Slackware :: Put Slackpkg On The Current Mirror - Reboot The System And KDM Don't Start
Mar 10, 2011
I put my slackpkg on the Current mirror, to install all the new sofware, including the new kernel... Now I tried to reboot the system and verify the speed of the all new packages, but KDM don't start! When I call KDM, it shines a little, show the mouse pointer and backs to term. When I call the XDM its a little different, it let me put my user and password, but after back to term too...

I recently upgraded my system from 13.0 to -current using slackpkg. However, I did not go through warnings on the web regarding the exact procedure to be followed (first running install-new and then upgrade-all). I just did a upgrade-all and then rebooted the system. And then the system would not boot and gives a libblkid.so.1 related error. Upon googling, I found suggestions as to booting from the install dvd 13.0, installing the old version of e2fsprogs and then reboot and doing the neccessary changes [URL]... Me being a linux newbie, don't know how exactly to do these things. Can anybody direct me with the list of commands/things to be done to solve this issue?

As per the subject line, the latest slackpkg doesn't honor the blacklist when using the clean-system option. It tries to make my multilib system unhappy.I fixed this by changing line 656 in /usr/libexec/slackpkg/core-functions.sh
Code:
checkblacklist
to

I use Alien Bob's mirror-slackware-current.sh with an excludes.txt to only download the parts of current that I want. Unfortunately it is not working for part of the exclude.txt file and I am at a loss to know why.
The excludes.txt is
Quote:
slackware64/e
slackware64/f
slackware64/kdei/kde-l10n-ar-4.5.5-noarch-3.txt
slackware64/kdei/kde-l10n-ar-4.5.5-noarch-3.txz
[code]...
This ignores e/ f/ y/ testing/ pasture/ source/ and usb-and-pxe-installers/ It also ignores most of kdei/ and /extra It is meant to ignore most of extra/source and just download the source for flash-player-plugin, but it is ignoring all of extra/source/, however the same syntax is working for kdei/ and extra/.

I want my system to email me when there is an update available via slackpkg. I decided to try a bash script to do the notification. So I started down this route:
VAR = $(slackpkg check-updates)
VAR1 = "No news is good news "
if [ "$VAR" = "$VAR1" ] then; . . .
I keep getting an error on the string comparison. I am guessing the variable types are different but I can't figure out how to fix it. Does anyone know how I can fix this script or accomplish the task at hand.

I attempted to upgrade a Slackware 13.0 fresh install to current. First I updated 13.0 by running:
Code:
slackpkg update
slackpkg upgrade-all
I then amended the mirror to current and ran the following commands
Code:
slackpkg update
slackpkg upgrade-all

First: I upgraded my slackware 13.0 last night (Philippine time) to -current. I just download the while current tree (except for source) and copied to my home dir, then do the slackpkg commands.
#1 Added a mirror to my home directory pointing the slackware-current tree.
#2 slackpkg update
#3 slackpkg install-new
#4 slackpkg upgrade-all
#5 slackpkg clean-system
#6 lilo was configured
#7 reboot
It successfully upgraded. Although I'm aware that I have installed openchrome driver and drm kernel module when it was slackware 13.0.
After a reboot, it crashes in between the boot time, if I was not mistaken, I read ACPI something on the bottom of the console, then the screen flickers and goes blank. It locks up there.
By the way, it is a laptop with VIA chipset on it.
(Using the Slackware 13.0 DVD, I booted using hugesmp.s root=/dev/sda3 rdinit= ro for the rescue.)
Trying to fix it by myself (no internet at home) I tried to look at /var/log/messages and cannot find what is the cause (newbie mode). I also tried to disable some services such as hald, httpd, mysqld, bluetooth, wicd, wireless, the old kernel and some others at /etc/rc.d/ by removing the execute bit.
After a restart, still the problem exists.
Now, I finally backup the whole home dir, moved to home-bak and decided to install the fresh slackware-current instead.
Second: I used the 13.0 installer, then setup slackware using the pre-mounted directory containing the slackware-current tree. I only deleted the files except for home-bak and not reformat the drive.
It actually installs, but after the reboot (using the new 2.6.32.3 kernel), still the problem persists.

