I have a Dell Inspirion 5150. The onboard sound card was blown 3 years ago. OS is Ubuntu 8.10. I am also a HAM radio operator and use the computer for digital modes using a USB device that acts as an external sound card modem for me.
The program that I use for that is fldigi. The device is Signalink USB by Tigertronics. the device has the ability to have speakers plugged in to it. Question: Is there a way to have the computer send the audio out the USB cable to the device?
I have looked at my sound settings and there are USB devices but none of them are the one(s) that I use with my Signalink device. If it can't be done, no worries -- have not really needed it so far. Just something nice to have.
For those that use Virtualbox on their slackware host and have a windows (xp) guest running. I have tried various settings for sound (Alsa, PulseAudio), the AC97 drivers are installed in the Windows xp guest os, but there is no sound and there is an unknown audio device (in the windows device manager). If I remove the AC97 drivers and use the soundblaster16 drivers in the Vbox settings there is no unknown sound device, but there's still no sound. why I can't get sound working?
When I run the audio configuration I get: The following audio device was detected: Vendor: nVidia Model Coporation GF100 High Definition Audio Controller Module snd-hda-intel but I do not hear sound.
The ALSA driver version is 1.0.14rc3 Lib package is: 1.0.17.-1.e15 Utils package is: 1.0.17-1.e15
The audio configuration sound test and the answer to the question No returns a message that says: automatic detection of sound card did not work. I am not sure what else is needed to diagnose the problem.
I've got no sound. I'm not sure if I should post this in the hardware forum or not because i'm not completely sure that it might be hard ware. Here's the card that's in my laptop though. Raedon HD 4200 - RS880 Audio Device. And yes I made sure my sound was off mute.
i am using ubuntu studio karmic and i have a digitech vx400 audio effects pedal which serves as an audio in/out midi in/out device via usb. i can sucessfully set it as the system sound device in system>preferences>sound for both input and output. but, when i play audio through it it only works for a few minutes before the sound stops completely. if i leave the system settings set to the internal sound card and configure jack audio connection kit to go to the usb device, i get the same results on the usb sound. a few minutes of playback at the most.i can restart sound with either "pulseaudio --kill && pulseaudio --start" or "alsactl init" in either situation. just requires restarting the programs. same results after restarting. i think this is alsa related as i have both the system sound and jack using the alsa driver, but i don't truly understand the relationship between pulseaudio and alsa.
I just installed Ubuntu 9.04 on my laptop then immediately upgraded to Karmic 9.10. Pulseaudio installed by default. There's no sound although the mute button is not checked and the volume slide control is at medium. lspci gives:

So, it appears that somehow the audio device controller in my laptop is not recognized or its driver disabled, possibly by pulseaudio. Sound works fine in Windows 7 part of this dual-booted laptop.
I have detected some problems when I try to record sound in my Kubuntu 10.04 system.
The problem is that the "default" device for audio recording does not work but I have to select another device to do so. I always selected the "default" device for audio recoding but currently I have to select hw:0,2 device.
Another odd thing is that different programs show me different device. For example, Audacity shows me that I have the following audio recording devices:
- HDA Intel: ALC888 Digital (hw:0,1) - HDA Intel: ALC888 Analog (hw:0,2) - spdif - default
The only one that works is hw:0,2.
But arecord shows me (when I execute "arecord -L") the following:
Finally, in KDE system preferences for audio I get that I have 2 different audio devices for audio recording:
- HDA Intel (ALC888 Analog): it is said that it will try first x-phonon (CARD=0, DEV=0) and, if the latter does not work, it will try plughw (CARD=0, DEV=0)
- HDA Intel (ALC888 Digital): it is said that it will try first x-phonon (CARD=0, DEV=1) and, if the latter does not work, it will try plughw (CARD=0, DEV=1)
Where is the hw:0,2? and how can I set the alsa system to use hw:0,2 as the default device for audio recording?
All of that would not be a problem but I also have an ubuntu 9.04 installed on a virtual machine (by using virtualbox) and audio recording doesn't work there. I suppose that it is becase of the virtual sound card is using default devices for playing and recording audio.
I must say that audio playback works fine in both host and guest systems. It is just audio recording.
I've dedicated most of today attempting to get some sound out of my Debian Lenny installation and I'm getting nowhere. I've tried a varity of potential solutions and still no peep from the machine. I'm using ALSA (and ran the 'alsaconf' utility with no errors and then used 'alsamixer' confirming that the volumne is set and not muted) for sound playback but nothing works?!? I've tried everything that I could find online and installed a variety of alsa related stuff, but at this stage my lack of experience (coming from a Windows background) is really beginning show. The only unexplored thing is that the device is not listed in the xorg.conf file, but there doesn't seem to be many mentions of this online and a possible red herring. I have behringer UCA202 usb card, after plug to usb, it just works , I have only small problem with alsamixer, which still shows by default my integrated HDA Intel, I could switch it by F6 or by alsamixer -c 1no problem, but I expect that default card is now plugged "USB audio", so why alsamixer recognize default audio device as HDA intel and not a USB Audio ?anyone who has two or more sound cards with the same issue ?

