Slackware :: OpenSUSE Can Get Chipset Working With 64 Bit OSs?

Aug 13, 2010

I've been using an Asus motherboard with the Marvell 88E8001 Gigabit LAN chipset for a couple of years now. It works great with any 32 bit OS, but has always failed when a 64 bit OS is installed - even Win 7. I plan to switch up to 64 bit Slack, and I need to use an ancient 3COM PCI card to get 64 bit connectivity.

I recently tested many 64 bit Linux distros (Debian, Ubuntu, Mint, PCBSD, etc), and I found that none seem to work except Fedora 12 and OpenSUSE 13.1. They have somehow gotten the skge modules to work with this chipset. Even the "driver" that Marvell recommends to use with this chipset fails (they say to use the sk98lin module).

Any ideas how OpenSUSE can get this chipset working with 64 bit OSs? I've thought about copying the skge.h and skge.c files from OpenSUSE's kernel source and replacing the ones in the Slackware kernel source for recompiling, but I'm not sure if this would be a another waste of time.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Pulse And ICE1712 Chipset / M Audio 1010LT In OS 11.4 Not Working

Jul 7, 2011

Looks like Pulse is the cause of another problem with the ICE1721 chipset (when will this madness end!!). Anyways I have a pulseverbrose.log file that I'll pastebin here: Ubuntu Pastebin Also results of /usr/sbin/alsa-info.sh are here: Ubuntu Pastebin The symptoms are:

1. with Pulse I can play a guitar through inputs 1&2 and hear the output, but can not play any pgms like Banshee at all.

2. After "killall pulseaudio" I can then play Banshee but no external inputs, like a guitar.

The sys:

1. OpenSuse 11.4
2. 2.6.37.6-0.5-default Kernel
3. pulse-0.9.22
4. cat /proc/asound/version=Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.23
5. Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.23=alsa-1.0.24.1-4.7.1.i586, alsa-utils-1.0.24.2-3.1.i586, alsa-firmware-1.0.24.1-3.1.noarch

I'll update this post with more info as I get into it further..

Slackware :: Can't Use Wireless In 13.1 - Chipset: Rt2860

May 13, 2010

I can't use my wireless card in slack 13.1 (slack64-current). Looking at the dmesg output I saw that the firmware was missing, so I download it from ralink website. After this I was able to up it with ifconfig. I also was able to see my network with wicd, but after connection I can only transfer very few packets and network becomes unresponsive, no traffic. In slack64 13.0 this same card works fine. I don't even need to install a firmware. how I can make this work in slackware64-current?

Slackware :: Laptop And TV-out With Intel Chipset?

Jul 26, 2011

I've got a Laptop with Intel video chipset. I've got a full slackware 13.37 installation and I'm using the huge-smp kernel all though it's not recommended. But I don't think the issue is kernel related. The problem is that it detects that there is a monitor connected to the s-video connector, but there is no picture on the screen. It doesn't matter what mode I use, but ideally I want cloning.

What happens when I use KDE and krandertray (or system-configuration for that matter) is that I can choose resolution and everything but no picture shows up on the TV. When I press the "Identify monitor" (Or something) button both the "1 TV1" and "2 LVDS1" shows up on the same monitor (laptop). That is weird.

Has anyone experienced anything similar or could point me in some direction as to what could be done?(I haven't had the chance to test modifications to xorg.conf quite yet, but I guess that should work. However, I think it's worth it to get rid of this bug)

Fedora :: Graphics Chipset Stopped Working - Causes Kernel Crash ?

Jul 13, 2009

My graphics card (00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03))

used to work fine, but yesterday I opened glest and it crashed my computer within 5 seconds. No picture was ever displayed. I downloaded another 3D game called Nogravity (Glest being my only one, I wanted something else to test) and it crashed after a few minutes of play and I had to restart. After all the crashes kerneloops came up with a report.

Here is the most recent one:

Code:

I did recently notice that I have no direct 3D rendering, it comes up with something like: No (LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT SET)

I do not know whether I used to have it, but I do know that 3D apps used to run perfectly well. (In fact the stability of 3D apps was what converted me from Ubuntu where they crashed every 5 minutes)

I ran glxgears for 5 seconds and it gave me 420 FPS.

There is a thread [URL] concerning the same chipset on the forums, but it is quite old. I do not want to risk breaking my system while attempting the fix. It would be really helpful if you could help me on the same. Also, when I check the webcam through Cheese, I get images with alternating yellow-tinge and blue-tinge.

