Slackware :: Getting A Wireless Adapter To Work In 13.1
Oct 11, 2010So I recently installed Slackware 13.1 and now want to get my D-Link DWA-140 to work with it. However I'm quite an amateur at Linux and can't seem to figure out how to. After following many different how-tos and tutorials this is where I am: I got 2010_0709_RT2870_Linux_STA_v2.4.0.1 (supposedly USB driver)package and rt2870.bin (supposedly firmware) in my root catalog. What I have already done with them:
make & make install in 2010_0709~
blacklisting modules 2x00usb, 2x00lib, 2800usb
modprobe rt2870sta
copying rt2870.bin to /lib/firmware
Regardless of everything, my adapter still is not active.. and how can I make the OS load the module at startup?
Slackware :: How To Get WICD To Work With Wireless
Mar 10, 2010My area does not have broadband, but I am able to get 3G on my cell phone. So, I've been tethering it to my laptop when needed, but what I'd like to do is set up my Slackware 13.0 box (which is configured to run as firewall/router/dhcp server so that I can just turn on my phone's wireless router program, and then share it out over the whole network in my house. I'm using a Gigabyte b/g wireless card, which has the RT61 chipset in it. I have NO problems at all getting the wireless card to work with just setting up rc.inet1.conf. The only problem here is when I need to take my cell phone with me, I will not be able to simply turn it back into a WAP, and have my Slackware box auto reconnect to it.
This is why I started looking into using WICD. I do NOT run X, so that's why WICD fits the bill, since it has a cli version. First I tried installing the version that came on the CD. No dice there. I removed that package, and tried the 1.7 package that's on the mirrors under current. I used slackpkg to install it. WICD will run, see wlan0, sees my WAP and a few others, but it fails to connect. It attempts to up the interface, and use dhcp to get an ip, but it fails everytime. My phone's WAP program only does WEP, but I can't get WICD to get an IP with our without WEP enabled. I made sure that my rc.inet1.conf file does not reference any interfaces.

Nov 1, 2010I have a Slackware 13.1 install on a Desktop PC with wireless keyboard and mouse. When I log in it takes a very long time(5 minutes or so) before the keyboard starts working, and f.ex. it's possible to do Alt-F2. The mouse also works slowly in this period, but it is working.
I'm running KDE 4.5.2 on Slackware current, but did have the same problems with the fresh install and KDE4.5.1. When the lag period is over everything is working as normal. I have turned of strigi indexing and could not find anything special when running "ps ax" or "top".

Apr 28, 2011I'm using a hp dualprocessor athlon 11 g42-415dx notebook pc and my wireless wont work i put the passcode in wicd program and it says bad password. So i tried the pin code on the wireless router and that didnt work so am i doing something wrong or is there something wrong with the hardware? i got the wired connection to work but cant get wireless its a little more complex.

Jul 18, 2010I'm trying to install slackware 32 bit 13.1.After loading kernel it asks for keyboard configuration, but keyboard (usb wireless) doesn't work.
Keyboard works on the old 13.0 installation, on bios and also in the boot options of 13.1 installation cd.
I've tried removing legacy usb support and changing usb2.0 speed from high to full. Nothing changed.
Anybody with this strange problem? (kernel of setup seems also to detect it correctly as a trust keyboard).
Slackware :: Enable Windows Wireless Drivers In Slackware 13.1 And How To Install XFCE
Aug 22, 2010I recently installed Slackware Linux 13.1 , and my Wireless is down. I've only installed 3 Linux disto's on my main laptop (Ubuntu 9.10 , 10.04 , and Crunchbang Linux 9.04 , just had Crunchbang), and they all had the same problem. In all three , I was able to enable Windows Wireless drivers and every thing worked. Now , I'm assuming I have to the same ting in Slackware? Sorry , but I have no idea what my wireless card is. But I know that my laptop is a Dell Insprion E1705. One last thing , I did ifconfig and that wlan0 is my Wi-Fi interface. I typed ifconfig wlan0 up to see if that was the problem. After I did that , I got and error message. Then I typed ifconfig wlan0 down to see if it was down and it made wlan0 down. I tried bringing it up again , but I got an error saying it couldn't find the device specified. Also , how do I install XFCE? I really don't like KDE for some reason and would like to install XFCE. I chose XFCE over GNOME (my favorite) because I want to try something new.

