Is it possible to access windows network printers from a VirtualBox WindowsXP client running under Ubuntu 10.10 host? The networking type is NAT. Would Bridged Networking solve the problem? If so, is there a tutorial on how to set up bridged networking for virutual box?
View 1 RepliesFor those that use Virtualbox on their slackware host and have a windows (xp) guest running. I have tried various settings for sound (Alsa, PulseAudio), the AC97 drivers are installed in the Windows xp guest os, but there is no sound and there is an unknown audio device (in the windows device manager). If I remove the AC97 drivers and use the soundblaster16 drivers in the Vbox settings there is no unknown sound device, but there's still no sound. why I can't get sound working?
View 13 Replies View RelatedI have WindowsXP installed under VirtualBox. Most of the time this works fine, but sometimes when I boot it up, it runs so incredibly slowly that it is unusable. My only solution to this has been to copy out the important data, restore the vdi file from backup and reboot. This usually solves the problem until next time. "top" shows that vbox is taking 35% of the memory (which is the amount I have allocated) and about 102% of my dual core's CPU. Everything else is running OK at the time.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've been using Kubuntu 9.10 for several months now. For most of that time, I configured and used with no problem several network printers.. a HP LaserJet 3015 at home connected to a Windows machine, and a Xerox Phaser 8560 at my coworking space connected directly to a router.
However, several weeks ago I was at the coworking space, requested a print from my web browser, and in the printer selection dialog, observed the list of printers expanding... some sort of autodetection of network printers was occuring, and multiple instances of the same printer were being offered, with slightly different names. Printing to these devices did not work.
Now, after a reboot, there are NO network printers available no matter what network I'm connected to. When I use the Kubuntu printer configuration tool and try to set up a new printer, it asks me to "Select a connection" to which the only option it gives me is "Other". When I put in an address for the printer it just cycles endlessly, never finding anything.
I have a machine acting as a gateway for a private network. While it can ping hosts on that private network, I can't use samba (smbclient or smbmount) to access shares on hosts on the private network from that machine. Other machines on the private network can access shares on other machines - just not the gateway server.
Here's how the gateway is configured:
When I try to connect to ports 139 or 445 (via smbclient or smbmount) the mount() system call times out. As I mentioned above, I can ping those hosts, so UDP packets work but TCP packets seem to get blocked or lost.
I have a redhat server with SAMBA file services. I have copied all the users files into their respective home directories and mapped a network drive to their folders. However, when I try to access a file in those folders the machine reboots itself. There are no error messages or anything, it just reboots!

My situation is this: I'm running Ubuntu x64 10.10 'Maverick'. I have a cablemodem connection for my Internet access. I have home network running on DD-WRT with the dreadful Linksys WRT54G series router.
My DD-WRT router is 192.168.1.1, subnet 255.255.255.0.
My Linux box is 192.168.1.61, subnet 255.255.255.0.
I have a VyprVPN connection set up successfully on Linux. Mostly everything works great, speed's fine, latency is what I expect it to be. Except... I also run an SSH server to remotely admin the box at port 22, an Apache server running over SSL at port 7001, and a Transmission web client at port 7002 (only secured by basic HTTP realms auth). All of these things worked before I got the VPN working, I'm of course using NAT at the DD-WRT router.
The endresult I am looking for, is to have the security and protection of the VPN (even if it's only perceived) for everything I do on this machine -- EXCEPT on Apache, the Transmission web panel, and the SSH server, which I want to access from the outside world. I have no firewalls running or configured, not even iptables, not even the SPI firewall on DD-WRT. All connections to the aforementioned services from the outside world timeout coming in to the Linux box. They all work from inside my home network (182.168.1.0/24). I'm trying to set my openSUSE desktop up to use the printers on my office network via Samba. I managed to get it working in 11.2 but 11.3 is giving me some trouble.I am able to access the printers and use them but I have to enter my network credentials each time I print. In 11.2 I was able to "save" my username/password and was not required to do this. Are there any Samba packages I need to add in addition to the basic ones? There seems to be a lack of documentation on this particular subject, most is concerning Windows clients printing on Linux print servers.
View 2 Replies View RelatedWe installed Fedora on top by my WindowsXP, we have updated the connection information with the addresses, but can't access any website. Connection Manager says we're connected. We created a new wired network connection, but it doesn't appear in the choices.
I installed Ubuntu recently and had a similar problem, only mine was that my computer was competing with hers (something to do with DHCP). The solution was to alter my /etc/network/interfaces file, but I also screwed with settings in the "Network Connections" thing, pretty much altering a connection my /etc/network/interfaces file seemed to have made. My problem was only solved as far as I cared. I wonder if this is the same problem.
On the other hand, we attempted connecting the Fedora box directly to a modem and still no internet, so I believe they are entirely unrelated. But I wanted to include this for completeness in case they are.
With VirtualBox you can share a directory on the host machine with the guest machine. Can you share a directory on the guest machine with the host machine? In my setup the host is Windows 7 and the guest is Ubuntu. Can I have a directory on the Ubuntu file system accesible from Windows?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm using the newest VB 3.18 Lucid AMD64 .deb downloaded from Sun. Previous versions have not had USB support in Lucid. Now, when I start the XP guest, all my USB devices seem to be detected. My USB phone is shown as 'busy' as is my mouse. However, both my printers remain greyed out and are shown as being 'unavailable'. I have tried manually adding the printer filters before starting the guest, but no dice. Is anyone else having this problem? Any ideas as to a possible cause?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm running Ubuntu 11.04 (guest) on Windows 7 (host) with the guest additions installed. I have an auto-mount folder that maps to my D: drive on the host which I can access using sudo ls /media/sf_D_DRIVE - however, even when my user (ross) is a member of the vboxsf group I get a permission denied error when attempting to explore it. I have restarted since adding my user to the vboxsf group.
This should work because I am a member of the group (which has rwx rights), so why doesn't it?