There is a pair of computers at the top right of my screen by the date/time. When I right click there the following are all checked:

Enable Networking

but when I click Connection Information Auto eth0 is the only connection that comes up (which must be the wired connection I'm using to submit this) Here are the things I've tried:

Ubuntu Networking :: Edimax EW-7128g Wireless PCI Not Working With Ralink RT2561/RT61 Chipset

Sep 5, 2010

Just installed Ubuntu Studio 10.04 and everything seems to be working nicely except I have no networking.

The card does not appear in the Network Settings GUI. The only 3 tabs I have are General, DNS, and Hosts.

A screen grab is attached.

I'm a long time Windows user trying out some of the best Linux creative apps I can find. So, Ubuntu Studio was a no brainer. I checked the manufacturer's site for linux drivers and they are available, but I don't know how current. (Edimax site, not RaLink's site.) I opened the file and it looks like it needs to be compiled and installed to work. Something I know almost nothing about. The card is listed as supported in this forum for Ubuntu 9x but I can't find information about it for 10.04

PS. I have no networking on the system but I can transfer files via USB flash drives if needed.

Some System info:

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Trident Cyberblade XPi Chipset Config?

Nov 19, 2009

I was having a discussion yesterday with a reviewer who appears not so familiar with SUSE. She was trying to install openSUSE on a 7-year old Toshiba laptop with the Trident Cyberblade XPi chipset. She found that after many struggles with initial installation, she was able to get a desktop, but it was small, and surrounded by "lots of black space".As a fix, she dropped in an xorg.conf file from a Vector Linux Light distro. Apparently it had some special settings based on bug-fixes Vector had contributed to "upstream code". I told her I thought this was a bad idea, but she insisted she was right and that xorg.conf files are "distro agnostic". Not unexpectedly, she experienced numerous crashes and lockups while trying to run KDE applications and abiword on this machine. Two questions -

1. Has anyone got experience with how to configure this chipset? She claims that it is no longer supported on Linux by the manufacturer, is "VESA-noncompliant", and is not supported in "upstream X code".

2. She claims she did not ask for help from the openSUSE forum because "it would take too long". I think her bigger problems were choice of unsupported hardware and choice of configuration rather than response time, but I wanted to throw this out to see if anyone had suggestions?

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.3 64bit Install Freezes After Reboot During Autoconfiguration - GeForce 9300 Chipset (MCP7A)

Sep 15, 2010

I just wanted to install openSUSE 11.3 64bit. Installation works fine until reboot request. It switches to console, saying that it tries to load without reboot, screen becomes black, i got a cursor with animated wait-symbol and then it freezes. Can't move the mouse, no reaction on keyboard inputs, HDD-led not blinking. If I reset my PC and boot the new installation, it says that an error occurred and asks me to complete the unfinished installation. It starts auto-configuration and freezes again at about 3%. I tried again and some time it did not start the graphical yast but in textmode. The freeze came at the same position, but it posted many lines on console with error messages. I could not scroll, so I saw only parts of it, saying kernel panic and many addresses.

I guessed that it has to do with my chipset and graphics card, it is a nVidia GeForce 9300 chipset (MCP7A) with onboard graphics. It works fine with openSUSE 11.2 64bit by the way, but it was not supported in earlier versions than 11.2. So I tried to install it with proprietary drivers. I started the installation again and added the nVidia repository and a Packman repo and selected the driver which works fine on 11.2. Error was same as above. Next I tried an openSUSE 11.3 32bit Live CD that came with some PC magazine and lay around and it is booting and works fine!

This was confusing to me, so I wanted to try the 64bit version of the live CD. Which was again not booting. It freezes at some part, maybe when it tries to start X. But it also freezes booting with 'nomodeset' (found it somewhere here), in VESA mode and even in textmode! So i guess it's not X what causes the freeze. But it is sometime at the end of booting up, as far as I can say. I would like to use the 64bit version but I don't know where to search for the problem. I checked every checksum before burning, so a broken media should not be the reason

OpenSUSE Wireless :: Intel PRO 2100 Not Working - RF Killswitch Button Not Working At All?

I followed the sticky about setting up wireless and I have come to an issue where the WLAN switch which is on this computer can be pressed, the light comes on, but no WLAN. When I looked in dmesg, this is what I get:

ipw2100: Detected Intel PRO/Wireless 2100 Network Connection
firmware: requesting ipw2100-1.3.fw
eth0: Radio is disabled by RF switch.

When running iwconfig wlan0 heres what I get:

home/j-dub # iwconfig eth0
wlan0 unassociated ESSID off/any Nickname:"ipw2100"

[code]....

Notice it says that the 'Radio is disabled by switch' in dmesg. I can press that switch until the end of the world comes and it does absolutely nothing but make the WLAN light put on a light show. And it shows the wlan to be unassociated with any clients. So, what are my options to get this Wireless up and working?
