r now, the system only goes as far as disconnecting remote drives and then hangs as well. I have to perform a hard boot at that point. The only thing that circumvents this, is to installpkg remove wicd. After wicd's removal, then I can shutdown -r now and reboot, reenter X and everything acts normal - until a wicd install. Any thoughts, suggestions, anything?
Please be aware, that I am not familiar with outputting data into a file like in the other posts I've seen here, so if you need the output, please include the commands necessary.
I'm on a Dell Latitude E6500, and I'm switching from Windows 7 to Slackware 13.1; I've never used linux before. I'm trying to set up wireless internet, and it doesn't seem like there's any standard way of doing it for my system. When I run the "lspci -v" command, I find this:
I have successfully setup wireless printing with apsfilter, it has written the correct printcap file and if I print with "lpr -P lp file" it works fine, BUT, when I print with just plain old "lpr file" it goes looking for my old printer. The old printer is NOT in the printcap, so where in the heck is lpr finding this old printer name???
I have rebooted (although this is never necessary in Linux) but that made no difference either. I'm stumped.
I followed [URL]..to set up my wireless network with WPA2 encryption. It works now and knemo says:Encryption: active. However, "iwconfig wlan0" says Encrytion key: off:
Code: wlan0 IEEE 802.11abgn ESSID:"blitz" Mode:Managed Frequency:2.472 GHz Access Point: 00:25:9C:DE:D3:7D Bit Rate=0 kb/s Tx-Power=15 dBm Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off Encryption key:off
[Code]...
So is there anything wrong with that "Encryption key: off" statement? I suspect that encryption key only applies to WEP, but not to WPA2 encryption, but I am not sure. So my question is, can I ignore that statement and assume that my encryption is fine?
Besides, where does knemo read the information about encryption from? As I mentioned, knemo detects that the encryption is active. Are there any other commands to make sure that my encryption is safe and well?
Can i setup both the hardwired network and wireless printer network options in slackware13.1 for Brother HL-2170W mono chrome laser with both wire& wireless network options? 3 Slackware13.1, 1 WinXP PCs, 1 mac and 1 windows7 Laptop. Roomie is buy and i am picking if this setup can be done. We have 2wire gateway Ethernet & wireless enabled
I'm currently installing Slackware 13.1 on my old Sony VAIO. It's got a wireless card sticking out the side of it, and I just want to make sure I set it all up correctly. I got to the screen where it's asking: static IP DHCP loopback And I'm not sure which one to pick.
All rc.inet1 an rc.wireless scripts work well if a wireless extension is on wlan(x). My notebook has Intel Pro 2100 wireless adapter (the ipw2100 module). By the system the card is marked as eth1. If you have a look at rc.inet1(.conf) you see that by default an eth1 has no wireless extensions. how to set up my network.
No, not Arnold S.I'm talking about the one from slackbuilds.org. It's not just another terminal emulator. It's got a cool feature of broadcasting the input to all (or selected windows). If it's a well known and used feature, than I'm sorry. I read about it a couple of days ago and soon it proved a big time-saver.
As all my systems are almost identical (selection of software, /home/ directory structure, program configuration, etc) I used terminator to set up my new shiny Slackware64 13.1 systems. The 'broadcast' function of terminator mirrors your input to other terminator windows (ssh sessions to other machines). That way I didn't have to configure it three times on three computers. I know that one can write a script to automate most of things, but sometimes there are interactive steps which would not work in a script. It was especially useful in:
1. using sbopkg (3 simultaneous instances doing exactly the same thing on different systems ) 2. general configuration 3. setting up bookmarks in emacs 4. Creating some scripts that aren't there by default (eg. /etc/rc.d/rc.local_shutdown)
I can imagine how useful it can be for administering a number of machines.
I recently installed Slackware Linux 13.1 , and my Wireless is down. I've only installed 3 Linux disto's on my main laptop (Ubuntu 9.10 , 10.04 , and Crunchbang Linux 9.04 , just had Crunchbang), and they all had the same problem. In all three , I was able to enable Windows Wireless drivers and every thing worked. Now , I'm assuming I have to the same ting in Slackware? Sorry , but I have no idea what my wireless card is. But I know that my laptop is a Dell Insprion E1705. One last thing , I did ifconfig and that wlan0 is my Wi-Fi interface. I typed ifconfig wlan0 up to see if that was the problem. After I did that , I got and error message. Then I typed ifconfig wlan0 down to see if it was down and it made wlan0 down. I tried bringing it up again , but I got an error saying it couldn't find the device specified. Also , how do I install XFCE? I really don't like KDE for some reason and would like to install XFCE. I chose XFCE over GNOME (my favorite) because I want to try something new.
I only see two options in KDE. System settings which shows nothing relating to printing and Office Org printer administration. In the latter Office org printer admin shows "generic printer"..My printer is HP 5P. and I choose the option 5P/MP.Then next step asks me to: enter a command line for the appropriate device. I don't know what the appropriate command is. Can anyone help I leave it empty and click next. It shows the 5P/MP is now listed along with generic. I make it default and send a print command resulting in "error while printing".