Seems very doubtful that inodes are the killer.I have googled and followed all the threads, and search these forums and found nothing that fits - every answer there was focused on avaiolable space and inodes..And to make the cheese even more binding, the issue has cropped up on another 8.3 system with far more disk space (larger hard drives) and lots more unused inodes

I've been testing Squeeze to determine whether KDE4 is finally suitable for my primary machine. Everything seems to be working fine except for detection of IDE devices. My CD/DVD drive no longer automounts and the reason seems to be that no device is being created. My Lenny system detects the drive as /dev/hda, but no such device exists in Squeeze. During boot, Squeeze appears to detect the drive as /dev/sr0 (according to dmesg), but in fact that device does not exist either.I'm actually running the Lenny kernel, as I am unable to compile my Ralink wireless driver (rt2860sta) using the Squeeze kernel. Also, for inquiring minds, I use removable HDD drive bays on my systems to simplify testing.
I run a program (findknxusb) to scan for devices on USB, but the device is not found.

I installed Debian Lenny on my HP Laptop - dv6-2120ed. Because i have atheros wireless card i needed to install ath9k which is not supported in 2.6.26 kernel so i compiled it to 2.6.32. Everything is good, but when i boot the new kernel i get "Bar 6: No parent found of for device" for 2 devices - the ethernet LAN card and the sound card. After 1 minute waiting the kernel starts booting and everything works fine (the LAN and the SOUND card too). How can i fix this and what means it exactly?
The computer networking works fine with a normal static setup, but adding a USB wireless device is not successful. It is my own network so the wpa-ssid and wpa-psk are known to work with Lenny and a previous wireless device.The device is recognized (lsusb) and the driver is confirmed to be in the kernel (lsmod). After typing: ifconfig wlan0 192.168.1.144 up I can ping that address, but it is not working. I have just done a fresh install of Sid so that I could get the 2.6.35 kernel which contains the ath9k_htc driver for the USB wireless device that I am using. The firmware is ar9271.fw but my source of that is questionable because it does not seem readily available. I am temporarily using a PCMCIA wired connection which is what I am using to connect to the computer via telnet. (This is just for convenience so as to avoid getting up all the time.) Is there any way in Debian to record streaming audio from the soundcard, after it has been decoded by a player or a browser?
Of course, the best way to record streaming audio is to grab the stream directly, but with emerging technologies, before the stream grabbers catch up, it can be difficult or impossible to directly grab a stream. The Akamai HDS format is a good example of this. The fragment packets are hard to grab individually and hard to combine. Something like [URL] .... didn't work for me.
Furthermore, as technology advances, stream grab techniques will have to play catchup.
But what normally works is capture from the soundcard, after the stream has been decoded by the player or browser. I have used Total Recorder [URL] .... on windows to do this for many years.
Is there a debian package that can capture sound from the soundcard, and save it as mp3 or ogg? And will this package run on the raspberry pi?
I'm having problems keeping audio working. Using Sparky with 3.16.0-4 kernel on a homebuilt PC. AMD A10-7850K CPU on a Gigabyte F2A88FN-WIFI mobo.
I'm using a set of Logitech Z-5 USB speakers and I repeatedly lose all audio output. To get it back I need to do 1 or all of these steps:
1) Unplug the speakers 2) Kill all processes that may be producing audio (Chrome beta, IceWeasel, Exaile, etc.) 3) Start Alsamixer and select another source in sound card list then reselect USB card #2. 4) The weird one - Remove and then re-add the volume applet that I like to have in the panel. When I lose sound th slider gets "stuck" and will not move. It will not recover.
I may need to repeat this several times but it will come back. Not immediately after any step but after a few attempts it just begins working as long as nothing is trying to produce audio at the moment. Sometimes Alsamixer says that my USB Card has no controls when I reselect it, not every time though.
Most of the time if I have more than 1 source open at any time it is likely to die again, for instance I like to stream Google Play Music. If I pause that but leave it open, then try to watch a Youtube video or other source I will either get no audio from either source, or lose the streaming audio source when I try to restart it. Going through the above routine 1 or more times usually restores it.