i was getting impatient in finding a way to make some of my peripherial devices to work in linux but no luck, so i installed windows xp home in virtual box, gave it access to my usb devices and installed the drivers for the printers and scanner. but there is just one thing that i want to do now how do i get windows xp to share my printer in virtual box with other computers in the house

One runs XP pro, one runs Windows 7 Ultimate x64, and one runs openSUSE 11.2.The two windows machines can share files between each other with no problems.On suse I setup samba correctly. When I go to Computer -> Network on suse, I then go into Samba Shares. Then I see my workgroup name. I click to go in and I can see all 3 of my PC's listed here.When I click on my XP pro machine,am prompted for a user name and password. I put it in and I gain access perfectly.
When I click on my Windows 7 machine, I am prompted for a user name and password. I enter it in and it prompts me again for the user name and password. It will not let me in.I have changed all of the settings in 7, I have disabled the firewall, I have changed the security policies, I have changed the encryption strength.Simply Samba is nolaying well with Windows 7. I cannot believe that I am the only one with this problem
I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 since 2-3 weeks. First I tried live CD and the OS seems to be very good. So i installed it on my laptop.So far i had no problems until I tried to access the shared network folders of my Server running on MS Windows Vista and another trial PC running WindowsXP. I'm trying to solve this since 2-3 days, I haven't found a solution.1st of all my network works fine. All computers can ping each other and as the laptop had Windows XP installed the server was accessable.1st I installed the SMB4k tool with this program. I could see the computer names, but as soon as I select a Windows computer the tool searches and nothing happens.
I tried a lot of different variations of this command but in the end I receive this kind of error. I also tried to add -o user=username pass=password, nothing changed.After this I searched information about this error, some forum threads I googled are telling the SMB4K tool modifies the /etc/sudoers file and cause this error. So i tried to change it back with some kind of sudo chmod 0640 etc/sudoers but this won't work it seems I can not modify or edit thisw file using sudo.With the pyNeighbourhood tool I could only see my Laptop but not the Windows PCs.At the end I will install Linux systems on all of my PCs, but only if all my tests will pass .
I'm running VirtualBox 3.2.6 on a Win7 computer. In VB I have several clients:
3 OpenSuse, 11.2 & 11.3, 2 w Gnome one text-only. One Smoothwall Two Debian Lenny, one w Kde one w Lxde Only in one Debian, the one w Kde, the numerical keypad doesn't work! I've tried booting without X but no difference.
If i boot to fedora and boot back to windows i can no longer can access network/internet on windows! It says the network is disconnected. The cable is connected properly and this message is happening only because i booted to fedora 12 previously before booting into windows.
I did not have this problem with fedora 10, 9. recently i did an upgrade to 12 and this is one of the problems among the many other i am facing. In order to get internet back on windows i have to shutdown the pc and wait for a while and power on again to get network back on windows. the same issues exists on windowsXP64 and vista32.

We are set up with network printers here (all Windows), and I was wondering how to go about being able to print to one of the network printers from my Linux desktop. Can I even connect to the Windows network with this desktop (it is hooked up)? Understand, I do NOT want to screw up anything on the network - they won't let me play anymore if I do. If I download the Linux driver, what do I do next?

I am running Virtualbox with Win XP on Ubuntu 10.04, Everything is mostly ok, but I find two problems. I cannot seem to find a way to access my second (physical) harddrive as well as DVD writer. I have tried to add it to shared folders in Virtual box, but no go. I can , however, access my USB drives ok, after I found out about the Vbox user permissions. But what I do notice is that it seems Ubuntu unmounts the USB drive as soon as Vbox "mounts" it. Is there no way to have these drives mounted simultaneously on both platforms ?

In terminal, if I try to ping any server with its name, like ping google.com, I am able to do that, even I can successfully used nslookup and several other network commands, but when I tried to download something, using "wget" or install something using "gem install" or checking out some code using "svn", I got server timeout error.
My goal is to install Windows 7 on a virtual machine running on Ubuntu. The Lenovo machine came with Windows 7 installed, but did not come with a boot disk. What are my options? Should I ask Lenovo for a disk? Will I need to purchase Windows just for the virtual machine?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have x11 forwarding enabled in /etc/ssh/sshd_config on a suse 11.2 32 bit box running kde I can open x apps on a windows machine using xming and putty just fine, but when I boot the same machine into suse 11.2 64 bit using kde and try using konsole I get: cannot connect to x server
The command I'm using to log in is: ssh -X -l username host I doubt the problem is with the server I'm logging into or it wouldn't work in windows, not really sure what to look for as I've never had a problem using x11 forwarding from a linux client before only windows ones