I do have trouble in configuring my wireless network, though i configured it as what Alien BOB say(http://alien.slackbook.org/dokuwiki/...ckware:network) and google some similar Threads. My latop is Asus F83vf, wireless card is Atheros AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter. The code when I run lspci command is code...
I would like to setup Fluxbox for a non-English, in this case German, environment. But I'd like to have the command line in terminal windows in English. With my attempts so far, either everything including command line error messages is in German, or nothing. Can anyone of you, please, provide a hint, what's the best way to solve this?
I've just installed a vpnagent on my Slackware 12.2. A script running the vpnagent daemon is /etc/rc.d/init.d/vpnagent_init. My network is started with rc.inet1. The queston is at which point during the startup to run "vpnagent_init" script. I thought to add a call to rc.locale.
This is very likely a silly question but .. where is the power management setup in KDE? I have set it up before in Slackware 13.1 but now that I'm running 13.37 I'd like to set it up again but can't seem to recall where to set it up.
I've got 13.1 x86_64 installed on /dev/sda2, and I would like to have 13.1 x86 installed on /dev/sdb2. How do I setup lilo.conf to handle this? While installing 13.1 x86 on /dev/sdb2 I skipped the LILO step, so what I currently have is a full 32 bit Slackware 13.1 install on /dev/sdb2, but no way to boot it.
I have been following Alien Bob's README_CRYPT.TXT on the install disk and playing around with LUKS and LVM as highlighted in the section Combining LUKS and LVM. I got this working following the examples in the readme however I now wish to add another volume to the volume group. I have got this working and extended the group with an encrypted volume so it's now bigger. I want the two included physical volumes in the volume group (which are both encrypted) to be opened on bootup.
As it is now I am prompted for a password for the first physical volume (the passwords are set to be the same) and that opens and boots the volume. It has a problem with the second PV I have added and doesn't open this. There are errors on boot up about this and pvdisplay give this:
Code: Couldn't find device with uuid 'JVirxL-lmqH-SUym-3lXG-MnXx-Qjk8-JZRha8'. Couldn't find device with uuid 'JVirxL-lmqH-SUym-3lXG-MnXx-Qjk8-JZRha8'. Couldn't find device with uuid 'JVirxL-lmqH-SUym-3lXG-MnXx-Qjk8-JZRha8'. --- Physical volume --- PV Name /dev/block/253:0
I just updated to Slackware 13.1 last night (clean installation). However, when it came to setting up LILO, I chose "no" to the UTF setup when I usually choose "yes." I think choosing no put the line below in LILO.conf:
Code:
append = "vt.default_utf8=0"
What's the LILO setting if one chooses "yes" instead of "no"?
I'm designing a multi-machined system that is supposed to resemble a failover redundant web&&databaseserver. I think I have the theory pretty well figured out (which means I'll run into a lot of unexpected problems )... but my concern is this:
I need some extra hardware, and I can buy three PII's for almost no money, or a couple of PIII's that cost apiece what the PII's cost in total. Is there a good reason to choose one over the other? One day in the distant future the setup will go live on x64 hardware. So I'm hoping to transport as much of the configuration of the test setup to the new setup. Would that be a concern somehow?
EDIT: Maybe I should explain, it does not really have to perform in any sense, but prove workload gets evenly distributed between two (or more) machines and that it can handle it if the plug gets pulled from a machine.
I am trying to setup a cron job using crontab entry like this 6,16,26,36,46,56 * * * * /usr/bin/fetchmail -k>/dev/null 2>&1 But nothing is happening This is the first time I have attempted using cron as I have settup mutt for my email which is now working great but I would like to have the mail collected every 10 mins The file is saved as mailcron in my /home folder. When i run crontab -l its listed ok but no mail is appearing in mutt.
I created a dual monitor setup in Slack 13.37 using the KDE systemsettings -> Monitor Setup function. (Sadly I had to rebuild ~/.kde in the process, but that's a different story.)
I verify that ~/.kde/share/config/krandrrc contains the new monitor setup (both screens active). I have saved a startup session with krandrtray running. However, when I logon, the system always starts with both screens in clone mode. I always have to go into systemsettings or krandrtay and redo the dual monitor configuration.
Is there a better way? Do I have to create a suitable xorg.conf (which I will try when I get home) or is there another way to boot into the dual config automatically?
I download DVD ISO image of slackware 13.1. I check md5sum of the image. It is correct. I install the OS on my computer. During Setup, I can't create root's password. I try to input new password when prompt. And I retype the password for confirm. But the error show that "They don't match ; try again."
I just acquired a 1.5Tb Hdd which I am sticking in an old desktop to make a home net portal and server. I'd like to share files between the server and my various linux boxes, as well as my wife's XP and w7 laptops. For this I plan to use Samba. I'd also like to use the box as my media library, streaming video (using VLC?) I'm assuming if I can connect to the box over the home network I'll be able to read write and stream media files easily.
I'm also toying with the idea of installing Apache and hosting a website from the same box. I'd also like to be able to ssh in remotely, and allow for sending files via ftp. I've got the hardware set up, the drive is partitioned in to /, swap, and /home. I'm going in for a full Slackware 13.37 install, but from there I'm not sure exactly how to proceed.