I was just using the mic and watched it stop working suddenly. I was in the middle of a skype test call when the graphical mixer level died down to zero in the middle of the call. When the test call was played back, the first part sounded fine then the sound got lower until it became inaudible. Since then I can't get any sound from my mic in skype.
Also, the audio input level graphically shown in Sound Preferences shows no fluctuations in sound as it used to before. The input device is enabled. I tried using Sound Recorder to record some sound clips and that worked fine. So the mic is working but Sound Preferences and Skype seem to have the mic level really low. I'm not sure what else to think considering it was working perfectly a few minutes ago. I've tried restarting, but that didn't fix it either.
I've been having a problem with Bluetooth on Debian 8 Jessie i just can't connect to any bluetooth device, i have only tested my smartphone and my bluetooth headphones, i am using blueman manager.After attempting to connect to my bluetooth headphones/smartphone it just disconnects and says "Connection Failed: No such file or directory",i don't know if i have to create a config file or something, the error message doesn't say anything but the error previously mentioned.
I have a problem activating the hotspot on my debian 8. The issue is that I can't activate the hotspot to give other devices wifi connection.
I have the correct driver packages from the non-free repositories (firmware-realtek) and this service (hotspot) worked fine on distros like Ubuntu, Mint and Fedora .
I tried hostapd but it didn't work. I'm using cinnamon desktop.
My os is debian 5.0, netcard is RTL8168D/8111D. I can't use the Static ip, if I setup static ip, output "not found network device", but the network driver have loaded and if I use DHCP mode everything is ok. do you understand my english? What my next steps should be?
I'm not sure if this is a bug in Squeeze beta 2 or if it's something I've overlooked. I have a Maxtor 250 GB external USB drive that I use for backups. It gets auto-mounted fine, always in the same place, and from my normal user account I can write to it, even delete directories on it if I want to. But when, from Gnome, I select the "Safely remove" option, I get an error to the effect that it can't stop the device. The weird thing is that the thing actually *is* unmounted. I've checked the mount point and it's no longer there.Is there some package I maybe should've installed but haven't? I'm not really worried about data loss, since I'm sure the drive wouldn't unmount unless it was properly synched; it's just the error message that bugs me.
I'm configuring a machine with Debian 6. I booted from the DVD, took the defaults, and it eventually came up with a Gnome desktop. Everything worked as expected.
I then installed gcc, g++, the Debian kernel source, and built a new kernel with preemptive multitasking turned on. It built clean, I ran "make install" and it put the kernel files in /boot. I rebooted and got a kernel panic error, to the effect that it couldn't find the root filesystem.

I've tried changing the grub entry to UUID, but the new kernel still panics. grub-mkconfig and update-grub just rebuild the split UUID=/sda1 grub.cfg. The new kernel still seems to be looking for /dev/sda1 even after changing grub.
I am trying to figure out what needs to be done to automatically set read/write permissions for everyone for my proprietary USB device on system boot. I have created a udev rules file which changes the permissions for the device when it is connected, but it does not change the permissions when the system is booted with the device already connected. The file looks like this:
Does something else need to be added to the rules file to make it work when the system boots with the device connected? Is there some other script which needs to be created somewhere?
I have a problem defining persistent device naming on a Debian Lenny server.I have:RAID1 controller on the server machine with two SCSI disks.external storage with RAID5. I have / mount on the first partition on the server SCSI disk and /storage mount on the external storage.
I'm experiencing a problem: The system recognizes the system disk (RAID 1), as sda or sdb - randomly.I want: To control the recognition, and tell the system that sda (sda1) will always be the system disk.The motivation: GRUB is configured to work with sda, and when the system disk doesn't, boot process fails, and I end up in the initramfs shell-like interface.

I have Debian Testing. I am testing XFCE and LXDE and i want to use display manager other than GDM. I have tried SLIM and XDM but when i use them i can't mount partitions and USB through Thunar, PcMan or Nautilus - i get message that i am not authorized (if i do groups in terminal - adm dialout fax cdrom floppy tape audio dip video plugdev games fuse powerdev netdev lpadmin scanner sambashare). When i install GDM everything works fine. I have installed FUSE, HAL, Udev,...I have tried a lot of stuff from AcchLinux forums but nothing worked really.