After a fresh install of Slackware64-current could not get X to start correctly with the nouveau driver. When ever X started display was scrambled. Only kde would partially work with desktop effects enabled, but very slow. Without desktop effects enable kde was also scrambled. After trying several things and googling came up with the following. To get X to work created a nouveau-kms.conf file in /etc/modprobe.d with the following text.
Code: options nouveau noaccel=1 The one draw back to this solution is that Kde will not start with desktop effects enabled. Hopefully this will help someone else with similar problems. Maybe someone else has a better solution. video card: Nvidia Geforce 6150se nForce430

I switched today to slackware-current on one of my desktops to play with it and ran directly into a problem.
Since ages my lilo.conf has two entries for slackware. One for runlevel 3 and one for runlevel 4.
Code:
Since the upgrade this is no more possible because I get a kernel panic as soon as udevadm trigger is called. The stack says something about an unknown boot option. Because that i removed the append lines from my lilo.conf and i was able to boot the system. The crash happens when udev is called from within the ramdisk and afterwards. I tried both.
My question is now. Is this a bug in udev or expected? I have this setup since at least 5 years and had never problems with that. What do I have to do to be able to select the runlevel at boot time?

I was updating slackware-current via slackpkg and while it was downloading/installing latest kernel (and other apps) my battery went off and now the system can't boot. I was thinking to boot through a live cd and through chroot command to re-install all the new packages. Would it work?

I decided to upgrade from Slackware64 13.0 to 13.1 using slackpkg. I did a slackpkg install-new and afterwards, upgrade-all. My first problem was solved regarding libblkid. The second one, with DIALUPS_CHECK_ENB and NOLOGIN_STR was solved too. Now, when booting, the system says it can't find /sbin/mount, swapon, hwlock and fsck, and also /proc/filesystems and /proc/ioports. It asks for the root password for maintenance and boots again afterwards. Do you have any idea what should I look for, because the mentioned /sbin/_files _ are at /sbin ?

Today I moved my Slackware64-current installations to multilib. I blacklisted the gcc and glib packages in the blacklist-file for slackpkg. In the blacklistfile they say:
Code:
# Now we can blacklist using regular expressions.
# This one will blacklist all SBo packages:
#[0-9]+_SBo
I have blacklisted
Code:
...
# The gcc compiler suite:
gcc
gcc-g++
gcc-gfortran
gcc-gnat
gcc-java
gcc-objc
# The GNU libc libraries:
glibc
glibc-i18n
glibc-profile
glibc-solibs
glibc-zoneinfo
glibc-debug
...
How I can use the mentioned regular expressions in order to make blacklisting more efficient?

I'm going to rebuild a computer for a friend of mine. I'm going to install 12.2 in it and wanted to see if there was a way to install patches automatically from a cron. I don't think slackpkg can do such thing as a cron, correct? For anyone that set up a Slackware box for someone with little Linux knowledge, how did you handle the ability for the person to update the box?

if I've missed this in the doc's, but I don't see the ability to "wildcard" blacklist for packages to _not_ be changed out via the slackpkg program.More specifically, I tagged all my packages like this:
mozilla-firefox-3.6b4-i486-1_OLDFOGIE.tgz
note the "OLDFOGIE" in my package name? So can something such as:
Quote:
*OLDFOGIE*
be put into slackpkg blacklist file?

Like others here it seems I had problems with the latest -current. I can't startx, no sound, etc. I put back the video drivers and such from the 13 CD but now have a bunch of other issues, video will flash every now and then and sometimes go blank so I can only reboot as exiting xwindows and going back in its still blank. I tried booting from the 13 cd and reinstalling without formatting my root partition but that dies in the kde games for some reason and setup won't start again. I was trying to not format and loose all the updates just put back 13 but that doesn't seem to be working.

I am running Slackware-12.2 and try to keep my box up to date with slackpkg. The last few security update from seamonkey shows two files that need to be updated:
seamonkey-2.0.7-i486-1_slack12.2.tgz
seamonkey-solibs-2.0.7-i486-1_slack12.2.tgz
If I look what is installed, only one package:
# ls -la /var/log/packages/seamonkey*
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 68356 2010-09-28 22:33 /var/log/packages/seamonkey-2.0.8-i486-1_slack12.2
I looked back in all the slackware-security mails I have received and seamonkey-solibs seems to be added with seamonkey-2.0.4, for which the security mail was send on April-5. I don't see a recommendation to install seamonkey-solibs, and slackpkg will not update this packed, because it is not installed. I also had a look at the following page to find some clues: [URL]

Please, edit it using slackpkg.conf.new as example or overwrite it with slackpkg.conf.new. With recent changes to Slackware I would like to suggest that /etc/slackpkg/blacklist is modified as follows:
Quote:
# kernel-ide
kernel-modules
kernel-source
kernel-headers
kernel-firmware
kernel-generic
kernel-huge
This works better than the current entry.