Jan 12, 2010I recently ordered the Alienware Aurora from Dell and upgraded the video card to the Nvidia GeForce GTX 295 as I noticed that Nvidia offers a 32-bit driver for download.
Then I noticed that the system comes with Windows 7 64-bit so I am assuming that this is a 64-bit system.
My bottom line question is will I have to install Slackware 13 (64 bit) or will I have to stick with the 32-bit version since the Nvidia driver is compiled for 32-bit? This is a gaming machine so obviously I want to be able to realize the full potential of the video card.
If I have a choice, what are the pros and cons? I DO NOT want Windows so I'll be disappointed if I can't install Linux!

1. Why does wireless almost never work right on Ubuntu?
2. Why, when Ubuntu just decides to turn off my wireless card, can I not just turn it back on?
3. Why do tar balls almost never unpack right?
4. Why are printer drivers so buggy?
5. Why do my MP3 players and digital cameras not work with Ubuntu?
I spent 3 hours last night trying to unpack a tar.bz2 file so I can run my Ralink network card. It worked fine until my son unplugged my computer. Now my card is disconnected and it will not reconnect. When I check forums no one has a simple answer for something as simple as turning a network card back on. On my Apple, it's simple: click my wireless icon and hit "on." tell me an easy way to just turn my wireless card back on, it would renew my faith a little in Linux.

Network Manager doesn't display any wireless networks in SUSE while Win 7 can see 4 of them on the same machine. Ubuntu has no problem either

I'm running Slackware 13.1 and it's a full, fresh install.I get to show up with lspci -v:Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 5300 AGN [Shiloh] Network Connection...But it will not show up with 'ifconfig' which will only list the local loopback (yes we have have a eth problem as well but one thing at a time).

May 11, 2010I've just upgraded from openSUSE 11.2 to 11.3. In 11.2 everything worked fine: I've booted my laptop, logged in and turn my wireless card on using the hardware wireless button, the KDE Wallet opened up, I inserted the password and voil�, wireless connection was on.But after upgrading from 11.3, it doesn't work like that anymore. I need to have the hardware wireless button pressed to on during boot, otherwise Network Manager will not work. And yes, I do check the "Enabled wireless" option, but it doesn't work. When I tried to check it out, I found out that the wireless "Scan" button that scans and displays the available wireless connections shows nothing.So, if I forget to put the wireless on for boot, I must restart and put it on. I've tried log off and log on, and restarting some network services, but neither worked.I have an Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 2200BG, as showed below, and I'm posting this message using it.

Jun 22, 2010Suse on an (old even) laptop is even more fun that it is on a desktop. BUT, I still cant get my wireless to work! I have the Encore ENUWI-N3 USB adaptor. Suse sucessfully detects my USB device, recognize its a Wireless lan network adapter, installs it as such (gives it its driver) and adds my wireless menu under network manager. (it gives it the rt2x00) I can enable / disable the USB device from there (its light corroborates that.
So all in all, suse installs my wireless. But I CANNOT find any AP when I scan. Under the "scan" tool (under connec to wireless > A wireless network ect ect) I find no APs. Adding the SSID of the AP manually is of no help either. And the command sudo /usr/sbin/iwlist scan merely gives - "wlan1 Scan completed" and nothing else. Check ifconfig - not a frame sent/received.
Slackware :: New To Slackware / Wireless Setup
Nov 30, 2009I yesterday installed Slackware and I am quite impressed. I have been using Ubuntu for a year and decided to move on. My wireless worked fine in Ubuntu but it seems that it needs some configuration for Slackware.Note that my home network WiFi has no password or whatever. I still can't find any networks with my wireless even after the configuration. I fire up wpa_gui and it can't spot anything..
